Gita Jayanthi Celebration....!! Eighteenth Chapter !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Om Namo Bagavathey Vasudevaya !!

In Eighteenth Chapter - Moksha Sanyasa Yoga: - The conclusion of the nectar speech of Lord Krishna to Arjuna at the Dharmakshetram - Kurushetram.  Lord Krishna encourages Arjuna to do his responsibilities through all the life giving lessons.  At the end, Arjuna's blind beliefs and grief vanishes and he fought against the Kauravas.  The prime lesson of performance of one's responsibility without ego, attachment, selfish motive and without expecting fruit of action leads to liberation.

Arjuna expresses his desire to know about the true renounciation to Lord Krishna.    Withdrawing from the responsibilities due to fear and pain is Rajassik,  abandoning the same is known as Tamassik.  Performance of responsibilities without attachment and fruit of action is Swatik nature.    The outcome of the cosmic natures of Tamasik, Rajasik and Swathik follows after death.  The five causes Body, Mind, Panchadriyas, Karmedriyas,  and the Soul (Paramatma) are responsibile for every action.  The virtuous deeds, without selfish motive, unlimited desires, attachment and fruit of action are known as 'Sacrifices'.  The true essence of renounciation is neither hate the unpleasant nor enjoy the pleasures.  Rajassik are incapable to distinguish and understand the difference of Dharma and Adharma.  Tamassik assert Adharmas as Dharma from utter ignorance.  Swatik who follows only Dharma  with the purity of mind and lead a righteous life.  Rajassik long for the fulfillment of desires, yearn for material achievement, pleasures and attachments.  Tamasik are not willing to change their attitudes towards food, sleep, fear, grief, despair and laziness.  With the purity of Mind and Self-realisation, one can come out of these worldly bondages and achieve the highest merit of liberation.

The  Varnas - such as Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra and their responsibilities are distributed among them.   Truthfulness, Serenity, Honesty, Forgiveness, Kindness, Performing Sacrifices, Receiving alms, acquiring knowledge for self-improvement, sharing the same and Austerity should be followed by a Brahmin.  The duties of Kshatriyas are Courageousness, Truthfullness, Honesty, Kindness,  Generosity, Protecting sacrifices and giving alms, Fighting for the country, Protecting the Country from its enemies and ensuring the welfare of the people in the Kingdom.  The Vaishyas should follow the agriculture and animal husbandry  related activities to ensure the flow of foodgrains.  The Shudras should be ever willing to serve the above Varnas with full heart.  One who performs his duties and responsibilities according to his/her Varnam gets purified and attains the Abode of Lord Vishnu.  The purity of mind and worship of Lord with utmost devotion and faith attain perfection.  One who does not follow the Dharma and responsibilities prescribed commits sin.  The search for 'BRAHMAM' completes when one is free from all  the desires, passions, ego, anger, arrogance, attachment, worldly bondages with good self- control, self- realisation, neither hatred nor attraction, dwelling in solitude, eating to survive, complete control over the senses, dispassionate and engrossed in meditation.  Performing all the responsibilities and taking refugee in Lord attains Moksha.

The Supreme Lord dwells in  every individual soul.  One who teaches  the Divine Nectar Speech of Lord are dearer to Lord Krishna.  One who listens and follows them with utmost faith and devotion are also freed from all the evils and attains liberation.

The prolonged eighteen days of divine speech of Lord Krishna made Arjuna get cleared from all the doubts and delusion.

The above narrated were the wonderful dialogues between Lord Krishna and Arjuna in the Dharmakshetram - Kurushetram  during the Great War of Mahabharata.  Sanjaya - the Charioteer of  Dhrutharashtra , gained  the Grace of Lord Veda Vyasa to listen to the Divine nectar speech of Lord Krishna to Arjuna.

Whoever worships Lord Krishna along with Arjuna, attains all the  Happiness, Prosperity and Success.

Om Namo Bagavathey Vasudevaya !!

In Seventeenth  chapter - Sradhhathraya Vibhaga Yoga: - In this chapter Lord Krishna explains that, the Faith in the individual is inherited from the Gunas.  The Swatik worship Lord with utmost faith and devotion.  The Rajasik worship Yakshas and Rakshasas and the Tamasik worship Ghosts and spirits.  Those who practise the severe austerities forbidden in the scriptures due to ego, lust and attachment  are senseless.

The intake of food differs among the individuals of the three Gunas.  The Swatik prefer food of  pure nature which add the longevity of  good health, purity of body, joy and happiness.  The Rajassik prefer burning, hot, spicy, bitter, sour, saline and pungent food which bring grief, pain and illness.  The Tamassik prefer impure, blunt, rotten and stale food which results in laziness.  The Swatik people follow all the righteousness,  perform sacrifices,  give alms,  follow their life strictly with firm belief, consider and follow the scriptures as a part of  their responsibility .    The Rajassik Yagna were made seeking rewards.  Whatever the Tamassik follow, were out of disbelief and against sacred scriptures.  The austerity in speech is, Speak the Truth and the speech must be pleasant.   Manu Smrithi says, One should not speak the truth if it  is unpleasant and something pleasant but false.  The austerity of mind is Pure nature, good self-control, Serenity of mind and kind heartedness.  One who practises the austerities of mind, body and speech without expecting any reward with utmost faith, are Satwik.  The Rajassik practise with an intention to gain fleeting fame and reward, which are unstable and vanishes in no time.  The practises of austerities out of torturing oneself, harmful to others, out of foolish notion are Tamasik.

Lord Krishna continues, the unholy places are the places where beggars and thieves assemble, the places where gamblers gather to make money, gathering of evil doers, group of women of evil reputation and the places where  wealth is being acquired illegaly.

Finally, whatever sacrifices and austerity made out of lack of Faith is mere waste.  The practises of Austerities, performing sacrifices and Charities without dedicating to Lord is Asat - lifeless - meaningless.

Om Namo Bagavathey Vasudevaya !!

In Fifteenth Chapter - Purushothama Yoga: - In this Chapter Lord Krishna reveals the Truth of the Existence of all living and non-living beings in this Universe.  A simple phenomenon of how the Tree originated from its roots and stands high on its stem with branches spreaded all over and beautifully carrying flowers and fruits on it.  The root of the mysterious Tree mentioned here is the 'Paramathma'. One who attains realisation knows the truth of the 'Samsara' (material world) is nothing but an illusion (Maya),  one who doesn't know  the 'Truth'    are trapped into 'Maya' of  the material world of Samsara.  The enlightened one knows to  repossess from attachment and passion.  The Supreme Lord of Veda is Imperishable and exists in the individual soul.

The continuous rememberance of Lord with utmost devotion and Love brings Self - Realisation.  The eternal goal of salvation is possible only by keeping away from desire.  It is the root cause of all the evils, pride, illusion and pleasure  which leads to pain from attachments.  He who is seated in the heart of everyone, Sanyasins and Yogis realises the Truth.  The unintelligent and imperceptive doest not realize the existence of Him.  He is Vedam and He is Vedanta.

The Sixteenth Chapter - Daivasura Sambath vibhaga Yoga: -   In this chapter the most compassionate Lord Krishna explains how to attain Salvation.    He describes the Virtue and non-Virtues.  The Supreme Lord describes the way to attain liberation from the cycles of Birth and Death and the realisation of God.  Thereby, achieving the highest goal in the spiritual life of happiness and peace.  The divine act leads to liberation and the opposite leads to world of attachments.  Purity  of mind and heart, Truthfulness, devotion to Lord and good conducts are part of divine acts.    One who deviates from the divine act and leads a life of two-legged beast thrust themselves into darkness.  These kind of acts make one's life miserable and others too.  Caught in the middle of sensual pleasures and pain, one degrades life with countless desires, pride, egoism, arrogance bringing awful fate.  A Wise person always chooses the divine way to achieve God-realisation  thereby spiritual upliftment.

The Virtues are Fearlessness, Honesty, Perform Sacrifices, Giving alms, Attainment of Knowledge, Purity of mind and heart, Control over the sense, Austerity, Truthfulness, Straightforwardness, Absence from Anger and Crookedness, Honesty, modesty, gentleness, kindness, harmlessness, Absence of proud, jealousy and forgivness are the divine nature.

The  resemblance of demon natures are Anger, Jealous, Pride, Lust, Endless desires, Wickedness, Untruthfulness, Crookedness, Ignorance, Arrogance and double standards which can provide only Grief and leads to fall again and again in this material world of bondage other than nothing else.

In Thirteenth Chapter - Kshetrakshetrajya Vibhaga  Yoga: - Arjuna shows his curiosity to learn about Prakriti (The Nature) and the Atman (Soul).  The most compassionate Lord Krishna explains, the body is the source of Five Elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether,  'Panchendriyas' (Nose, Eyes, Tongue, Ears, Skin) and 'Karmedhriyas' known as (Legs, Hands, Mouth, reproductive Organs and Anus).  God-Realisation  is possible only through Self, Meditation, Jyana Yoga and Karma Yoga.  The body undergoes tremendous changes.  The Supreme Lord is Birthless, Deathless and Changeless.  Everything begins from Him and dissolves in Him.

In Fourteenth Chapter - Gunathraya Vibhaga Yoga: -   In this chapter Lord Krishna explains about the three Gunas - Swatik, Rajass and Tamass present in all human beings.  The level of Gunas predominant in the individual depends on the practises and effort they undertake.  The three cosmic nature remaining in all the human beings is the ultimate truth.  Swatik Guna leads to acquiring knowledge thereby bringing ultimate happiness, peace and wisdom.  The Rajoguna brings grief , attachments towards material things, desires and lack of peace of mind.  The Tamoguna brings ignorance, laziness and delusion.  The fruit of good actions of Swatik nature brings purity.  The fruit of Rajassik actions brings only grief nothing else.  Tamassik guna is the worst among all.  The prevelance of Gunas are responsible for every action.  The aspirant who has  consistent faith and devotion towards Lord, crosses the level above all three Gunas of  Swatik, Rajass and Tamass.  Thus, they realize 'Brahmam'  as the eternal and absolute 'Bliss'.

The Eleventh Chapter - Vishwaroopa Dharshana Yoga: - Arjuna regains the  reality out of his Illusion by the compassionate speeach about the Glory of Krishna.  Arjuna requests Krishna to show His Divine Form (Vishwaroopa Dharshan).  Krishna describes that His forms are countless, different in kinds, colours and shape.  Krishna reveals the Truth that the whole Universe and its living and non-living beings are centered in His body.  It is possible to visualise only with  the divine eyes. The inner eye of perpetual devotion and dedication is only possible to visualise them.

Sanjaya who is the narrator to Dhrutharashtra explains The Supreme Lord - Hari revealed his Majestic Divine Form.  The Vishwaroopa of Lord Hari - with numerous Faces,  Ornaments,  Weapons - The Embodiement of Beauty was the result of thousands of  blazing Adithyas which appeared in the sky.  Arjuna could visualize the entire Universe with its divisions in Krishna's body.  After seeing the Cosmic Form of Lord Hari with Conch, Disc, Mace, Shargam, Arjuna praised the Glory of the Lord.  The Rudras, Adithyas, Manus, Vasus, Sandhya, Vishwadeva, Gandharvas, Rakshasas, Ashwin Devathas, Maruthganas, Rishis and Sages all assembled to view the Cosmic Form of Lord Hari with astonishment.  After seeing the Gigantic Cosmic form, Arjuna was terrified to see all the Warriors of the Opposite Army of Kauravas rushing into the giant mouth of Lord Hari.  Arjuna fully regained the sense and requested Lord Krishna to turn back into His normal Form.  Arjuna understood the True Fact that Krishna is the Cause and Effect, he is just an instrument in the hands of Lord Hari.

Sanjaya explains to Dhrutharashtra that Arjuna prostrated  Krishna  and with a trembling voice approached Krishna.  The Supreme Lord with infinite forms is Imperishable and He is the proper object to worship with devotion and love.  Arjuna apologizes to Krishna for whatever he had uttered due to love and carelessness.

The Twelvth Chapter - Bakthi Yoga: - This chapter emphasises the practice of Bakthi - Devotion to Lord is much easier than acquiring and searching knowledge.  The aspirants who strive for Moksha - Salvation worships Lord in His Cosmic form.  The worshipper loves Him, adores Him, sings and chants glory of Him and remembers Him.  Thus they attain union with the Lord and visualise Godliness in all the existence.  In acquiring knowledge, worshipping the Lord and meditating on the  Formless 'Brahmam'  is very difficult to bring into practice by abandoning the attachment to body and dispassionate to material things.

Krishna explains to Arjuna the Practice of Bakthi - devotion by bringing utmost concentration to Lord, though it often shows the tendency to wander.  One should dedicate all the actions and the fruits of action to Lord.  One who surrenders to Lord with full faith and devotion is never left by Him.

A true devotee never has attachment towards anything and never has any aversion.  He possesses a balanced mind at all circumstances.  He never gets agitated by the things happening around, nor causes any agitation to others.  He is desireless and expresses the joy of Lord within him.  He is unaffected by pain, grief, joy and honour.  He is already surrendered to Lord within him and rejoices the peace within him.

The Tenth Chapter - Viboothi Yoga: - The most compassionate Lord Krishna encourages Arjuna from his state of rejection of doing his Karma.  Krishna expresses the truth that, even the deities and great sages are unaware of His origin.  He is the origin of Cause and Effect.  The qualities of Wisdom, Intelligence, Fame, contentment, austerity, Forgiveness, Truthfulness, Happiness and Sorrow,  Death and Birth,  Fear and Fearlessness begins from Him.  The Saptharishis and Manus were born from Lord Krishna, as a result of their austerities to the Lord.  Who understands the Truth of Him as sources of everything, surrender to Him.  Who surrenders to Him with Pure Love, dedication and devotion will obtain the Grace of Lord.  With the Grace of Lord, the ignorance destroys and the light of wisdom awakens.

Krishna continues his life - giving nectar like speech, He is one among the twelve Adityas, He is one among the moon,  He is one among the Maruth Ganas -Marichi,  He is One among the Four Vedas - Sama Veda, He is Vasava among the Deities, Among the five senses - He is the mind,  which restores intelligence.  He is Shankara - among the Rudras,  He is  Kubera among the   Rakshasas and Yakshas,  He is Pavaka amongst Vasu, He is Meru among the Sapthagiris.  Among the Rajagurus He is Brihaspathi, He is Skanda among the Army Generals, He is the Ocean.  He is Brigu among the Great Sages, Among the sounds He is The Om, Among sacrifices He is the sacrifice of Silent repititor.  He is the Himalayas. He is the Peepal tree among the Trees, He is Narada among the Saptharishis , He is Chitrarathas among the Gandharvas,  He is Kapila among the sages, He is Ucchaisravas, He is Airavatha, He is thunderbolt among the weapons and He is Surabhi - Kamadhenu, He is the God of Love, He is Vasuki among the serpents, He is Anantha, Varuna, Aryaman, and Yama.  He is Prahlada, He is Garuda among the birds, He is the Lion among the beasts.  He is the Wind, He is Rama among the Great Warriors.  He is Ganges among the great rivers, He is the Shark among the fishes.  He dwells in the feminine qualities of Kshama (patience), Fame, Intelligence, Memory, Firmness, Forgiveness and prosperity.   He is Brihasaman among the hymns, He is Gayatri, He is Margashirsha among the months,  He is the flowery season.  He is the Superior among the Splendour, Goodness and determination and He is Victory. He is Vasudeva among the Vrishnis, He is Arjuna among the Pandavas, He is Veda Vyasa among the Sages, He is Ushana among the poets.  Finally, Nothing can exist, whether its Movable or Immovable without Him.

Margashirsha Sukla Paksha Dwadashi - falls on 18th of December, 2010.  The day is widely celebrated  as Gita Jayanthi.  According to Hindu Puranas, it is believed to be the origin of Srimad Bhagavad Gita that took place on this day - The Great Teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna at Dharmashetram known as Kurushetra.

The origin of Srimad Bhagavad Gita took place six thousand years ago during the Kurushetra War between the Pandavas and the Kauravas.   Srimad Bhagavad Gita contains 700 verses in eighteen chapters.   Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna the importance of Karma and reveals the Eternal Truth -  He is the Effect and  Cause.

In the First Chapter - Arjuna Vishadha Yoga - In the dharmakshetram - Kurushetra, the Pandavas and Kauravas with their warriors assembled in the great war field.  On the Pandavas' side was Lord Krishna - The Charioteer with limited warriors.  Arjuna blew the conch - Devadatta as the beginning of the battle.  Arjuna requested his Charioteer - Lord Krishna to place the Chariot in a place where he could visualise the warriors of the Kauravas.  Arjuna was bewildered to see the great warriors of Kauravas His opponents were his fathers, grand fathers, Bhishma Pitamaha, Uncles, Teachers, Grandsons, Relatives and Comrades.  After seeing his own people, Arjuna got into a distressed state.  He was in a dilemma to kill his own people for the Kingdom and for pleasure.  He wanted to withdraw himself from the scene. He lost all the enthusiasm to fight against the enemies and his bow slipped down.

The Second Chapter - Sangya Yoga - In this chapter Lord Krishna begins to speak.  After seeing the dejected state of Arjuna, Krishna advices him to leave the attachment towards everyone and follow the Karma, that is fight for the right share in the Kingdom of Hastinapur.  Helpless Arjuna completely surrenders to the Lord seeking wise advice.  Lord Krishna explains, Atman is eternal and the body is perishable.  Atman never dies.  Krishna invoked Arjuna to fight without expecting any results.  One should not be concerned about the fruit of action, Victory or Defeat, Gain or Loss, it is the Paramathma who decides.  One should act with a balanced mind and remain calm in extreme cold or Heat,  Pain or Pleasure and Krishna prompts Arjuna to do his duty.

The Third Chapter - Karma Yoga - In this chapter, Krishna explains the importance of Karma.  No one can stay without any action.  Krishna compells Arjuna to follow his duty without any action.  Krishna explains about the Kinga Janaka.  Though he attained the epitome of wisdom and  realisation, he did not stop his responsibility to perform as a King.  Krishna advices Arjuna that, the Prakriti (Nature) is made up of Rajass, Tamass, Swatik Gunas.  Atman is Sudhha Swatik, least affected by the three Gunas.  Krishna advices Arjuna to do his duties without any attachments.   Krishna reveals the truth that  desires  are the root causes of  all the evils.

The Fourth Chapter - Jyana Karma Sanyasa Yoga - Krishna declares the Truth that whenever evils take place, He will be born again and again to re-establish the righteousness in this Universe in order to bring Peace and Harmony.  A Liberated man is free from all kinds of attachments .He stay always calm and serene though engaged in action.  He is least affected by success and failure, joy and grief.   One attains true union with the Paramathma when he is free form Anger, Jealousy, Ego, Pride and free from attachements.  It has become possible only with the thorough knowledge. Through the Various kinds of sacrifices without the fruit of action, the heart is purified which  leads the way to Paramatma.  Krishna explains the Acharayan (Guru) who attained the realisation can only take the Jeevathma to Paramathma.  With ustmost dedication and devotion to Guru, who himself the manifestion of Lord can only save from the ignorance and delusion.  The divine wisdom burns all the sins like fuel in fire.  The ultimate Faith - In the  Paramathman - Lord takes away all the ignorance.  The intellectual knowledge is  not the only one which provide liberation.  Self- control, intense devotion, faith and true knowledge liberates man from worldly bondages.  With the guidance of Acharyan (Guru), by following the instructions of Guru,  by rendering sincere service to Guru, the dedication and devotion grows with steady pace.

The Fifth Chapter - Karma Sanyasa Yoga - In this chapter Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna about the self- less action which purifies the soul - Atman.  Arjuna was not  fully convinced of Lord Krishna throughout the entire episode of His teachings.  Krishna assertively describes the importance of Karma yogi who is always active, who is dedicates all his actions to the Lord.  He abandons all the attachments and desires, whose heart is purified and completely surrenders to Lord.  These kind of actions lead to no birth in the Samsara ( in the material world).  One who is free from ego, anger, pride, jealousy and free from all worldly bondages realises the 'Brahmam' absolute peace.  Krishna describes the importance of 'Pranayama' which brings control over the senses (Govinda).  Through the 'Pranayama' and control over the senses, one is free from all the desires and attains 'Realisation' 'Absolute Bliss'.

The Sixth Chapter - Dhyana Yoga - In this chapter Lord Krishna emphasises the importance of retrieval from the 'Desires'.  The Yogis and Sanyasins  who are freed from fruit of action and desires,  the absence of these two elements purifies the soul.  The desires and imaginations leads to Action.  The lower impulses of the body, mind and senses should  be dominated by the 'Realisation of God'.  To bring perfect harmony in whatever he sees, one should realise the existence of ' God' in All and in Everything.  No difference of friends and enemies, righteous and non-righteous.  Lord Krishna defines the importance of Meditation to bring balance of mind thereby bringing peace and tranquility.  Meditation is the practice in which one should select a  secluded place without any disturbance.  Krishna explains the meditating posture by keeping Head, neck and  spine in erect posture and the mind fixed to 'Paramathma' with utmost concentration.  The purity of body  (free from worldly pleasures), fearlessness of mind, the  eternal faith in 'Paramathma',  is essential for the success in meditation.  One should live a life of a moderate, by bringing proper limits in Sleep, Food and Recreations.  Realisation of God is possible by drawing perfect lines between the material life and the spiritual life in Search of Paramathma.  Sanyasins and Yogis are grown out of pleasures and worldly bondages, who realised the 'Atman' perfectly by bringing perfection Union with the 'Paramathma' - 'The Supreme Lord'.

The Seventh chapter - Jyana Vijyana Yoga -  In this chapter Lord Krishna explains the Five elements of Prakrithi (Nature).  Krishna reveals the eternal Truth that He is the Effect, He is the Cause, He is the Essence, He is the Substance and He is Everything in this Universe.  The three Gunas - Rajass, Tamass, and Swatik overrule with the influence of 'Maya' - Delusion, which can be eradicated with the Grace of Lord. Krishna explains the categories of devotees.  Some prefer to have material benefits (Wealth and Money) and the wise who prefer 'Salvation' (Moksham) approaches Lord with Pure Love.  The ultimate goal is the Lord Himself.   Lord prefers the second category as the dearest one, who will have no birth again in this material world.

The Eight Chapter - Akshara Brahma Yoga - Lord Krishna explains the 'Realisation of God' which brings 'Absolute Bliss' and no rebirth in the world of Pain and Sufferings.  Through the Pure Love to Lord, everything becomes auspicious.  With the continuous thinking of Lord, deep devotion, regular mediation, constant communion with the Lord at all times and places, circumstances and situations, everything can be turned out the most auspicious and blessed.  This is the practice to attain the Grace of Lord.  Krishna reveals the existence of Him in each and everything in the Universe.  And the very existence of Lord in individual souls.  The meticulous prayers and rememberings of the Lord constantly through Sadhana (Practice) makes one's life blessed with keeping away from re - birth in the material world of Pain and Sufferings.

The Ninth Chapter - Raja Vidhya Raja Guhya Yoga - In this chapter Lord Krishna explains the importance of Faith.  Krishna reveals the absolute Truth of  His Creation of the entire Universe, Preservation and the final absorption of the Universe.  Again the cycles of Creation , Preservation and dissolution repeats.  Who are unaware of the eternal truth are certain to take birth again and again in this material world.  In the tree processes of Creation, Preservation and Deluge, the Paramathma witnesses with complete silence, unaffected and unattached.  Krishna reveals the existence of 'Paramathma', He Himself  in all creatures.  Krishna emphasizes the practice of fixing the mind, body and soul, actions, emotions, will, everything  by surrendering to The Supreme Lord.  The pure love and devotion of the devotees goes to the Lord.  They are freed from all the worldly bondages.
