The legend has that Sundaramoorthy Nayanar while returning from Thiruvennainallur, he arrived on this sacred land and desired to worship Lord Shishtagurunathar.  Unfortunately, the river Thenpennai was overflowing and blocked Sundarar’s way with her strong current.   Sundarar was distraught at this sight and sang praising the glories of Lord Shistagurunathar watching from the river banks itself.   Instantly, there appeared an old couple instructed Sundarar to get on the boat they were travelling.  Therefore,  Sundarar safely reached on the other side of the river bank with the help of this old couple, when Sundarar turned to thank the couple for their boundless affection, he was shocked to notice that the couple was missing.   He searched the whole area but went on vain; soon he could listen to a mysterious voice commanding him to look at the sky.   There he could visualize Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati on their celestial vehicle (Bull – Rishabharoodan).  Sundarar earnestly prayed to Lord Shiva to advise him on Shaiva Siddhantha and austerities.   The most compassionate Lord accepted Sundarar as his disciple and advised him about the significance of asceticism.   Thus, the presiding deity has got his name ‘Shishtagurunathar’ in this temple.

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.00AM in the morning and 5.00PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
