Ashta Varshadhiko Martyo Apurana Ashiti Vatsara:

Ekadashyam Upavaseth Pakshayor Upayor Api

( A person should fast on the bright and dark fortnight of Ekadashi from the age of Eight to Eighty)

Krishna Paksha and Eleventh Day of Margashirsh month is known as Utpanna Ekadashi / Utpathi Ekadashi. Lord Sriman Narayana is worshipped on this auspicious day and fasting on this day brings abundance of merits includes salvation.

'Ekadashi' means the eleventh Day and it falls twice in a month that is on eleventh day of bright and dark fortnight respectively.

There was a demon named Murasura lived in the Kingdom Chadravati.  He harassed the life of  sages and the deities. All the deities appealed to Lord Vishnu, they decided to fight against this demon. The war continued for several years, finally with the baffling power Lord Vishnu beheaded the demon Murasura.  It is believed that the mysterious power was provided by the Goddess - The mother of Ekadashi.  Thus, fasting on this day brings the merit of eradication of sins and salvation from the vicious cycles of Birth and Death.
