The legend has that the two calves of the divine cow Kamadhenu came down to Earth due to the curse inflicted upon them by Lord Brahma.  These calves were followed severe austerities and worshipped Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva to get rid of the curse.  During this period of time, these two calves were fortunate to listen to the glories of Lord Krishna narrated by the enlightened Vedic scholars of Oothakkadu and this practice was continued for quite some time.  As the years passed by, the calves were unable to hear the glorious speeches about the childhood pranks of Lord Krishna.  Sage Narada witnessed the distressed state of the calves and disguised in the form of a Brahmin to pacify them.  Sage Narada carried out the divine lectures about the birth of Lord Krishna and his childhood pranks from Srimad Bhagavatham/Dasamaskandham.  Once again, the calves were transformed themselves into the state of ecstasy listening to the glorious deeds of Krishna.    After listening to the splendid Kalinganarthana, the two calves were plunged into deep sorrow.    The calves were solemnly revealed their reason for their grief that caused after listening to the glorious Kalinganarthana of Lord and the hardships underwent by the Little Krishna, also added their earnest desire to envisage the Kalinganarthana of Lord Krishna.  Sage Narada and the divine cow Kamadhenu appealed to Lord Vishnu.  The Supreme Lord transformed into Little Krishna and performed Kalinganarthana on this sacred land, all the deities and sages witnessed the magnificent form of Lord and requested to remain on this sacred land with his everlasting presence to bless his devotees.  Eventually, the two calves were relieved from their curse and attained salvation.  Further, the idol of Kalinganarthana Perumal was sanctified by Sage Narada in this shrine.  It was Sage Narada’s immense desire to worship Lord Kalinganarthana Perumal was the reason for the birth of the celebrated poet Sri Venkatakavi who adored Lord Kalinganarthana Perumal with his enchanting mellifluous verses.
