Thirukkacchur Alamkoyil/Kacchapesam/Thirukkacchur
is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Chengalpettu, Kanchipuram,Tamil
Nadu. In this temple Lord Shiva
worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.
Presiding deity – Thiru Kacchapeswarar/Virunthittaeeswarar
with his consort Goddess Sri Anjanakshi Ammai/Kanni Umayal
Mangalasasanam – Sundarar
Sundarar arrived on this sacred
land after several hours of tedious journey.
He worshipped Lord and passionately sung praising the glories of
Lord. Sundarar was exhausted due to
hunger and thirst after a strenuous journey, he fallen asleep on the spacious hall
of this temple. Lord felt empathy on Sundarar and appeared
before him disguised in the form of a Brahmin, the compassionate Lord touched
the shoulders of Sundarar instantly got out of sleep. The Brahmin spread a plantain leaf before Sundarar
and served the meal with a glass of water.
The meal served was of different colors and various taste in it,
Sundarar earnestly enquired the reason for the same. Brahmin replied that there was not enough
time left for cooking, so he went to the homes of nearby villagers and begged
for food. Sundarar was stirred at the humble
words of the Brahmin, after the meal he silently walked to the pond situated
here to get him cleaned, when he returned to the place Sundarar could not see
the Brahmin anywhere. Sundarar realized
the compassion of Lord, walking all through the village and begging food for
his devotee, his heart went on search for Him and brought tears in his eyes.

Lord Vishnu envisioned the Cosmic
dance form of Lord Shiva on this sacred place.
While the deities and demons
churning the milky ocean with Mount Mandara as center point and Serpent Vasuki
as its rope, Mount Mandara started titling and lost its balance caused
impediments in their task. Lord Vishnu
took the form of a massive tortoise and protected Mount Mandara holding firmly on
its back. Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord
Shiva in the form of a Kacchapa/tortoise in this sacred temple.

This temple remains open from
6.30 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning and 4.00 PM to 8.00 PM in the evenings.
