Amavasya on 5th December, 2010!! Varaha Puranam - The Importance of 'Sraddh' rituals !!

Varaha Puranam describes the Sraddha Rituals (last rites) and the significance of it.  Sage Markandeya while visiting the hermitage of Gaurmukh at Naimisharanya Kshetram , conversed the importance of the same to Gaurmukh.



This Puranam enlightens  Kamya Sraddha can be performed at the commencement of Utharayana or Dhakshinayana.  It can be done during Chathurmasya or at the time of Vyatipat Yoga or Vishnu Yoga or at the time of Lunar and Solar Eclipse.  This can be carried out at the time of 'Graha Dosha' or evil effects by the change in planetary positions,  frequent occurence  of Nightmares, or when the Sun changes its position. 


 
The stars Anuradha, Vishakha and Swathi fall during the time of Amavasya and is treated as the suitable day for performance of Sraddha and it brings satisfaction for the ancestors' souls for Eight Years.  Sraddha on a Amavasya Day of Punarvasu Nakshtra or Pushya gives peace to the souls of ancestors for Twelve Years.  The third day of bright half of hindu month of Vaishakh and the ninth day of bright half of Karthika (Karthik or Krithika), the thirteenth day of dark half of Bhadrapad and the Amavasya in the month of Makam are treated as appropriate days for performing Shraddha rituals.
