Dharmasthala - Dakshina Kannada !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Jai Shiv Shankar !!

Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala is  a renowned hindu religious shrine having 700 years of  history.  In this temple the presiding diety  Lord Shiva - Lord Manjunatheshwara  worshipped in the form of Linga and His Holiness Parama poojya, Padmashri Shree shree Dr. Veerendra Heggade is a present Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala.

Dharmasthala is  a sacred place, as the name suggests is a place of Truth, Faith, Communal harmony, Cultural Tolerance and spiritual experience in the Holy Land. Here, everyone enjoys the generous hospitality without any distinction of caste, creed or class whatsoever. Dharmasthala is situated on the banks of Rriver Nethravathi in Beltangady Taluk of Dakshina Kannada (South Canara) District.

This place was originally called "Kuduma". The lineages of the Dharmadhikaris are existing from the date back to 700 years. According to the legend, a Jain Heggade couple Birmanna heggade and his wife Ammu Ballathi (resided at Nelyaadi beedu) known for their devotion.   Four Dharmadevatas - Kalarahu, Kalarkai, Kumarswamy and Kanyakumari pleased at the devotion of Heggade couple, the Dharmadevatas appeared in their dream and promised to stay at Kuduma. As per the wish of the Dharmadevatas, Birmanna Heggade built temples for Kalarahu, Kalarkai, Kumarswamy and Kanyakumari and performed the rituals and ceremonies from time to time.

Sometime later, when Lord Annappa Swamy, the messenger of the Dharmadevatas brought Shiva-lingam from Kadri near Mangalore, Heggade built a temple of Manjunatha Swamy and sanctified the Kadri's Shiva Linga in this temple.  In 16th Century, Devaraja Heggade was invited Shri Vadiraja Swami of Udupi to visit this temple. Swamiji gladly received the honors but refused to accept biksha (food offering) because the idol of Lord Manjunatha had not been consecrated according to vedic rites. Shri Heggade requested Swamiji to re- sanctify the Shivalinga.  Swamiji was pleased at the devotion and dedication of  Heggade and his  performance of Vedic rites and kind heartedness, He named the place Dharmasthala as the Abode of religion and charity.

Our Temple Tour to Sri Kumarakottam - The Abode of Lord Muruga, Kanchipuram !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Muruga Saranam !! Vetrivel Muruganukk Ara Aro Ara !!

As we have reached early morning to this temple, in the outer praharam we could feel the utmost tranquillity.  The inner praharam was crowded with devotees of Lord Muruga.  Amongst them we could listen a voice of a saintly person singing  Thirupukazh melodiously.

Atraik iraithEdi aththath ...... thilumAsai
Patrith thaviyAdha patraip ...... peRuvEnO

Vetrik kadhirvElA veRpaith ...... thoLaiseelA

Sri Kumarakottam Temple dedicated to Lord Muruga is one of the oldest temples located in Kanchi.  Saint Kachiappa Sivachariar – a fervent devotee of Lord Muruga composed Kanda Puram and made publicly in the divine presence of Lord Skandha in this Temple.  On daily basis Sri Kachiappa Sivachariar inscribes his work about the glories of Lord Muruga and deposits them in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.  He continued this practice for quite sometimes.  On the other hand, each night Lord Muruga goes on verifying the manuscript prepared by Sri Kachiappa Sivachariar for any corrections or omission.  Thus, Kandha Puranam written by Kachiappa Sivachariar considered as an exemplary work approved by Lord Muruga.

Skandha Puranam describes a marvelous incident about Lord Brahma’s visit to Mount Kailash to meet Lord Shiva.  Lord Brahma met the two adorable children – Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga were playing on his way but he did not pay any attention to them.   Lord Muruga felt humiliated when Lord Brahma preceded his journey to Mount Kailash without paying attention to them.  Lord Muruga intervened and enquired Lord Brahma ‘Who are you?’ Lord Brahma proudly replied that He have profound knowledge in Veda, He is the Creator etc…Lord Muruga continued to ask many questions to Lord Brahma and each were answered pompously by Lord Brahma.   At one point, Lord Muruga interrupted Lord Brahma’s journey towards Mount Kailash and questioned Him the meaning of ‘Pranavam’.    Lord Brahma was not aware of the answer of the same.  Seeing Lord Brahma in a dilemma, Lord Muruga imprisoned Him.   Lord Shiva instructed His son to perform penance as a consensus for the above impish act.

Saint Arunagirinathar sung praising the glories of Lord Muruga starting with ‘Arivilla Pithar Undran….Kumarakottathu Amarndha Perumale’ in this temple.

Our Temple Tour to Kachapeshwarar Temple, Kanchi !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara !!

We visited Kachapeshwarar Temple in the morning around 7.30 AM; the temple and its surroundings were quite calm. As the temple priest was not in rush, we had wonderful opportunity to communicate with him.  In fact, he was more willing to share with us about the sthalapuranam from his limited knowledge.  He asked ‘Neengal Engirunthu Varel?’ (Where are you coming from?).  We said we are coming from Chennai.  He became more enthusiastic and continued that there are many temples in Chennai those are replica of temples of Kanchi.  There is a Kachapeshwarar Temple in Chennai, Geroge Town too. He added ‘Bhagavan, Nammal nalathai karuthi Nam pakkathilrunthu seva sadhikarar.’  (Lord always thinks about the wellbeing of His devotees. When you take one step towards Him, He will take 1000 steps towards you).

Presiding deity: Kachapeshwarar with His consort Soundrambikai

Worshipped by: Lord Brahma, Goddess Saraswathy, Lord Vishnu, Sage Shukracharya

Sannidhis: Chathurmukheshwarar, Lord Vinayaka worshipped by Lord Vishnu, Goddess Saraswathi, Lord Ayyappa and Kala Bairavar.  There are sannidhis of Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha Siddheshwara also can be seen.

Pushkarani: Ishta Siddhi Theertham

This is one of the oldest temples existing from the date back to Pallava dynasty. The presiding deity Lord Kachapeshwarar Lord Shiva in the form of Linga was also worshipped by Lord Vishnu as tortoise (Kachapa).  Thus, Lord Shiva assumed the name ‘Kachapeshwarar’ in this temple.

Vedarakshana Samithi, Ramanathapuram Village - Palakkad !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

We had been to Palakkad, Kerala – my homeland after a short stay in Chennai.   The pure and clean weather in Kerala was welcoming; in addition to it the slender drizzling invoked all the positive energies in us.   I told my Mom, ‘ Oh ! Ammu, it is fantastic and so beautiful’.  My mom said ‘ Mazhayila odathadi jaladosham varum’.  Who’s there to listen I got disappeared accompanied by my son who is equally adventurous like me.  My husband followed my Mom saying ‘ Neengal pathuvango, Avalellam odiyachu mazhainuttu.’ Kerala is such a beautiful place to spend holidays, especially    the rainy days are most enjoyable.  The climate was soothing and simply marvelous.

One evening watching at the cloudy sky and nothing much to do at home; we made a plan to go to a place called Ramanathapuram Village.  Honestly, I was not aware of this place before. I told Mom ‘Amma, are you coming with us to Ramanathapuram, Babu Vadhyar sollirukkar illaya? Nee varayo?’.  She said ‘  Neengal poittuvango.  Apprama nan varen.  I will be joining with you later’.  We remembered Sri. Ganapathirama Sarma alias Sri Babu Vadhyar of Rameshwaram (09486257540) and his instruction to visit Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya Veda Patasala in Ramanathapuram Village, Palakkad.  He explained about the Veda Samrakshana as an important Swadharma to protect Veda.  I have to say few words about Sri Babu Vadhyar, an amazing person who has profound knowledge in all the subjects, whether it is Veda or its Temple Sthalapuranam, Temple architect, murals and sculptures and what not.  He was so helpful and kind throughout our stay in Rameshwaram. It was truly the Grace of Lord to have Sri Babu Vadhyar - a good human being as our guide and guru.   All the credit goes to him for making our trip to Rameshwaram and Ramanathapuram (Chennai) an evergreen memory.  I would suggest whoever visit Rameshwaram should get a knowledgeable, humble and pious person like Babu Vadhyar who can assist you selflessly as your tour guide.  At the end, we became so close to him like known for years.  In the meantime, Sri Babu Vadhyar mentioned about his one and only son Santhana Krishnan who is learning Veda from Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya Veda Patasala in Ramanathapuram Village .

We have collected information about the route from our driver on previous day itself.  Unfortunately, our driver could not follow us to Ramanathapuram, so we have decided to hire an auto.  It is one of the best and economical ways of transport inside Palakkad.  Later, we continued to explore many places inside Palakkad by hiring an auto.

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya Veda Pathasala, Veda Rakshana Samithi, 5/772 @ 773, Ramanathapuram, Palakkad -678 001,Ph: 0491 – 2547196 is situated in a small village called Ramanathapuram, Palakkad.  It can be reached in 15 minutes from Stadium Bus Stand by an auto while travel through Koppam/Puthur Road.  At the entrance of the village there is a Temple of Sri Lakshmi Narayana Swamy, Nagadevata and Poorna Pushkalambal Sametha Sri Ayyappaswamy.   On both the sides of the temple an Agraharam can be seen.

Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya Veda Pathasala was established in the year 1996.  It started functioning in a newly constructed two storied building in a land of 12,000 sq.ft, located in the middle of the Agraharam and was inaugurated by Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam in the year 2006  .  It stands elegantly amongst the beautiful and serene atmosphere of Ramanathapuram Agraharam away from the hustle of the town.

At the main entrance, there is a small place at the left corner for security check.  An old man came running after seeing us on the gate and introduced himself ‘Nanakkum ingathey watchman.  Kozhathaikaley Pathuppen etc..  Neengal yarai parka vanthirukkel? ’  We chorously said ‘Engalukku Santhana Krishnaney Parkkanam, Mudiyuma?’.  He said ‘ Oh ! besha parkalam vango vango’.  He took us through the wide and long garden just few yards before the main building.  It was absolutely fantastic place, well groomed plants and trees and so peaceful.  As we climbed through the steps to reach the office of the President, children started to flow from all around asking thousand questions.  Most of the children were at the age of 7/8/11/12 yrs.  For the first time seeing these much kids around us, felt so thrilling answering each and everyone’s questions.  As we led through the passage to Office Room, we met Guruji – Sri S. GiridharaGhanapathi (Yajurveda) who is teaching Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Rig Veda for the children.

Sri. R.S. Gopalakrishnan

Sri. Giridhar took us to office room and there we met a man with pleasing personality – Sri R.S.Gopalakrishnan.  We introduced to him and engaged in a fruitful conversation with him for more than an hour.  He educated us about the working style of Vedapatasala, daily routine, children’s need, functions and requirements of funds, utilization of funds etc….  After listening to him I said ‘ Its all not so easy, allvo Mama?’  He continued with a easygoing smile ‘Not at all..’ .  But his promising thoughts, positive energy and his confidence were amazing at this age too.  After sometime, Guruji informed us to join with the children for evening prayers.  Before leaving, we paid obeisance to one of the great man behind this prestigious institution.

In the meantime, Santhana Krishnan came in to office and greeted us.  I remember a few things which I really wanted to share with my blog readers.  The Founder of this Veda Padasala is Dr. Sri.  C.R.Swaminathan , a well known Vedic and Sanskrit Scholar from Chathapuram Village.  His immense contributions to preserve Vedic culture are commendable.     There are 51 children in different age groups from 6 to 14 yrs studying Rig, Yajur, Sama Veda in this Veda Padasala.  The children includes from Southern and Northern parts of India.   There are approved time table for the children to spend their times for studies and recreation. Well maintained rooms for the student’s stay, spotless prayer hall, Bojansala, long and wide passages, beautiful and serene play area etc.  I could sense a positive vibes in all their faces.  The duration of the course is 6 years.  All expenses of the students during their stay in the Vedapadasala, expenses like stationery, coaching, boarding, lodging, clothes, medical etc... are taken care by the Vedaraksha Samithi.  The Annual budget to meet the above expense is Rs. 25 Lakhs,  in which MSRVVP, Ujjain provides a grant around Rs. 8 lakhs to Vedarakshna Samithi, rest of the contributions were made by the philanthropists and people who have the deep desire to preserve Veda.  At the end of sixth year the student have to write an exam conducted by Maharshi Sandipani Rashtriya Veda Vidya Pratishthan (MSRVVP), Ujjain.  The Scholars are eligible for a grant from the institution to begin their career and for a good start in the process of preserving Veda.

We continued to explore the places inside the two storied building.  Watching children some are playing, some of them were engrossed in their studies with loud chanting of Veda, their free movement with happy faces around made us to forget the hours.  I also joined with them in their conversation and had a fantastic time.  We arrived at the prayer hall; all the children were seated in a line.  Some of the children were playing Mridangam for few minutes.  Guruji informed us that they are conducting a special prayer for us.  Oh ! Lord ! It was remarkable sight indeed to watch all the 51 children chanting Veda loudly, there was three session of Chanting of Vedas - Rig Veda – Yajur Veda – Sama Veda for few minutes.  The chanting session ended and the children started to leave the hall quietly.  Before leaving the prayer hall few children came running towards me saying that their Guruji asked to lighten the Vilakku in front of the deities.  Later, Guruji took us to a Vedic Tradition Eexhibition Hall; there we could watch all the required materials for conducting a Yagna and Yaga.  While returning, we both were speechless and busy making up our minds that we should visit this place once again to be with the happy faces all around………..

A Travelogue !! A Holy Trip to Kashi !! Part I X!!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara !!

I happened to read a mail regarding the holy trip to the sacrosanct place 'Kashi' .  The reproduced below is an article written by Mr. Ram and his travelling experiences to this holy land.  I am sure, this would be very useful for all of us who are really intend to take up a journey to 'Varanasi'.

The next day morning Sekar Sastrigal came to inform the day's itinerary. Seeing our discomfort, he was also extremely concerned. It was Hiranya Srardham, Punyaka Vachanam and other rituals on Day 2 at Kasi. This event took place at Sekar Sastrigal's residence. We completed the rituals safely and went back to Ashram where we had our lunch.

After 2 hours of sleep we got up and dressed in semi-formal attire (Veshti / Podavai) to the temples. It is surprising that such famous temples are in small 'gallis' / narrow roads. Mom also was there to have darshan of Anna Poorneswari .We had a good darshan of all other deities around Anna Poorneswari. From there we reached Kasi Viswanathar temple.

We were waiting to have a Darshan all along...! The one, entire World is waiting to have Darshan of Lord Kasi Viswanathar. We also had the Darshan of Dundi Ganapathy.   From Kasi Viswanathar temple, we went to have a Darshan of Goddess Kasi Visalakshi. There were people from some madam chanting vedic hymns. All of them looked like Sanyasins. The Darshan of Kasi . We had darshan of Karpagambal at Mylai. .

On the next day we were to travelling to Gaya by early noon.  On the very next day morning we set off again to Shivala Ghat for some more exciting experience...!

A Travelogue !! A Holy Trip to Kashi !! Part VII !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara !!

Having immersed safely the Veni Madhavar brought from Rameswaram at Prayagai, the sleep was  more peaceful.

In the morning at 6:30 , Mr. Vijay  who was our guide deputed by Sekar Sastrigal knocking the doors of our room. Here I should mention about Balananda Teerthashramam. It is an excellent no-frills traditional building, which is really huge with plenty of rooms. Few closed places are dusty, but all places used by people were clean with all the facilities including laundary.

Morning we went to Ganga through the nearby (5 to 10 minutes from Balananda Ashram) Shivala Ghat.  I had the Blessings of Lord Kasi Vishwanatha, had a  Holy Dip in Ganga holding my mom's hand...! What a Blessing.  She peacefully completed her Ganga Snanam and was helped by Vijay, our guide, back to Ashram. Myself and the kids were excited and never felt like coming out. Since we had the sankalpam around 10 am, we were forced to come out of our bath. We later dressed in traditional attire and went to a place near Sankara Madam for sankalpam. Sekar Sastrigal had informed us that there would be around thirty brahmins who will be present to bless us a Happy and Successful Kasi Yatra. I was amazed at the possibility of thirty Kasi Brahmins blessing  us for our Kasi Yatra...!

When we entered the hall, there were already quite a few Brahamanas and our sankalpam started.  The birth stars and Gothrams  were asked and recited accordingly.  The brahmanas crowd started increasing and Sekar Sastrigal was on the top of his voice to tell the mantras. The Holy Vedas getting into our ears, it was really a   thrilling experience. Then there was the Guru of Sekar Sastrigal, who chanted certain specific mantras for our wellbeing and for good Kasi Yatra.

After providing due respects to all the Brahamanas we set off to Manikarnigha Ghat on boat. We climbed the steps to reach Chakra Theertham, which was across the road and needed to climb down.  We did 'Prokshanam' of  chakra theertham and brought some theertham back in a vessel to the boat to sprinkle on the kids.

We  had a bath again  in Manikarnigha ghat. The steps here are very very very slippery and one is advised utmost caution while getting down. Kasi is the place where you never feel like telling  'No' to anyone asking for alms...! You naturally tend to give them, without questioning...! I strictly followed Sekar Sastrigal's advice on this front.

In the evening, I was describing my Mom about the brahmanas at Sankalpam and told around thirty had come. Sekar Sastrigal, who came there told that it was not thirty, but fifty eight to be precise...! I was amazed. Brahmanas representing Rig, Yaju, Sama and Atharvana Vedham were there. Additionally, under Yajur, two sets of people with Krishna-Yajur and Sukla-Yajur were there he informed. He told all the Vedas recited for Happy and Successful Kasi Yatra...! I was moved...!

Then we moved on to have a darshan of Ganga Maha Aarathi.
