Life of Sri Maruthanallur Sadguru Swamigal !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

The trinities of Dakshina Bajan Sampradaya Sri Bodhendra Swamigal, Sri Sridhara Ayyavargal and Maruthanallur Sri Sagduru Swamigal publicized that Nama Sankeerthana is the simplest form of worship of Lord,  attain salvation in this Kaliyuga.  Sri Sadguru Swamigal/Venkataraman was born in the year 1777 in a Telegu Brahmin family in Thiruvisainallur.  His father had great interests and profound knowledge in sacred scriptures and Veda Sastra.  Venkataraman learned Veda Sastras under the guidance of his father; he also had the opportunity to learn the sacred scriptures and life of holy men and saints, especially the great epic Srimad Ramayana.  He cultivated the habit of chanting Rama Nama, immersed in the nectar like Rama Kavya, treated himself as Lord Rama.   He continued to live in Thiruvisainallur, the places of holy men and saints.

Venkataraman followed the path of his father; he had chosen performance of Vedic rituals and Shraddha as livelihood.  Once, he had to perform a Shraddha ritual in a house nearby village.  He started chanting Rama Nama in the early morning hours and it took him long hours to complete in the evening.  Instantly he remembered the Shraddha ceremony he was agreed to perform.  He was alarmed, hurried to the house in order to beg for forgiveness.  Surprisingly, the man in that house greeted him with utmost reverence and thanked him for his dedicated performance of the shraddha rituals.  In a moment, Venkataraman was in a state of ecstasy, he reverently remembered the compassion of Lord.

Years passed by, Venkataraman was married to a pious woman Janaki.  After the sad demise of his father, Venkataraman took the responsibility of taking care of the family; he journeyed to nearby villages to teach the children Veda, his disciples were brilliant and it helped him to earn more and more students.  Shortly, Venkataraman found it difficult to allocate time for Rama Nama Japam, so he discarded the family life and left to Ayodhya.  He immersed in chanting Rama Nama Japam and engaged in Uncchavruthi, eventually he reached Andhra Pradhesh.  There he found mass of people travelling to Thirupathi singing Rama Nama and dancing to the tunes in a state of bliss.  The very moment he had decided to bring awareness and Bakthi cult among the people of Tamil Nadu, he decided to incorporate the compositions/Sambradaya of great saints and holy men of North and the compositions / Keerthana of saints of South.    On that night Sri Bodhendra Swamigal appeared in his dream, advised him that he has realized the purpose of his life and he need not go back to Ayodhya.   Further, Bodhendra Swamigal instructed him to return to Thiruvisanallur to spread Nama Bhakthi.  Venkataraman sincerely followed the instructions of his Acharya and returned to Maruthanallur.  He constructed a spectacular form of Dakshina Bajan Sambradaya, incorporating the stunning compositions of Sri Jayadevar’s Ashtapadi, compositions of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal, Sri Sridhara Ayyaval, Badrachala Ramadasar, Thyagarajar, Purandaradasar, Tukaram etc…  A mutt was established in Maruthanallur and Dakshina Bajana Sambradaya was taught to the people at large.   Gradually he was known by Maruthanallur Sri Sadguru Swamigal.

Maruthanallur Sri Sadguru Swamigal visited to Govindapuram to worship the Samadhi Sthal of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal.  He was unable to locate the Samadhi Sthal, he was disconsolate remained fast for nine days, without moving a bit immersed in chanting the Rama Nama.  On the tenth day, he regained conscious and hurried to the banks of river Cauvery.  There he kept his ears on the ground as if listening to something, he continued the search and eventually he heard the loud majestic voice of his Acharyals Rama Nama Japam.  Maruthanallur Sri Saduguru Swamigal approached the ruler of Tanjore (Sarfoji) and magnificent Samadhi Sthal was constructed in its place.  On the previous night the King had a dream in that Lord Anjaneya informed that Lord Rama was on his way to meet him.  King Sarfoji fallen at the feet of Maruthanallur Sri Sadguru Swamigal and attained blessings.

Maruthanallur Sri Saguru Swamigal performed many mysterious events those were truly mesmerizing.  Once, a person Balakalochan was sarcastic at Swamigal while Swamigal was attending Uncchavruthi.  Soon Balakalochan was afflicted with excruciating stomach ache, before long his wife begged for forgiveness to Swamigal.  The compassionate Swamigal gave the holy water from his vessel.  After consuming the holy water Balalochan got rid of the stomach ache and became the disciple of Maruthanallur Sri Sadguru Swamigal.  Balakalochan composed marvelous verses’ praising his Acharya ‘Athade Parabramam’ stands as Guru Vandanam in Dakshina Bajana Sambradaya.

Maruthanallur Sri Swamigal devoted all his for forty years of life in spreading the Bakthi cult through the soul stirring Nama Sankeerthana, attained Samadhi at the age of forty.   Swamigal shaped a unique form of Bajana Sampradaya, incorporating the compositions of various saints and holy men of different states and adding mesmerizing effects with the various musical instruments of divinity into it.  In this way, he introduced an exceptional form of worship of Lord and created an enormous awareness amongst the public.  Maruthanallur Sri Sadguru Swamigal marvelously shaped the Dakshina Bajan Sampradaya for the occasions of performance of Radha Kalyanam, Sita Kalyanam, Rukmini Kalyanam etc…  and in a short span of time it became widely celebrated among the people.

It was an Amavasya in the month Karthik/Aippasi, Sri Ayyaval had to perform Sraddha ceremony to his ancestors.  Sri Ayyaval hurried to river Cauvery to have morning oblations.  On his way, met an outcasted fellow (Chandala) dying of hunger, Sri Ayyaval was deepily moved at that sight, he could not withastand the sufferings of the fellow.  Sri Ayyaval rushed back to his home, brought the food which was prepared for the Sraddha ceremony and served the hungry man passionately.  Sri Ayyaval returned home and cleaned the entire place and began to cook once again for the Sraddha ceremony.  The priests were duly invited by Sri Ayyaval.  Unfortunately, the invited priests were jealous and envious of Sri Ayyaval. They were already sensed the situation and the resons for the delay in performance of Sraddha ceremony.   They found it was the right time to disgrace Sri Ayyaval.  A huge argument broken out between the priests critizing Sri Ayyaval for serving a Chandala with the food prepared for Sraddha ceremony.  Sri Ayyaval earnestly prayed to the priests that serving a person dying of hunger is not against Dharma Sastra and it is not mentioned as wrong action in any of the scriptures.  Finally, the priests refused to perform Sraddha ceremony and walked out of the home proclaiming Sri Ayyaval as an outcasted one.  Sri Ayyaval with great grief and hurt started to perform the Sraddha ceremony chanting Vedic hymns.  The covetous neighbors and villagers sneaked through the window and found three Brahmins were seated on the Sraddha ceremony.  The villagers could not believe their eyes, the three Brahmins were none other than Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva blissfully partaking the food cooked by Sri Ayyaval.

Though the Sraddha ceremonies were carried out with heartfelt content, Sri Ayyaval had to face to sharp criticism and punishments from the villagers.  The villagers commanded Sri Ayyaval to take a holy dip in river Ganga to erase his sin; otherwise Sri Ayyaval would be treated as out of the place and not counted as one amongst them.  Sri Ayyaval vulnerably exposed his helpless situation to travel to north with his deteriorating health.  The crowds gathered before his house sharply condemn the verses mentioned in scriptures that if one take dip in any water calling out the name of scared river Ganga; he would attain the merit of holy dip in Ganga.  Finally, Sri Ayyaval could not tolerate the sheer criticism of scriptures anymore.  Sri Ayyaval pronounced that mere chanting the scared Nama of the holy river would bless with her presence.  Sri Ayyaval composed eight scared verses of ‘Gangashtakam’ out of absolute passion.  As everyone watching with utter surprise, the sacred river Ganga gushes out from the well on the courtyard of Sri Ayyaval’s house.  The crowd gathered was horrified at this sight, the entire place was flooded.  Sri Ayyaval out of compassion instructed the crowd to take holy dip in the water.  Seeing the horror-struck faces around, Sri Ayyaval prayed river Ganga to subside in the well on the backyard forever.  The holy rivers Gange abide by the prayers of Sri Ayyaval.  Every year, on the New Moon Day in the month of Karthik Ganga Snanotsavam at Thiruvisanallur is celebrated in a grand manner to commememorates this above incident and large numbers of devotees rush to attend this festival and take holy dip on the well water.

Sri Sridhara Venkatesa Ayyaval was spent his whole life in spreading the essence of Nama Bhakthi.  He travelled extensively through the sacred lands and inspired people with the Bakthi cult.  One day, Sri Ayyaval arrived at the temple of Lord Shiva.  On that day, Sri Ayyaval’s face was unusually radiant than ever.  Sri Ayyaval spent long hours standing in the sanctum sanctorum praising the glories of Lord.  At one point of time, Sri Ayyaval with an unbearable shooting pain of separation from the Lord, with tears dashing through the eyes, rushed to the presiding deity.  While the priest was tried hard to stop him, it ended in vain.  Sri Ayyaval ran to Linga and disappeared instantly, a sparkling light of resemblance to Lord Surya on the Linga was visible to the devotees who were witnessing the happening with tears on their eyes.

Sri Ayyaval used to visit Sri Mahalinga Temple situated in the neighboring city Madhyarjuna.   He made it regular practice to visit this temple of Lord Shiva in the early morning hours, in order to avoid any crowd.   To reach the temple he had to cross River Cauvery.  Once, Sri Ayyaval reached at the banks of the river and found that it was over flowing and there was no boatmen were visible on the sight.  It was unbearable for Sri Ayyaval to think of returning home without paying obeisance to Lord Mahalinga.  But, there was no other option available at that moment.  He watched the majestic tower of the temple longingly with tears teeming on his eyes.  He could not bear the pain, gazing at the temple tower thought that he must have committed sin which made him to repudiate the worship of Lord.   He sang loudly out of grief and pain of separation of Lord, ‘Arthihara Stothra’ praising the glory of Lord Shiva.  Immediately, there found the temple priest with a handful of holy ashes.  The temple priest moved to Sri Ayyaval and handed him with the holy ashes, as he was realized the pain and sorrow of Sri Ayyaval and his helplessness to cross the river to attend the temple.  Sri Ayyaval with great fervor and devotion prostrated before the priest and received the holy ashes.

While returning home, Sri Ayyaval’ mind were filled with different thoughts.  He was trying to recollect the incident over and over.  The river was overflowing but the temple priest was not drenched and his holy ash marks on his body was not stained a little bit to his surprise.  How it would be possible for a person to cross a brimming river without getting wet?  In the whole night Sri Ayyaval was restless.  The next morning he found the river was calm as ever and hurried to the temple.   The first thing he wanted to do was to thank the temple priest.  Sri Ayyaval hurried to the sanctum sanctorum and met the temple priest; he thanked him wholeheartedly for the yesterday’s happening and his kindheartedness to approach Sri Ayyaval with holy ashes.  But, the temple priest was flabbergasted at the kind words of Sri Ayyaval and described his plight of situation to cross an over flooding river.  Deepily moved by the words of the priest, Sri Ayyaval realized that the most compassionate Lord himself disguised as a temple priest and appeared before him with the holy ashes.  Sri Ayyaval in a state of ecstasy with vivid authenticity sang the glory of Lord Shiva in a few sacred hymns ‘Daya Shatakam’.

Sri Ayyaval continued his search for a place of solitude and arrived at Thiruvisanallur, a small village near the river banks of Cauvery.   He found the place was truly mesmerizing with the presence of legends of Bhagavan Nama Sri Bodhendra Swamigal and Sri Sadasiva Brahmendral. Sri Sridhara Ayyaval was closely connected with Sri Bodhendra Swamigal.  They two often engaged in spiritual discussions together with Sri Sadasiva Brahmendral.  Sri Sridhara Ayyaval was intensely soaked in the Bhakthi to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva and saw no difference in the devotion to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Sri Ayyaval composed many scriptures praising the glories of Lord.  Some of them are Bhagavan Nama Bhushanam, Akhya Shashti, Daya Shatakam, Sthuthi Paddhathi, Shiva Bhakthi Kalpalatha, Shiva Bhaktha Lakshanam, Achyutashtakam and Dola Navaratna Malika etc…

Sri Ayyaval gained lot respect and admirers with his devotion to Lord, though some were jealous at him.  Once, the villagers and prominent people were decided to celebrate Janmashtami festival in a grand manner.  They have given least consideration or respect to Sri Ayyaval to inform about the grand festival or discuss about the same as he was a widely known for his devotion to Lord Shiva.   On the day of Janmashtami, the procession of the deity were carried out through the streets reached in front of Sri Ayyaval’s residence, the priests gathered were refused to accept any offerings to Lord from Sri Ayyaval.  They humiliated him and poured harsh words questioning his devotion to Lord Krishna.  Sri Ayyaval was deeply hurt and returned home.  The procession continued to move on, Sri Ayyaval with intense pain sung praising the glory of Lord Krishna.  In a second, the devotees and priests gathered were noticed that the procession deity, the idol of Lord was missing.  The crowd gathered could listen to the petite voice of Sri Ayyaval singing praising the Lord - ‘Dola Navaratna Malika’.   They rushed to Sri Ayyaval and found that Sri Ayyaval was preparing Little Krishna to sleep on a cradle.  The priest and scholars were flabbergasted and fallen at the feet of Sri Ayyaval for their ignorance.  Later, the entire crowd spent that night singing and chanting the glories of Lord Krishna with Sri Ayyaval.  This incident clearly proved the unparalleled devotion of Sri Ayyaval to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Sri Sridhara Ayyaval continued his journey through the scared lands and arrived at Thiruchirapalli. He inspired people with his Bhakthi towards Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva as well.  During those periods Vaishnavism was at its peak in Thiruchirapalli.   The King of Thiruchirapalli was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu.  The people of Trichy raised an opinion against Sri Sridhara Ayyaval in his devotion to Lord and motivated the King to scrutinize his Bhakthi.   As ordered by the King, the presiding deity Sri Mathrubhutheshwara was clad as Lord Krishna and taken out for village procession in order to test the reaction of Sri Ayyaval.  While Sri Ayyaval was meditation as soon as the procession of the deity arrived in front of Sri Ayyaval’s house, he ran out with huge cries and lot of devotion praying to Lord.  He recited the sacred verses about Lord ‘Krishna Dwnadasha Manjari’ praising the glory of Lord Krishna.   The people who accused were fallen at his feet and forgiven for their ignorance.   This incident doubled the respect and admirers of Sri Ayyaval.  The King and the people were delighted to have a great Saint Sri Ayyaval amongst them.    Later, in one of the occasions the King of Thiruchirapalli revealed his desire to have Sri Ayyaval’s permanent presence in his Kingdom, but Sri Ayyaval was already made up his mind to leave Thiruchirapalli to continue his self-less mission of spreading Nama Bhakthi.  The King and the people in his Kingdom were grief-stricken; they were irrepressible due to the separation of a great Saint Sri Ayyaval.  On that night, the King had a dream in that Sri Ayyaval consoling him that he was incarnated on this Earth with the very aim to spread Nama Bhakthi and the King was felt truly blessed and grateful for the blissful times he had spend with Sri Ayyaval.

Sri Sridhara Ayyaval continued his journey through the villages, he arrived at Tanjore.  On his journey, his aged mother attained the Abode of Lord. He lived in Tanjore for quite sometime. The King Shahaji - King of Tanjore was closely associated with Sri Sridhara Ayyaval.  Sri Ayyaval had huge admirers and was well respected by the people of Tanjore.  King of Tanjore – King Shahaji had lot of devotion and respect towards Sri Ayyaval.  At times, Sri Ayyaval assisted the King Shahaji with his valuable suggestions.  The closeness between them forced Sri Ayyaval to accept the position of Dewan (Dean) in the court of King Shahaji for quite sometime.  As the years passes by, Sri Ayyaval inclinations towards his position started to fade away.  The inner craving towards the devotion to Lord and Bakthi cult created an aversion towards material life. Hence Sri Ayyaval quitted his position as Dewan (Dean) of King of Tanjore.

Sri Bodhendra Swamigal arrived at the sacred river bank of Cauvery.  There he found some children were engrossed in sands play.  They were playing hide and seek with the sands, covered half of their legs deep into the sand.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal moved towards the kids and inquisitively enquired them to allow him to be a part in their game.   It added the enthusiasm children.  As an initial step of the game, Sri Bodhendra Swamigal passionately asked the children to dig a place on the sands ground which could accommodate him.  He promised the children that he would be back again once the game is over.  The children followed the instructions of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal eagerly.  Once the process of digging the pit was over, Sri Bodhendra Swamigal occupied the pit giving further instruction to the children that he would be back in no time.  He instructed the children to cover the pit with full of sands.  The children sincerely followed the instructions without taking it seriously into heart; after all it was a part of the game for Sri Bodhendra Swamigal.

On the next day, the entire villagers and Mutt started searching for Sri Bodhendra Swamigal who was found missing from yesterday.  They arrived on the banks of river Cauvery and realized from the children that he was buried under the ground alive.  It was alarming news for the villagers; they anxiously continued the search for Sri Bodhendra Swamigal.  While the search was going on, they heard an unseen voice advised to put an end to their search and declared that Sri Bodhendra Swamigal attained ‘Samadhi’.

After attaining 100 years of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal’s Samadhi, the search for his Samadhisthal continued to build a Samdhisthal for HimHi.  While the meticulous search was carried out by Sri Maruthanallur Sadguru Swamigal who treated Sri Bodhendra Swamigal as his Manasika Guru found the Samdhisthal in Govindapuram, there he could listen the continuous chanting of Rama Nama.  Sri Maruthanallur Sadguru Swamigal initiated the divine work of constructing the Adisthana Mandapam for His Manasika Guru with the help of the King who was ruling Tanjore.

During the regime of Nawab in Arcot, the entire state was affected with the epidemic - ‘Plague’.   At the time of outbreak of Plague Sri Bodhendra Swamigal was in Arcot.  Many lost their lives includes infants and elderly people.  At this heart breaking incident Sri Bodhendra Swamigal advised the residents to organize a mass prayer chanting Rama Nama that could only save them at this terrible moment.  The residents followed the instructions of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal the end result was everyone got recovered from this contagious disease without leaving any trace of it.  Nawab of Arcot was most pleased at the turn of events.  Later, he became one of the ardent followers of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal.  It is believed that Nawab of Arcot offered some piece of land to Mutt as a mark of gratitude to Sri Bodhendra Swamigal’s noble service.

Sri Bodhendra Swamigal continued his mission of spreading the Bakthi cult.  He arrived in a village called Thirugokarnam.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal was engaged in spreading  Nama Bakthi to the group of people were assembled over there.  One ‘Dasi’  (There was a practice in olden days that the girls of tender age are offered to nearby temples, to take care of temple routine and cleaning jobs. They are restricted to live within the temple premises, entertaining the visitors of the temple.  They were totally unaware of the life out of the temple premises and were treated as outclassed)  woman came forward to Sri Bodhendra Swamigal seeking permission to join in their group for chanting Rama Nama.  Without any hesitation Sri Bodhendra Swamigal introduced her ‘Nama Bakthi’ and the significance of the same.  In those days, Saintly people were not allowed to see or speak to women.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal did not bother about the sect, he treated everyone as equal and he believed that everyone has the right to worship Lord.  This incident created an ill feeling against Sri Bodhendra Swamigal by the villagers.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal did not worry about the sharp criticism of the people of the village.  Immediately after completing his mission of spreading Nama Bakthi Sri Bodhendra Swamigal left the village.

The Dasi woman continued to chant Rama Nama sincerely as instructed by Sri Bodhendra Swamigal.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal happened to be in the same village (Thirgokarnam) once again.  He realized that the Dasi woman had crossed chanting of several crores of Rama Nama during the period of his absence.  She came to know about the arrival of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal, she prostrated before Acharya and attained Samadhi.  Seeing this miraculous event, the villagers felt ashamed of their narrow mindedness. They prostrated before Sri Bodhendra Swamigal and begged for forgiveness.

While Sri Bodhendra Swamigal was on his mission in spreading Nama Bhakthi he had the opportunity to be with Sri Sridhara Ayya Avargal of Thiruvisanallur.  They together visited the villages and initiated the work assigned to them.  They successfully continued their mission in spreading the significance and glories of Rama Nama and make the people aware of the importance of chanting the Rama Nama as need in hour, in this Kali era.

During the glorious mission of spreading Nama Bhakthi, Sri Bodhendra Swamigal happened to visit a village called Perambur.  There was a  pious couple requested Sri Bodhendra Swamigal to pay a visit to their house and they made all the arrangements to receive their Acharya.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal arrived at the house to receive Bhiksha (alms).  The couple received Sri Bodhendra Swamigal with utmost respect and reverence.  The couple had a son, who was dumb by birth.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal watched the couple and the child closely with lot of affection.  While leaving, the couple prostrated before Acharya with their one and only son.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal’s eyes filled with tears at the distressed state of the boy.  The couple noticed the change in Sri Bodhendra Swamigal’s face.  They consoled themselves saying that it is their fate to have a son with dumbness and they are well accustomed with the situation.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal disclosed his worries to the couple that He did not worry about the dumbness of the child; instead he worried about how unfortunate the child was not in a position to chant the glorious names of the Lord.  Moreover, the thought of without in a position to chant or listen any Nama of the Lord how the child is going to attain the Salvation, these were made him to worry about.  The couple answered humbly that, their one and only son would definitely attain Moksha with the blessings of their Acharya.  The couple firmly believed that with the Grace of Acharya everything happens in right way. In due course of time, with the blessings of Sri Bodhendra Swamigal, the child slowly started picking up the words and started chanting Rama Nama though it was unclear.  The child sincerely wished to be with Sri Bodhendra Swamigal and serve Him in all his life.  It was the time arrived Sri Bodhendra Swamigal had to leave the village to continue his mission further.  It was unbearable news for the child to take it up.  Seeing the painful state of the boy, Sri Bodhendra Swamigal affectionately handed him with his Sri Padukas (foot wear made with special wood for saintly people) and left.

Sri Bodhendra Swamigal was handed with the book ‘ Bhagavan Nama Koumudhi’ on Bhagavan Nama Grantham  by Sri Jagannath Pandit on the same night.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal completed reading the book sitting awake in the whole night on a small light of the lamp (a type of lamp – earthen lamp used in olden days).  On the next day, Sri Bodhendra Swamigal met Jagannath Pandit to discuss elaborately on the Name Sidhantha Grantha,  He also met South Indian couple to reassure them that what was mentioned on the previous night by Jagannath Pandit were absolutely true verdict of Sastras.

The South Indian couple felt extremely happy at the outcome after a long struggle.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal prophesied that the couple should have a holy dip in the temple tank chanting Rama Nama   before they start living together as husband and wife, by doing this it would bring her back in her original form.  The entire village was gathered around the temple tank; many of the villagers were disbelieved and treated his prophesies as a mockery.  The entire crowd was impatiently waiting for the result.  The lady in her muslim clad prostrated before Sri Bodhendra Swamigal and proceed towards the temple tank.  The husband and wife had their holy dip chanting Rama Nama.  Alas ! To everyone’s amazement the lady came out the way exactly she was before.  She had jasmine flowers on her hair, Kumkum on her forehead; Turmeric powders all over her face and body, she had all the jewels and traditional attire of a South Indian married woman.  It was a brilliant sight indeed; the people gathered were astounded by this stunning scene.  The couple gracefully walked towards Sri Bodhendra Swamigal seeking His blessings.  The entire crowd was thrilled and followed chanting  Rama Nama.

Sri Bodhendra Swamigal while  waiting on the porch of Jagannath Pandit's house, he was slowly absorbed into deep meditation.  Soon after a South Indian couple comes into sight. They were in a miserable and confused state; Sri Bodhendra Swamigal could very well sense the seriousness of the situation.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal watched the couple silently.  They knocked the door in urgency, the door was opened and there appeared Sri Jagannath Pandit.  The couple fallen at the feet of Him, weeping and speaking incoherently.

The South Indian couple described their wretched plight of situation to Jagannath Pandit.  The couple started their journey to Kashi from their hometown.  On the way, they stopped in a village to wave off their weariness and hunger.  When the husband got up early in the morning, he found his wife was missing.  It was distressing news for him and he continued to search for his wife.  He reported to the villagers, they responded quickly that it might be the spiteful Mlechas who had taken away his wife.  He was totally shaken at the news, but did not want to put an end to Kashi Yatra as decided by them earlier.  With a heavy heart he fruitfully completed the Kashi Yatra and performance of rituals for his forefathers etc…While returning from Kashi, he stayed in the same village where his wife was abducted by the Mlechas.  In the night, while he was performing ablations on the river bank; he could see a woman in a Muslim clad running towards him breathlessly.  The husband realized her immediately that it was his wife who came running to save herself from the hands of Mlechas.  She begged her husband to take her with him and promised that she will explain what had happened to her in detail.  They arrived in a safer place in the mid of forest and she explained her pathetic story of how she was ill treated by them.  She added ‘Would you accept me not as your wife once again, at least as your maid?’  Seeing her piteous state the husband replied ‘If Dharma Sastra allow such a noble thing to happen, I will definitely follow the same.’  The couple arrived at Jagannath Pandit’s home seeking valuable advice on this subject.  They poured their heart breaking story to Pandit Jagannath.  After listening to them carefully, Pandit Jagannath advised the couple to chant ‘Ram, Ram, Ram’ three times as a clarification for all their queries and advised them to live together as husband and wife once again. At this point of time, Jagannath Pandit’s aged mother – a widower peeped through the door and instructed her son that if it was his father they had come to seek advice, he would have advised them to chant the glorious Rama Nama only once.  She yelled at her son for not understanding the power of ‘Rama Nama’ diminishing the glory of the same by advising the couple to chant it for three times. She added that even the biggest sinner need to chant the glorious Rama Nama for once to eradicate all the sins he has committed in his life.

Sri Bodhendra Swamigal listened to the whole conversation and stood upright at the words of Jagannath Pandit remembering the book; his father was written about Nama Sidhantha Grantha – Bhagavan Nama Koumudhi.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal fervently requested Sri Jagannath Pandit to provide him with the book he was inquisitively yearning to learn all these years as per the strict instruction and wishes of his Guru Vishwadhikendra Swamigal.

Purushothaman arrived at Kashi, He paid humble obeisance to His Guru Sri Vishwadhikendra Swamigal and explained what had happened during his journey to Kashi.  He solemnly waited for the permission of his Guru to give up his life in river Ganga as promised to his friend Gnanasagaran.  After listening to the grief-stricken incident, Sri Vishwadhikendra Swamigal gave a lecture about Dharma Sastra and advised Purushothaman with an appropriate solution for the serious issue.   Sri Vishwadhikendra Swamigal declared his intention to appoint Purushothaman as the next pontiff of Sankara Mutt. Morover, it would be a suitable solution for the promise Purushothaman had made to his friend Gnanasagaran, after receiving ‘Sanyasa Ashrama’ it would be treated as new birth for him.  Purushothaman instantly agreed to his Acharya without any further thought.  Purushothaman wholeheartedly accepted the instructions of His Guru, He received ‘Sanayasa’ and introduced him as Sri Bhodhendra Swamigal to this world.

Sri Bodhendra Swamigal stayed with his Guru in Varanasi for some time.  During this period, he has learned all the Dharma Sastras from Him.  After receiving the instructions from his Guru, Sri Bodhendra Swamigal left to South India for spreading Nama Bakthi.   The first instruction was spreading Nama Bakthi for the welfare of mankind, the other one was His Guru desired Sri Bodhendra Swamigal to master on the subject ‘ Nama Sidhantha Grantha’.  As per the instruction of His Guru , Sri Bodhendra Swamigal arrived at Puri where Sri Lakshmidhar a great saint was lived.  He  wrote ‘Bhagavan Nama Koumudhi’ – Nama Sidhantha Grantha,  Sri Vishwadhikendra Swamigal had sincerely preferred Sri Bodhendra Swamigal should learn and master on this subject.  After arriving at the holy land of Jagannatha (Puri) Sri Bodhendra Swamigal had the Darshan of the Lord at Jagannatha Temple.  He continued to search for Sri Lakshmidhar’s house and heard the disappointing news that he had passed away several months before and his son Jagannatha Pandit was in there.  As it was dark the house was locked from inside, Sri Bodhendral did not want to overburden the host by paying untimely visit t0 his house.  He patiently waited  on the porch engaged in meditation.

Sri Kesava Pandurangan and Smt. Sugunambal showed their utmost gratitude towards their Acharya by presenting one and only son Purushothaman  to Mutt to carry out the noble service to mankind.

Purushothaman continued to live under the shade and grace of His Acharya Sri Vishwadhikendra Saraswathy Swamigal.  His Acharya appointed well trained Sanskrit Scholars of Veda and Sastras to teach Purshothaman.  Purushothaman was the most diligent student and  was brilliant in his studies, he completed his studies at the age of 18 and had profound knowledge in Vedas, Sastras, Puranas etc …  The only subject he left out to study was Brahmavidya.  Purushothaman had the confidence that he would attain that too from his Guru as it was promised by him earlier.

While His Guru was on his spiritual tour to Varanasi, Purushothaman received an instruction to follow him.  Purushothaman had chosen his childhood friend Gnanasagaran to accompany him.   The two intimate friends started their journey to Kashi by walk.    Gnanasagaran was proficient in Astrology and had the intuition that he could not make his trip up to Kashi.  On the way, Gnansagaran revealed his worries to Purushothaman and felt sorry for his helplessness to escort him.  The two of them consoled and promised each other by saying that if anything happen to any one of them, the other person would perform the last rites and sacrifice his life in the holy river Ganga.  In that way, they could remain friends forever even after their death.

Unfortunately, it was Gnanasagarn who could not make up the journey to Kashi.  On half way to Kashi, Gnanasagarn became ill and passed away.  Purushothaman performed last rites for his friend and continued his journey.  Deepily hurt and isolated by the separation of his friend Purushothaman continued his journey to Kashi.

Sri Jagadguru Bodhendra Swamigal was born to Sri Kesava Pandurangan and Sugunambal, a childless couple for several years.  Sri Bodhendra Swamigal was born during the period of 17th-18th century in Kanchipuram -  known as one of Moksha Sthal.

Sri Kesava Pandurangan and Sugunambal had no offspring for quite some time.   The couples were distressed at the thought of no successor to follow their family custom and rites.  They approached their Acharya Sri Vishwadhikendra Saraswathy Swamigal, Pontiff of Kanchi Mutt.  They prayed to Him, as there is one saying ‘Guru Arul Illayel Thiruvarul Illai’, (Where there is No blessings of Guru, there will not be any Grace of Lord too ) the couple received blessings from their Acharya.  In due course of time, with the blessings of their Acharya, Sugunambal gave birth to a beautiful boy child.   They named the child – Purushothaman.  Years passes by, the couple performed Purushothaman’s Brahmopadhesham (sacred thread ceremony).  Purushothaman was a studious child with full of magnanimous amount of energy.   The couple brought Purushothaman to seek the blessings of their Acharya.  After seeing the brilliance in the child, Sri Vishwadhikendra Saraswathy Swamigal enquired ‘Who is this child?’ to  Kesava Pandurangan and Sugunambal.   The couple replied ‘It is your child, Guru’.   Sri Vishwadhikendra Saraswathy Swamigal trickily shot back with another question ‘In that case this child belongs to Mutt Isn’t it?’.  Kesava Pandurangan startled at this statement of Acharya.  He hesitated to reply anything for quite some time and most unwillingly he answered that he wanted to discuss with his wife before come into any conclusion.  He turned back to look at his wife’s face, she was weeping silently with lot of pain and emotions flickering through her face.  Kesava Pandurangan had mistaken at Sugunambal’s reactions.  He thought that his wife would not allow him to give away the child as he was the one and only to carry out the family heritage.  But, Kesava Pandurangan got thunderstruck at his wife’s reply that she was not worried or disinclined to give away the child to their Acharya and Mutt.  She continued, the reply of her husband to their Acharya made her feel terrible.  She firmly revealed that they are belonged to Acharya and the Mutt, and will remain the same.  The couple gave away their one and only child to Sri Vishwadhikendra Saraswathy Swamigal and Mutt to receive Sanyasa.
