As we have reached early morning to this temple, in the outer praharam we could feel the utmost tranquillity.  The inner praharam was crowded with devotees of Lord Muruga.  Amongst them we could listen a voice of a saintly person singing  Thirupukazh melodiously.

Sri Kumarakottam Temple dedicated to Lord Muruga is one of the oldest temples located in Kanchi.  Saint Kachiappa Sivachariar – a fervent devotee of Lord Muruga composed Kanda Puram and made publicly in the divine presence of Lord Skandha in this Temple.  On daily basis Sri Kachiappa Sivachariar inscribes his work about the glories of Lord Muruga and deposits them in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.  He continued this practice for quite sometimes.  On the other hand, each night Lord Muruga goes on verifying the manuscript prepared by Sri Kachiappa Sivachariar for any corrections or omission.  Thus, Kandha Puranam written by Kachiappa Sivachariar considered as an exemplary work approved by Lord Muruga.

Skandha Puranam describes a marvelous incident about Lord Brahma’s visit to Mount Kailash to meet Lord Shiva.  Lord Brahma met the two adorable children – Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga were playing on his way but he did not pay any attention to them.   Lord Muruga felt humiliated when Lord Brahma preceded his journey to Mount Kailash without paying attention to them.  Lord Muruga intervened and enquired Lord Brahma ‘Who are you?’ Lord Brahma proudly replied that He have profound knowledge in Veda, He is the Creator etc…Lord Muruga continued to ask many questions to Lord Brahma and each were answered pompously by Lord Brahma.   At one point, Lord Muruga interrupted Lord Brahma’s journey towards Mount Kailash and questioned Him the meaning of ‘Pranavam’.    Lord Brahma was not aware of the answer of the same.  Seeing Lord Brahma in a dilemma, Lord Muruga imprisoned Him.   Lord Shiva instructed His son to perform penance as a consensus for the above impish act.

This temple enshrines sannidhis of Lord Vinayaka, Palani Andavar, Ooragam Ulla Perumal, Navagrahas, Shamugha, Saint Arunagirinathar, Lord Shiva, Lord Muruga with his consorts Sri Valli and Sri Deivayanai; in the courtyard the statues of Saint Sri Kachiappa Sivachariyar and Vallalar Adikal / Vallalar Sri Ramalinga Swamigal also can be seen.  Special poojas were carried out on every Tuesdays and Krithikai.  The festivals like Skandha Shashti Vizha and Vaikasi Visakham are celebrated in a grand manner.
