Significance –
 
Lord Rama was afflicted with the sin of Brahmahathya, after the fierce battle between Ravana.  In order to get rid of the sin, Lord Rama performed various Yagnas, ultimately arrived on this sacred land at the instruction of Sage Vashishta and consecrated a Linga /Rameshwara Linga and underwent severe austerities.
 
 
It’s the sacred shrine where the Pradosha Puja was initiated for the first time.
 
 
 
The legend has the demons and deities were churning the milky ocean for the elixir of nectar, using Mount Mandhara as the center point and the King of serpent Vasuki as its rope, at one point of time Vasuki spewed the venomous poison due to the immense pressure applied on it.  The deities and demons appealed to Lord Shiva to protect the Universe from the massive disaster.  Lord Shiva gracefully swallowed the poison, eventually laid down keeping his head on the lap of Goddess Sri Parvati to get rid of the adverse effects of the poison consumed.  Goddess Sri Parvati gently pressed his throat to remain the deadly poison on the throat, without letting it enter into the abdomen of the Lord.  Hence, Lord Shiva has attained the sacred name Neelakanda.  This is the sacred land on Earth where Lord Shiva laid down after consuming the venomous poison, all the deities and Rishis and Sages arrived on this sacred land and eulogized the glories of Lord Shiva.

Sri Gangeshwar Temple is one of the Abhimana Kshethram located in the village of Fudam, Diu, Gujarat.  There are five Lingas positioned in the midst of rocks on the shores of Arabian Sea, stands majestically in a serene atmosphere which is consecrated and worshipped by the Pancha Pandavas during their exile from Hasthinapur and these five Lingas are situated in such a way that it is enabling for the tidal waves to constantly washes the Linga.

Sri Brahmapureeswarar Temple at Thenambakkam is one of the Abhimana Kshethram of Lord Shiva at Thirupattur, Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.  In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.  This is one of the prominent temples of Lord Shiva famous for its stunning architectural and craftsmanship.
 
Presiding deity – Thiru Brahmapureeswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Brahmasampath Gouri/Brahmanayaki

Worshipped by -  Lord Brahma, Sage Pathanjali , Paramacharya of Kanchi
Lord Brahma attained the boon of creation from Lord Shiva; this incident made Lord Brahma became proud of his superiority over Lord Shiva.  Soon, Lord Brahma was afflicted with the curse of Lord Shiva and lost one of his heads.  In order to get rid of the curse, Lord Brahma visited many sacred shrines of Lord Shiva and arrived at Thiruppedhavur/Thenambakkam and created a pond/Brahma Theertham, underwent severe austerities and consecrated Dwadasha Lingas and worshipped Lord Shiva.  Lord was pleased at the devotion and dedication of Lord Brahma.    Thus, Lord Brahma got rid of the curse and regained the function of creation once again.
 
Significance – Sage Pathanjali attained Jeevasamadhi in this sacred shrine

Sri Maha Ganapathi Temple  at Ganapathi Agraharam is one of the Abhimana Kshethram of Lord Ganesha located in Papanasam Taulk, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

The legend has that Sage Gauthama was preceded to various sacred shrines after his wife Ahalya was turned into rock due to the curse.  During his journey, Sage Gauthama arrived on this sacred land and found the people of this village was suffering from severe famine.  Sage Gauthama perceived the reason for the severe drought, instructed the people of the village to conduct an excavation process, eventually found the idol of Lord Ganesha which was consecrated by Sage Agastya was buried under the Earth. Shortly, the idol of Lord Ganesha was sanctified by Sage Gauthama, before long Lord Varuna showered his grace with copious rainfall in this area.

Padmapuram/Thiruvottiyur Sri Kalyana Varadaraja Peruma is one of the Abhimana Kshetram located in Kaladipet, Thiruvottiyur, Chennai.  This is one of the oldest temples built in 18th century A.D.  The idol of the presiding deity in this temple is the replica of Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple at Kanchipuram, one of the 108 Divya Desam of Lord Vishnu.

Sri Ekambareshwarar temple is one of the Abhimana Kshetram of Lord Shiva located in Sowcarpet, Mint St (Park town), Chennai.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva existing for more than 1000 years.  In this temple Lord Ekambareshwara worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.  It is believed that the worship of Sri Ekambareshwarar Temple at Sowcarpet would bring pieties equivalent to the visit to one of the Pancha Bhootha Kshetram of Lord Ekambareshwara which represents the element Earth at Kanchipuram.

Vadanallar/Pozhichallur is one of the Abhimana Kshetram of Lord Shiva famous for Lord Saturn located at a distance of 2km from the Pallavaram Railway Station, Chennai.  It is one of the ancient temples existing from the period of Chola regime. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

The legend has that Lord Saturn creates severe impacts upon the life of devotees during the changes in planetary positions, thus the devotees has to undergo extreme hardships during those periods.  Therefore, Lord Saturn was afflicted with the sin; in order to get rid of the sin Lord Saturn underwent severe penance and worshiped Lord Shiva.  At the divine instruction of Lord Shiva,  Saturn arrived on this sacred land of Pozhichallur, created a holy pond ‘Nallar Shani Theertham’ and worshipped Lord Agastheeswara in this temple and eventually got rid of the sins.
