Sri Goswami Tulasi Das was born to a pious Sarayuparin Brahmin couple Hulsi Devi and Atmaram Dubey 0n a Shravan Shukla Paksha Sapthami  day in the year 1532 (16th Century) in Rajapur which is 200km east of Allahabad,  in Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh.   Its believed that Sri Goswami Tulsidas was an incarnation of Maharishi Valmiki, composer of the great epic ‘ Srimad Ramayanam’.   ‘Sri Ramacharita Manas’ was written by Sant Tulsidas.

As Sri Goswami Tulsidas was born in an inauspicious day of Shravan Shukla Paksha Saptami, there was an old belief existed in those days that the child born on this day would bring unexpected death to it parents.   The parents of Tulsidas were very poor, did not find any means to conduct the ‘Namakaran’/naming ceremony of the child.  Shortly, his mother passed away and his father abandoned the baby due to his irrational beliefs.    The baby boy was brought up by Chuniya, the female servant of Hulsa, till the age of five.  After the death of his foster mother Chuniya, unfortunate Tulsidas continued to wander here and there for food and occasionally taking shelter in a Hanuman Temple.

Tulsidas preceded his divine work of spreading the glories of Lord Rama and inspired people through his Bakthi cult on the holy land of Varanasi.  In the meantime, the thieves arrived  in his hut during the night hours to pilfering the great epic ‘Sri Ramacharita Manas’,  to their utter amazement found two young boys one in blue complexion and another in white, with bows and arrows in their hands were guarding the scriptures.  The thieves were horrified and ran off from the place without accomplishing their task and eventually it was informed to Tulsidas.   Tulsidas shed tears of joy at the compassion of Lord Ram and realized the truth that the guards were none other than Lord Rama and Lakshmana.

There was another incident affirms the devotion of Sant Tulidas, after morning ablutions he used to pour the remaining water at the base of Banyan tree, in that way Tulsidas reduced the pain and agony of the spirit lived in there.  As a mark of gratitude, the spirit enquired about the yearning in his life.   Tulsidas immediately revealed his desire for the Dharshan of Lord Sri Rama.  The spirit informed Tulsidas about an old man who used to visit the place where Tulsidas’ spiritual discourses being held and he was the first to attend his preaching and the last to leave during the soul stirring discourse takes place about the glories of Lord Ram, ultimately Tulsidas identified the old man and fell on his feet.  Who will possibly be the old man other than Lord Anjaneya himself?

Tulsidas arrived in Chitrakoot and spent his remaining life immersed in preaching the glories of Lord Rama as per the instructions of Lord Anjaneya.   He sincerely engaged in the service of Lord and distributing the sandal paste to the devotees.  One day Lord Rama appeared before him and asked for the sandal paste.  At the breathtaking sight of Lord,  Tulsidas attained Samadhi.  The most compassionate Lord applied sandal paste on the forehead of Tulsidas.

Tulsidas married to Ratnavali, a chaste woman and the newly wedded couple settled in Rajapur.  In due course of time Ratnavali conceived with a child.  She gave birth to a stunning boy child and named him Tarak, unfortunately the child was died at early years. Tulsidas was extremely devoted to his wife.   Afterwards the excessive attraction towards his wife became the reason for the transformation of him as a fervent devotee of Lord.  Once, his wife left to her parental home Tulsidas’s extreme obsession towards her persuaded him to rush behind her.  Tulsidas hurried to her during a night hour crossing the river Yamuna.  His wife sharply criticized his passion for lust, it nailed down the fascination and turned into pure devotion to Lord.

Tulsidas sacrificed the materialistic way of life and turned into ascetic.  He gave up his home and his wife, and travelled extensively throughout India and visited many holy shrines that were just the beginning of the birth of his divine nectar like composition ‘Ramacharita Manas’.

Tulsidas once again arrived in the holy land Varansi, shortly at the divine command of Lord he returned to Ayodhya, there he took the initial step for the composition of immortal epic ‘Sri Ramacharita Manas’.  At his arrival, he founded a secluded place of grove under the banyan tree was already prepared for him.  In the year 1575, on an auspicious day of ‘Sri Ramanavami’, the day exactly when Lord Rama’s birth took place in Treta Yuga, Tulsidas begun his marvelous work of composing ‘Sri Ramacharita Manas’.  It took him to complete two years, seven months and 26 days.  Finally, it was completed on   the day of Lord Rama’s celestial marriage with Sita in the month of Margashirsha.

Tulsidas was born to Hulsi and Atmaram Dubey in the year 1947, a Saryupareen Brahmin couple lived in a village called Rajapur/Chitrakuta located on the river banks of Yamuna,  Uttar Pradesh.  After residing in mother’s womb for 12 months Tulsidas was born on the seventh day of bright half of Lunar day/Shravan Shukla Paksha.  Shortly, his mother passed away.  There was a belief existed in those days that the child born on this day would bring bad luck to the family, soon he was abandoned by his father.  Later, he was well taken care by a Chuniya/Muniya, a female servant of Hulsi from Haripur and he was lived with her up to 5 1/2years till her death.  After the demise of his foster mother Rambola/Tulsidas was left alone, he wandered aimlessly begging for food.  In these days Goddess Sri Parvati assumed the form of a Brahmin woman and fed him.

The major turn in the miserable life of the child, Rambola/Tulsidas was when Narharidas, a passionate devotee of Lord Rama and a  Sanskrit scholar had a dream in that Lord Rama commanded him to adopt this abandoned child Rambola and teach him the glories of Lord Rama.   Narharidas conducted meticulous search for the child immediately spotted the Rambola of 3 years who was wandering aimlessly.  He took Tulsiram with him to Ayodhya and performed the naming ceremony of the boy and fondly addressed him Tulsiram, keeping in memory of the significance of Tulsi leaves used for the scared thread ceremony.  In due course Narharidas performed the sacred thread ceremony /Brahmopadhesham for Tulsiram, later came to known as Tulsidas.  They lived in Ayodhya for ten months, during these periods Tulsidas learnt profound knowledge in Vedas and scriptural texts.  Further, they moved to the convergent point of the scared river Sarayu with Ghaghara,    Tulsidas attentively listened to the lectures of Naraharidas about the glories of Lord Rama, it enthused an unfaltering devotion in Tulsidas.

Tulsidas met Shesha Santhana, a scholar and followed him to the sacrosanct place Varanasi, there he learned Sanskrit and attained insightful knowledge in the Sutra of Panini, an ancient Indian Sankrit Grammarian.   Tulsidas had the finest grasping power and gained profound knowledge in Sanskrit and his compositions were the perfect examples for his good command over Sanskrit.
