Thiruvadukoor/Thiruvandar is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Puducherry District, Tamil Nadu.   In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built during the regime of King Paranthaka Chola I and the temple inscription also reveals its existences date back to the regime of King Rajaraja Chola I, King Rajendra Chola I and King Kulazehkara Chola I repsectively.

The legend has that the demon Mundasura underwent severe penance praying to Lord Shiva.   Lord was pleased at the austerities of Mundasura and offered him several boons.  Mundasura obtained a boon of eternal life, cannot be killed by the deities or demons which made him grew arrogant.  He won battles against the deities and Lord Brahma.  All the deities and Lord Brahma approached Lord Shiva to save them from the atrocities of the demon Mundasura.   At the command of Lord Shiva a ferocious form Vaduka Bhairava was originated and beheaded the demon Mundasura.   Later, Vaduka Bhairava underwent penance to get rid of the sin on this sacred land.   Thus, this place and the presiding deity have got names Vadukoor and ‘Vadukanathar’ respectively.




This temple remains open from 7.00AM to 10.00AM in the morning and 6.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
