The legend has that Lord Shiva with Goddess Sri Parvati having a pleasurable time visiting the gardens at Mount Kailash, a monkey in the garden plucked bunch of Vilva leaves and showered upon  Lord.  Lord was pleased at the act of monkey, with this devout act monkey took birth in the lineage of Manus.  Emperor Muchukundha was a righteous ruler and the people in his Kingdom lived a happy and prosperous life.  During his regime, he built many temples for the worship of Lord.   Once, the deities and demon had a fierce battle, in that war Emperor Muchukundha abundantly served the deities and became beloved of deities.  Emperor Muchukundha underwent severe austerities worshipping Lord Shiva.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Emperor, instructed him to build a temple at Thiruvarur and install the idol of Lord Somaskandha from Lord Indra has been worshipping for several years.    Lord Indra was not at all happy to give away the idol he has been worshipping for years, so tried to please Emperor with six similar idols of Lord Somaskandha.   The Emperor Muchukundha had to locate the original idol from the six idols exhibited in front of him.  With the grace of Lord the Emperor identified the unique idol and constructed a grand temple at Thiruvanur with the help of celestial sculptor Vishwakarma and positioned same in this temple.
