There was a demon King Vanasura, he had mighty warriors Onan and Kanthan.  These two were assigned with the task of safe guarding the palace of the demon King in a place called ‘Puzhal’.  Onan, one of the warrior found a self-manifested Linga and started to worship.  He underwent severe penance praying to Lord and offered his blood for the sacred bath of the Lord.  The most pleased Lord offered him several boons.  The other warrior Kanthan too found a self-manifested Linga and started worshipping Lord.  He pleased Lord with his sincere and unparallel devotion to him.  The compassionate Lord provided him with many boons.  The same incident happened with another demon Jalandeshearan.  He also pleased the Lord and attained several boons.

Saint Sundara Murthy Nayana , a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva happened to visit this sacred land and found the three Lingas worshipped by the demons.  He was greatly pleased at the devotion of the demons and praised their good deeds.  Sundarar earnestly wanted to reveal the dedication of the three demons to the world and build temple in its place.  Unfortunately, there was no source for the funds and Sundarar was helpless to construct a temple.  He solemnly prayed to Lord and continued his self-less service to Lord singing his glorious verses.  Finally, Lord appeared before Sundarar and pointed a Tamarind tree and disappeared.  Instantly, the entire tree and its fruits were changed into golden color and showered golden coins.   Soon after, with all those gold coins Sundarar constructed this magnificent temple and preserved the Lingas as he was desired.

This temple remains open from morning 7.00AM to 7.00PM without any break.
