The Kedarnath Temple of Uttharakhand located in the Mount Himalayas, 3584m high from the sea level. It is one of the twleve Jyotir Lingas where Lord Shiva disguised into 'rump of a bull' to avoid meeting Pandavas after the battle of Kurushetra. Pandavas continued their search for Him; Lord Shiva dived into the ground leaving behind a hump on the Hill. This hump is worshipped as the idol of Kedarnath.
Kedarnath is one amongst the 'Pancha Kedar' and others are Lord Shiva's - Arms (Bahu) worshipped at Tungnath, Face - Mukh at Rudranath, Navel /Nabhi at Madmaheshwar, hair locks/Jata at Kapaleshwar. Samadi Mandir of Sri Adi Sankara Bhagavad Padal can be seen at this holy land of Kedarnath.

Kedarnath temple was built by the Pandavas. It remains closed for six months during the winter and the sacred idol of Lord Shiva is moved to Ukhi Math at Kedarkhand for daily worship.
Kedarnath does not have any railway station. The next nearest railway station is Haridwar Junction. Dheradun express from Chennai Central to Haridwar Junction takes nearly 41 hours and 30 minutes to reach and Chennai to Haridwar by Air takes nearly 4 hours. Haridwar is situated just 239 km away from Kedarnath.
There are two possible ways to reach Kedarnath. The first choice is to travel by foot, trekking through the sheer path ways for 14kms from Gaurikund, which is well connected by road from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dheradun and from the major hill stations of Uttharkhand. Gaurikund is 75 km from Rudra Prayag. In between Rudra Prayag and Kedarnath, there are holy temples: Agstyashram, Ukhi Math, Kali Math, Phauli - Palasat Devi Ma, Bamsu Vanasur, Ma Kali at Kalimath, Trijugi Narayan and Lord Kashi Vishwanath (This is the place where Goddess Parvathi married to Lord Shiva. The divine Havan Kund (The sacrificial fire) can be seen alive even now) at Gupt Kashi. The Second choice is to reach Kedarnath by Air from Gupt Kashi. There are Tours and Travel operators offers helicopter service from Rudra Prayag District.
