Significance of Uma Maheshwara Vratham !!

Uma Maheshwara Vratham is one of Ashtamavrathas (Skandha Puranam) observed in the full moon day in the month of Karthikai, provides abundance of meritorious reward.  On this day, performance of austerities with utmost faith, in the early morning hours, abstain from sensual pleasure and fasting, veneration of the idol of Lord Uma Maheshwara made of gold or silver, offerings of flowers, fruits, fragrant wood, etc… and donate the idol of Lord Uma Maheshwara to a zealous devotee.  Whoever observes the austerities of Uma Maheshwara Vratham would be blessed with fulfillment of desires eventually attains the abode of Lord Shiva.

Singnificance:

 
Lord Brahma attained Goddess Sri Gayathri & Sri Savithri as his consorts
Sage Dhiranabhindhu attained eye sight
Lord Krishna underwent severe austerities and worshiped Lord Uma Maheshwara and begot many offspring
 Sage Vashishta attained Kamadhenu/Surabhi for his Yagna purposes

Sage Gauthama attained virtuous son Sadhanantha
Rajarishi Janaka attained Goddess Sita as his daughter
A chaste woman sincerely followed the austerities of Uma Maheshwara Vratham and got her dead husband back into life.  In due course of time, she gave birth to a child and eventually attained the abode of Lord Shiva.
Sudharman an un intellect was made fun as a dumb by the people, underwent austerities with intense devotion and attained supreme knowledge with the grace of Goddess Sri Saraswathy, later he became one of the renowned scholar.
King Sindhusena was exiled from his Kingdom, underwent austerities of Uma Maheshwara Vratham at the divine instruction of Sage Agasthya.  Lord Kubera won back the Kingdom after a fierce battle at the instruction of Lord Uma Maheshwara and handed over the Kingdom to King Sindhusena.

Thiruneelakkudi is one of 275 Thevara Shivasthalam located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.   In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

Abhimana Kshetram !! Thiru Agastheeswarar Temple / Angaraka Kshethram at Villivakkam !!

Ilvalapuram /Vilvaranyam Thiru Agastheeshwarar temple located at East Mada Street, Villivakkam, Chennai.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built during the 700 A.D. by the King Kulothunga Chola.

Significance:
Sage Agastya witnessed the marriage ceremony of the divine couple in this sacred shrine.
Sage Atri’s son Druva married to Ashwamukhi, sister of Shoorapadma.   Agastya vanquished the demon Vilvalan and Vathapi
Angaraka was afflicted with the curse, in order to get rid of the terrible consequences; he arrived on this sacred place and created a pond ‘Angaraka Theertham’.  He underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva.

The legend has that Mount Kailash was full of activity at the time of the wedding of the celestial couple Lord Shiva and Goddess Sri Parvathi.  Sage Agastya visited mount Kailash, due to the immensity of the deities, Rishis and Sages presents to witness the divine wedding,   Earth was off centered and lean to one sided, eventually Sage Agastya was assigned to come down to the southern part of the Earth.  Sage Agastya visited this sacred place and underwent severe austerities at the divine instruction of Lord Shiva.  The two demons Vilvalan and Vathapi created impediments to his penance, Sage Agastya vanquished the demons and afflicted with the sin of Brahmahathya.   In order to get rid of the sin, Sage Agastya consecrated a Linga /Agastya Lingam and worshipped Lord Shiva and witnessed the marriage of the celestial couple. 
This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and 4.00 PM to 8.30 PM in the evenings.

Vrishabadhri Puram/Vrishachalam/Then Kailayam/Dakshina Kailasam/Thrissivaperur/Thiru Shiva Perur Sri Vadakkunnatha Temple is the first Shiva temple in Kerala consecrated by Lord Parasurama located in Thrissur City, Kerala.  This is one of the prominent temples of Lord Shiva in Kerala which is famous for exquisite craftsmanship and fresco depicts the legend from great epic Mahabharath.

The presiding deity is not visible; in its place mount of Ghee appeared in the sanctum is venerated with ghee for several years’ remains without any foul smell.    It is believed that the ghee has the capabilities to cure all kind of illnesses.
Festivals – Ashta Dravya Mahaganapathi Havana along with Anayut/feeding elephant, a ceremonial performance to please the deity and offering Appam/Sweetened rice cake fried in ghee as Bhog to Lord Ganesha/Lord of remover of obstacles.
Mahashivaratri, Thrikkarthika, Thrissur Pooram are the major festivals of this temple.  Thrissur Pooram is a magnificent event of this temple which attracts huge crowd from all over India, glorious procession of Lord Krishna of Thiruvambadi and Goddess Devi of Paramekkavu along with the divine instruments like percussions, wind instruments, altering marvelous parasol, fireworks etc... are exceptional delight for the devotees.
This temple remains open from 3.00 AM to 10.30 AM in the morning and 4.00 PM to 8.30 PM in the evenings.

Thiruvannamalai is one of the Pancha Bhootha Kshetram of Lord Shiva represent as Fire, one of the five elements of nature.  The practice of circumambulation of the temple and the mountain Annamalai with bare foot known as Girivalam, one of the effective and superior forms of Yoga considered as a sacred deed.   The Worship of Ashta Linga such as Indra Linga, Agni Linga, Yama Linga, Niruthi Linga, Varuna Linga, Vayu Linga, Kubera Linga, Esanya Linga installed by Lord Indra, Lord Agani, Lord Yama, Lord Nirthi, Lord Varuna, Lord Vayu, Lord Kubera and Lord Esanya respectively, located 14km circumference of the hill provides abundance of devoutness to the worshipper.   This holy hill of Thiruvannamalai was a symbol of ‘Fire’ in Kritha Yuga, Emerald in Thretha Yuga, Gold in Dwapara Yuga and it represents rock in Kaliyuga.  There are Eight Lingas known as Ashta Linga located on the eight directions in octagonal structure on the circumambulatory ways worshipped by the deities.  This circumambulation path ways is extended up to the length of 14km, considered as magnificent Abode of Siddhars and holy men.  Worshippers undertake the practice of circumambulation of the hill on the day of full moon/Purnima considered as one of the most propitious act, provides commendable rewards.

Sri Someshwara Temple is one of the oldes temples built during 12th and 13th centuries by the Kings of Chola Dynasty and it is situated in Halasuru (Ulsoor), Bangalore. Halasuru is formerly known as Ulsoor, one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Bangalore, State of Karnataka.  This temple has the most remarkable architectural styles of Hoysala and Vijayanagara. This temple revelas the stunning architectural brilliance of that era, the striking pillars inside the temple produces the sounds of music when tapped. The majestically stands Rajagopuram, Dwajasthambam and the ancient scriptures inscribed on the wall are some of the stunning features of this temple.  During 16th century the temple has been rebuilt, an addition of compound wall and majestic Rajagopuram was rebuilt by the chieftain Kempe Gowda.

Muktheshwar Dham / Muktheshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva situated 51km from Ninital, Uttaranchal. This temple is located at the elevation of 2,285 mts high above the sea level in the hills of Lohit Giri, Nainital district in the state of Uttarakhand.    This is one of the old temples situated at the peak of Muktheshwar Hill embellished with lush green and in a serene ambiance. It is believed that Naini Lake where Lord Shiva performed his Rudra Thadava with the lifeless body of Sri Uma, as an aftermath of  the Yaga performed by Daksha.   The unblemished beauty and spectacular view of Himalayan range from this temple attracts millions and millions of pilgrims to this temple.   The famous temples of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Nandaghunti, Trishul and Panchachuli also visible from the peak of Muktheshwar, the Nilkanta Peak bear a resemblance to Lord Shiva and Trishul mountain stands majestically as a a sign of Trident of Lord Shiva.   This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva existing from the date back to 350 years.  The legend has that Lord Shiva killed a demon and provide salvation at this peak, thus the temple has got its name ‘Muktheshwar’.
                                                                              

The Presiding deity of this temple is Lord Shiva worshipped in the form Linga made of white marble.  This temple also enshrines Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Lord Nandi and Lord Anjaneya.  The reverberating sounds of temple bells from the hills of Mukteshwar can be heard at an extensive distance create a divine environment.

Bhuvaneshwar is the capital of Orrissa – known as 'Land of Thousand Temple' is situated on the south west to River Mahanadhi. 

Lingaraj Temple is dedicated to Lord Hari Hara, the Linga - phallus form of Lord is worshipped as both Lord Hara and Lord Hari, bringing the Saiva and Vaishnava sects in harmony.   This is one of the oldest temples existing from the date bact to 1100 years is  located in Bhuvaneshwar (Ekamratha Theertham – Brahma Puranam), Orrissa was built by King Yayati Kesari in 7th century.  In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self manifested Linga. The temple carries exceptionally beautiful carvings, structures and architectural style reveals the remarkable creaftsmanship of Kalingas.  This gigantic temple occupies massive acres of land.  The spacious courtyard of this temple comprises many shrines of Gods and Goddesses.  The majestic ‘Simha Dwara’ – Lion Gate is the entry point to this temple.

In the Garbha Griha – Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self manifested Linga made of granite stone.  There are images of Lord Ganesha, Lord Karthikeya and Goddess Parvathy also can be seen.   In order to strengthen the worship of Lord Hara and Lord Hari, there is Trident (Trishul) and Dice (Chakra) symbols positioned at the entrance of this temple.  The huge courtyard holds Yajya Sala, Bhoga Mandapam and Natya Sala.  


The legend has that; Lord Shiva diclosed his personal opinion to Goddess Parvathy during their private conversation that Ekamratha Theertham is one of his most favorite place to reside than Varanasi.  Goddess Parvathy was curious to visit Ekamratha Theertham; she disguised herself into a cowherd woman and left to Bhuvaneshwar.   In the meantime, there was two demon named Krithi and Vasa fallen for Goddess and requested to marry them.  Goddess Parvathy affectionately asked them to carry her on their shoulder.  The two demons sincerely carried Goddess Parvathy on their shoulders; Goddess crushed the two demons with her weight effortlessly.  After killing the two demons by Goddess Parvathy in order to quench her thirst Lord Shiva created a Lake – Bindu Sagar.   He himself assumed the form as ‘Krithivasa’ / Lingaraj in Ekamratha Theertham came to known as Bhuvaneshwar in the later years.

Sangameshwarar Temple, Bhavani – Erode

Sangameshwarar Temple is located in Bhavani (Tirunana), which is 56kms away from Salem and 15 km from the District of Erode.  The presiding deity of this temple is Sanghameshwarar with His consort Vedha Nayaki.  This is one of the Thevara Padal Petra Idam, Thiru Gnana Sambar – one of 63 Nayanmars (saintly persons) sung praising the glory of Lord Shiva.



Sangameshwarar Temple is situated on a four acre land on the northern bank, at the convergent point of two rivers Bhavani and Cauvery also known as Dakshin Prayag.  Hence the presiding deity Lord Shiva came to known as Sangameshwarar; take a holy dip in Prayag purifies mind and body as well.  The Rajagopuram stands majestically with five tiers positioned on the north.  There are separate shrines for Lord Vinayaka, Lord Dakshinamurty, Goddess Durga, Lord Nataraja, Sri Adi Keshava Peruma with his Consort Soundaravalli Thayar, Lord Subramanya and Lord Natarajar.   On the south beautifully positioned 63 Nayanmars can be seen. The shrine of Sri Vedha Nayaki Thayar is facing east in this temple. Saint Arunagirinathar composed many songs praising the glory of Lord Subramanya in Thirunana.


One of the attractions of this temple is ‘Ivory Cradle’ presented by Mr. William Garrow – who was the Collector of Coimbatore and Salem during the East India Company regime.  He was an ardent devotee of Goddess Vedha Nayaki.  During those days, only Hindus were allowed to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum, Mr. William Garrow used to worship Goddess Vedha Nayaki through a small opening made on the wall.  One night Goddess Vedha Nayaki appeared on his dream and instructed to leave the bungalow immediately.  Mr. William Garrow followed the instruction of Goddess Vedha Nayaki at once, soon after the whole Bungalow collapsed.  As a mark of gratitude to Goddess who saved his life, Mr. William Garrow contributed an ‘Ivory Cradle’ as an offering to Goddess Vedha Nayaki.

This temple remains open from 5 AM to 1 PM in the morning and 4 PM to 8 PM in the evening.

Bhoga Nandishwara Temple at Nandi Hills is located in Nandi Village, near Chikballapur.  This temple is very close to Bangalore International Airport.  Nandi village is situated 60km North of Bangalore, Karnataka.  Two Shiva temples were built here, one at the foot of the hill – Bhoga Nandishwara and another at the hill top – Yoga Nandeeswara.  Bhoga Nandishwara Temple represents the pinnacle of Temple Architectural skills existed at the period of 9th century.  The rulers of Banas, Cholas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagar Emperors have made several contributions to this temple. 

The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva with His consort Goddess Parvathy.  It is one of the magnificent temples in the State of Karnataka exists dating back to thousand years.  Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Linga – Brighadishwara and Lord Nandi stands majestically in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple.  This temple was built by Cholas, as marks of reverence to the emperor a statue of King Rajendra Chola also have been positioned here.   The Kalyana Mandapam and Thulabara Mandapam are the two additional attractions were contributed by the Vijayanagara Emperors.  Shringi Theertham - The temple tank known for Lord Nandi plunged his horns on the ground to bring water from holy river Ganga.  The five hills situated are the source of five rivers known as Palar, Pinakini, Akravathi, Papagni and Swarnamukhi.

This glorious temple of Bhoga Nandishwara – Lord Shiva symbolizes in His youthful form.  This temple also houses the shrines of Sri Arunachaleshwara – Childhood form of Lord Shiva and Sri Uma Maheshwara.   Sri Arunachaleshwara Temple was built by Gangas.  It has Sannidhi of Simha Ganapathy/Ugra Ganapathy and Lord Nandi made of granite stands majestically in front of the temple.  The Uma Maheshwara Temple – Lord Maheshwara with His consort Goddess Uma was built by Hoysalas.  It has a grand Kalyana Mandapam  with grandiose pillars bears striking murals of  Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvathy, Lord Brahma with Goddess Saraswathy and Lord Vishnu with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi and murals of Lord Agni and Swaha Devi also can be seen,  commemorates the glorious marriage of the divine couple Lord Maheshwara with Goddess Uma.  The structure of the Kalyana Mandapam covers the paintings and intricate carvings on the wall are a depiction of typical Hoysalas.
