Thirukkalil/Thirukkandalam is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Vengal, Thiruvannur, Tamil Nadu.  The temple inscriptions reveal the contributions made by the Kings of Chola, Pandya and Emperors of Vijayanagara Kingdom.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

Presiding deity – Thiru Sivanandeswarar (Moolavar), Utsavar Sri Somaskandhamurthi  with his consort Goddess Sri Anandavalli Ammai

Mangalasasanam – Thiru Gnana Sambandhar

Thiru Gnana Sambandhar arrived on this sacred land and took holy dip in the pond Kuchasthali.  Immediately after the bathe, he realized that the bag contains materials used for daily rituals and holy ashes were missing.   Sambandhar worriedly conducted search and found a self-manifested Linga along with his belongings amidst the Kalli shrubs.

Sthalavruksham – Kalli

Theertham – Nandi Theertham, Kuchasthali river,

Worshipped by – Sage Bhrugu, Sage Agastya, Lava Kusa,

Sage Bhrugu worshipped Lord Shiva with the 1000 Kalli flowers and envisioned Lord as Sri Sakthi Dhakshinamurthi, an inseparable form of Lord with Goddess Sri Shakthi.

Festivals – Maha Shivaratri, Navaratri, Panguni Uthiram, Thiru Karthikai, Masi Makam, Vinayaka Chathurthi, Arudra Darisanam, Aippasi Annabhishekam, Skandha Shashti

Sannidhis – Lord Ganesha, Lord Nandikeshwara, Lord Subramanya, Kalahastheeswarar, Sakthi Dakshinamurthi

During the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva with Goddess Sri Parvati at Mount Kailash, an enormous crowd of deities, sages and rishis were assembled to witness the divine occasion and Sage Agastya was one amongst them.  Due to the immensity of the crowd, the Earth tilted to North and it was created a huge chaos.   Lord Shiva instructed Sage Agastya to move to South to bring stability on the Earth.  Sage Agastya reluctantly left Mount Kailash and arrived on this sacred land, conducted Pancheshti  Yagna and worshipped Lord.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Sage Agastya and revealed His existence as Somaskandha in Thirukkalil.  Sage Agastya underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Sri Parvati for 41 days in Thirukkalil and envisioned Lord Shiva as Sivanandeswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Anandavalli.  This is one of the sacred shrines on the Earth where Sage Agastya attained the vision of celestial marriage of Lord Shiva with Goddess Sri Parvati.

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 11.30 PM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 8.00 PM in the evenings.
