Chidambaram (Chith+Ambaram = The Sky of Consciousness)/ Mukthisthalam/Pancha Boothasthalam/ Booloka Kailasam/ Thiruperumpuliyur Kshetram is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Chidambaram, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva occupies 40 acres of vast land with exquisite architectural and stunning mural works. It has 4 majestic Rajagopuram embellished with marvelous murals of deities and sages engraved on it. This enormous temple was built during the 11th century by The Kings of Chola Dynasty and it has five wide circumambulatory paths surrounded by stone wall. The Kings of Pallava, Chera and Vijayanagara also have made abundance of contributions to this temple.

These prominent Shivaite Saints popularly known as Samayakkuravarkal – Thirunavukkarasar, Thiru Gnana Sambandhar, Sundarar and Manikkavasagar entered into the temple premise through the 4 different entrances located in West, South, North and East respectively. These entrances are admirably known as the main entrance to the temple Rajagopurams.

Significance




· This is one of the Pancha Bootha Sthalam of Lord Shiva represents Sky. The others are Vayu Lingam – Sri Kalahastheeswara at Kalahasthi, Prthvi Lingam – Sri Ekambaranathar at Kanchipuram, Appu Lingam – Sri Jambukeshwara at Thiruvanaikka and Agni Lingam – Sri Arunachaleswara at Thiruvannamalai.




· This is one of the Pancha Sabha Kshetram of Lord Shiva represent ‘Kanaka Sabha’. The others are Thiruvalangadu – Ratna Sabha, Madurai – Rajatha Sabha, Thirunelveli – Thamra Sabha and Thirukutralam – Chitra Sabha




· There are 5 Sabhas located within the premise of this temple. They are Chit Sabha (Chitrambalam) where Lord Nataraja performed his cosmic dance form of Ananda Thandava – The Dance of Eternal Bliss along with his consort Goddess Sri Sivakami, Kanaka Sabha (Ponnambalam) located just before the Chit Sabha where worship of Spatika Linga and daily rituals are conducted, Raja Sabha also known as Ayiramkal Mandapam where Lord Nataraja gives dharshan during the auspicious days in the month of Ani and Markazhi from this glorious hall situated here and its symbolizes Yogic Chakra – Sahasrararam/Sahasra Chakra the state of divine union with the Shiva Shakthi form of Lord, Deva Sabha also known as (Perambalam) houses Lord Somaskandha, Lord Ganesha, Lord Chandikeshwara, Goddess Shivananda Nayaki and Lord Muruga. Last but not the least Nirthya Sabha is one of the marvelous Hall where the idol Urdha Thadava of Lord Nataraja can be seen. Lord Nataraja and Goddess Parvati performed cosmic dance and Lord Nataraja won over his consort, in this way Lord established his supremacy over Goddess Sri Parvathy.

· This is one of the prominent temples of Goddess Sri Parvati personifies as Iccha Shakthi, Gnana Shakthi and Kriya Shakthi




· Thirumoolanathar/Moolattaneswarar Linga positioned in this outstanding Thirumoolattana Shivasthalam embraces the vibrant energies of All the Lingas after midnight.




· In this temple Lord Shiva can be seen in three forms. Lord Nataraja in his cosmic dance form, Lord Chandramouleeswara as Crystal Linga and Lord in his formless nature where a sequence of 51 golden Vilva (Bael) leaves hanging on an empty space traditionally known as Chidambara Rahasyam. As mentioned earlier Lord Shiva represent the Sky in this temple proves He is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient.




· The structural designs of this temple are one of the most astonishing factors with the resemblance to the human body and its subtleties. This temple located on the center point of world’s magnetic equator. The five walls to the temple represent Annamaya Kosa, Pranamaya Kosa, Manonmaya Kosa, Vignana Maya Kosa and the innermost is Ananda Maya Kosa. The 9 gateways represent the 9 orifices (Nava Dwaras) in human body. The Chit Sabhai, the Sanctum Sanctorum symbolizes heart and the five flights of steps to it represent the ‘Panchakshara Mantra’. The four magnificent pillars which support the Chit Sabha stand for four Vedas such as Rig, Yajur, Sama, Atharva Vedas respectively. The Ponnambalam is supported by 28 pillars represents the 28 methodologies of Shaiva Agama worship. The roof is supported by 64 beams embodies the 64 Art forms. The several cross beams in between them symbolizes innumerable blood vessels in the human body. The roof has been laid by 21,600 golden tiles and each carries the Shivayanamah inscribed on it stands for the breaths and the 72,000 golden nails represents the veins in human body. The 9 Kalasas represents 9 forms of energies. The six pillars of Ardha Mandapa represents 6 Sastras and the hall next to it has 18pillars symbolizes the 18 Puranas.

The legend has that Sage Patanjali and his disciple Sage Vyagrapadha arrived on this sacred land of Tillaivanam and found a self-manifested Linga in a pond full of lotus flowers. They underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord. Lord Shiva was pleased at the devotion of Sages and performed Ananda Thandava (Dance of eternal Bliss) as desired by them. They earnestly prayed to Lord to remain in the blissful dance form on this sacred land and attained liberation.





The Spatika Linga – Lord Chandramouliswara carries major part of the daily rituals. Lord Shiva while performing his blissful dance form Ananda Thandava, the crescent (Lord Chandra) shaped moon fallen on the Earth and turned out a Spatika Linga. The sacred bath to Spatika Linga is performed 6 times a day.

The crescent shaped Lord Chandra on his matted hair locks symbolizes the perfect benevolence and splendor.




The matted hair locks and Goddess Ganga signifies the absolute Energy and perpetuity of life in this Universe.






This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and 5.00 PM to 10.00 PM in the evenings.

Sri Kalahasthi Temple is one of the 'Pancha Bootha Sthalangal ' of Lord Shiva, which represents 'Wind'. This temple is situated in a village known as SriKalahasthi, situated 38 km away from Tirupati.    This is one of the most famous Temples of Lord Shiva considered as 'Dakshin Kailash' in South India situated on the eastern banks of River Swarnamukhi. The vast structural contributions to this temple were made by the Kings of Chola and Vijayanagara Kingdom. Sri Kalahasthi Sathakam written by Durjeti Kavi in Telugu describes the myth of the temple and it speaks about the life of Kannappa Nayanar ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.

 






In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga white in color. This swayambu Linga was remain untouched from the begining, not even by the priests. The shrine of Lord Kalahasthiswara and Gnana Prasunambika situated on the raised platform in the third enclosure. The well known fact is that Lord Shiva is 'Abisheka Priya' ( ceremonial bath), the Abishekam for the Lord is performed in the form of Scented water, Ashes, Honey, Rice, Sandal Paste, Flower, Panchamrutham, Tender coconut water etc.. on the Ustava Murthi. There are sannidhis for Lord Ganesha under the ground, Durgamba temple on the northern part of the hill and Sri Kannapeswsara Temple dedicated to Sage Kannapa Nayanar on the southern part of the hill .

The legend has that, Umanabha the son of Vishwakarma (Celestial Architect) was an excellent sculptor. He started creating replica of the creations of Lord Brahma. This made Lord Brahma agitated and cursed Umanabha to become a Spider. Umanabha turned out a Spider, realized his mistake pleaded Lord Brahma. In order to get relieved out of the curse, Lord Brahma advised Umanabha to worship Lord Shiva at Dakshin Kalish. The spider became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and started to decorate the temple roofs with its beautiful webs. In order to test the devotion of the spider, Lord Shiva set out fire on the webs from a lamp. The bewildered spider attacked the lamp and cried out the help of the Lord. The compassionate Lord Shiva appeared before the spider and offered 'Salvation'.


 


In Tretayuga a serpent made delay on its way back from netherlands to adorn Lord Shiva's neck, thus it came down to earth at His curse. So as to get rid of the curse, the serpent began worshipping Lord Shiva at Dakshin Kailash with Gem. In Dwapara Yuga, an elephant also engaged in worshipping Lord here, with the aim of get rid of the curse. The serpent continued to worship Lord with the Gem. The elephant remove the Gems and worship Lord with Bilva leaves. This practice continued for several days. At last they confronted each other and ended up in a big fight. Finally, the serpent and elephant got killed each other. At the devotion of the serpent and elephant, Lord Shiva out of mercy granted them liberation. The name of the temple 'Sri Kalahasthiswara' commemorates the incidents took place here. 'Sri' stands for 'Spider', 'Kala' stands for 'The Serpent' and the Hasti stands for ' Elephant' respectively.



This temple remains open from 5.00 AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 9.00PM in the evenings.

Thiruvannamalai is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva also known as Mukthisthal, situated 180km away from Chennai and 80km from Katpadi. Lord Arunachaleshwara symbolizes in the form of a huge fire in the hills of Thiruvannamalai. This is one of the ‘Thevara Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam’. The ‘Nalvar’ – Appar, Sundarar, Manickavasagar and Thiru Gnana Sambadhar sung praising the glories of Lord Arunachaleshwara in their great lyrical works known as Thevaram and Thiruvasakam. This is one of the ‘Mukthistal’ is capable to provide ‘Salvation’ from the cycles of birth and death.

Karthikai Deepam is one of the spectacular events in the Tamil month Karthikai. A huge fire is lit on the hill top of Thiru Annamalai witnessed by massive crowd.

 

Girivalam is performed on all Pournami days and Karthikai Deepam Day. Girivalam (Giri – Mountain, Valam – go round) is a marvelous practice of walking nearly 13 kms through the rough path ways at the bottom of the hill, the place where Yogis and Siddhars lived. It brings a harmonious relationship between mind, body and soul. It is believed that whoever circumambulates the hill and Lord Arunachaleshwara (Girivalam/Giripradakshina) during the full moon days and Thiru Annamalai Deepam day treated as one of the most propitious act in order to acquire the perpetual positive vibes in them.

 

This is one of the oldest temples built by the Kings of Chola and Pandya dynasties during the period of 750 A.D. The 217 ft. height of magnificent Rajagopuram situated on the east side was built by the King Krishnadevarayar in 15th century. King of Hoysalas was also made abundance of contributions to the temple in the form of Praharams and Sannidhis. This temple is situated on the massive land of 25 acres consists of seven Praharams and nine Gopurams. Out of seven Praharams the first two of them were erected by the Kings of Pandya and the remaining was built by the Kings of Chola and others. The splendid thousand pillared hall is one of the major attractions of this temple with a basement chamber enshrines Pathala Lingam. During Ani – Thiruvathirai (Star) Thirumanjanam, the sacred bath for the Lord is performed here.

 

The sixth Praharam is the outer wall consists of majestic Rajagopuram built by King Krishnadevarayar, Thirumanjana Gopuram, Pei Gopuram and Ammani Ammal Gopuram.




 


The Presiding deity of this temple Lord Shiva – Annamalayar/ Arunachaleshwarar worshipped in the form of a Lingam with his consort Goddess Parvati – Apithakuchalambal. This is one of the most promising places where saints and holy men were lived in this hill and worshipped Lord Shiva. This holy hill has long been associated with the Yogis and Siddhars like Sri Arunagirinathar, Sri Sheshadri Swamigal and Ramsurat Kumar etc.. During 20th century Sri Ramana Maharshi – who lived in this Mount Arunachala made this holy place as one of the ultimate spiritual destination. Sri Ramana Maharshi lived here for fifty three years and attained ‘Samadhi’ in the year 1950.



This temple is closely associated with many mythologies. Shiva Puranam describes the disagreement between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. At the divine command of Lord Shiva to prove the superiority among the two deities, they set off in search for the beginning and end of a huge Phallaum appeared before them. Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and continued his search in the Sky and Lord Vishnu took the form of a boar and plunged into Earth. They continued their search for several years. Finally, Lord Brahma took the false witness of ‘Thamzham Poo’ that was falling from the crown of the Phallum and Lord Vishnu returned with true statement. Lord Shiva disliked the false statement of Lord Brahma and cursed him. Lord Shiva transformed himself into a huge fire and appeared in the hills of Thiruvannamalai. Soon after at the request of Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Lingam at the foot hills.

 

In this temple, Lord Muruga saved the life of his zealous devotee Saint Arunagirinathar while he was trying to commit suicide jumping from the Vallala Maharaja Gopuram. After that with the blessings of Lord Muruga, Saint Arunagirinathar became a renowned Tamil poet who composed and sung praising the glories of Lord in his sacred hymns ‘Thirupukazh’.

Thirukatchiyekambam is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva situated in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. This is one of the oldest temples built by the Kings of Pallava and Chola Dynasty, Emperor of Vijayanagara Sri Krishna Devaraya also have made abundance of contributions to this temple. The majestic Rajagopuram of the temple with the height of 172ft built in the year 1509 and the 540 pillared halls in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple was also built by Sri Krishna Devaraya. It is one of the Pancha Bootha Sthalam of Lord Shiva represents the Earth. The presiding deity Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Prithvi Linga. There is a Somaskanda panel featuring Lord Shiva, Parvati and Skanda in the main shrine and 1008 Shivalingas in a row are the stunning revelation of craftsmanship.





Presiding Diety - Sri Ekambareswarar/Ekambaranathar, one of the Panchabootha Sthal of Lord Shiva represents Earth also known as Prithvi Linga Kshetram.

The legend has that while Lord Shiva engrossed in meditation Goddess Parvathi mischievously covered his eyes which resulted the entire Universe doomed into darkness. The most infuriated Lord cursed Goddess Parvati to be born on Earth. Goddess Parvati took birth on earth and underwent severe penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. She continued her severe austerities, she formed a Linga out of sand and immersed in meditation under the Mango Tree in this place. The neighboring River Vegavathi threatened to engulf the Linga, Goddess Parvati embraced the Linga in order to protect from its danger. Lord Shiva was profoundly convinced by Goddess Parvati’s truthful gesture and married her.
