Ambareesha was born to King Nabhaga who was the son of Vaivaswatha Manu.  Ambareesha wisely ruled the Earth surrounded by seven oceans.  He was a passionate devotee of Lord Vishnu and found extreme pleasure in the association and service to the devotees of Lord.

Ambareesha performed selfless service with utmost devotion and dedication to Supreme Lord, in that way he gained the supreme grace of Lord Vishnu, eventually the fierce weapon wheel/Sudarshana of Lord Vishnu was assigned to protect him.

Ambareesha with his pious wife arrived in Madhuvana situated on the river bank of Yamuna and observed Dwadhashi Vratha/fast for a year and underwent severe austerities; he conducted a grand ritual honoring the priests and offered them sixty crores of cows as charity.

Ambareesha completed the ritual procedures, it was supposed to be the day to break the long fast, in the mean time Sage Durvassa arrived at the palace was cordially invited to attend the feast.  Sage Durvassa who was inconsiderate by nature leisurely went to perform ablutions to river Yamuna.

King Ambareesha anxiously waited for Sage Durvassa, the time for breaking the fast/Parana was getting closer.  King Ambareesha, ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu took a sip of water in order to complete the Parana.  Sage Durvassa understood what was happened in his absence with his divine sight; in order to punish the King Ambareesha, he angrily plucked a hair from his matted hair locks and created an evil spirit Krithya.

The evil spirit Krithya viciously hurried with a sword to King Ambareesha, but he did not move an inch from the place.   Oh! Supreme Lord Vishnu, observed your devotee in peril, the fierce weapon Sudarshana consumed Krithya, just like the fire devour the offerings and begun to chase the Sage.

In this way, Sage Durvassa was chased by the holy weapon of Lord Vishnu for a year, Sage Durvassa frightfully ran across the whole universe, he could witness only Sudarshana nothing else.  He approached Lord Brahma and surrendered to him, but Lord Brahma was helpless to protect the Sage from the wheel of time. Soon, Sage Durvassa hurried to the Abode of Lord Shiva who venerates Lord Vishnu.

Ultimately, Sage Durvassa took shelter in the Abode of Lord Vishnu and prostrated before the supreme Lord.  Lord Vishnu spoke “ Oh! Rishi, I am the servant of my devotees/Bhakthadasa, knowledge and austerities combined with modesty and humility is imperative, therefore seek shelter at the feet of King Ambareesha.”

Sage Durvassa returned to King Ambareesha and plead for pardon holding his feet.  King Ambareesha was startled and withdrew his feet out of humility and eulogized the divine weapon Sudarshana, instantly the fierce weapon retired from the sight.  Sage Durvassa was praised King Ambareesha for his modesty and sincere devotion, and blessed him.

King Ambareesha waited a year for Sage Durvassa’s return without consuming any meal.  Finally, Ambareesha fed the Sage and bade farewell to him, after that he consumed the meal.  King Ambareesha’s devotion towards the Supreme Lord became twofold and ultimately attained union with the supreme Lord Vishnu.  Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, I earnestly pray to protect us.
