The legend has that the demon King Jalandhara underwent severe penance worshipping Lord Brahma.  Lord Brahma was pleased at the devotion of Jalandhara and appeared before him.  Jalandhara earnestly requested for immortality as a boon to Lord Brahma.  But, Lord Brahma revealed his powerlessness to provide such an atypical boon. Therefore, Jalandhara tactfully obtained a peculiar boon that as long as his chaste wife Vrinda remains unblemished would provide him long life.   Immediately after obtaining the boon Jalandhara started harassing the deities and sages.  All the deities and Sages arrived at Mount Kailash and appealed to Lord Shiva.  Shortly, Jalandhara arrived at Mount Kailash with all his warriors to fight against Lord Shiva.  Lord Shiva transformed into an old Brahmin and came into sight of Jalandhara.  In the meantime, Lord Vishnu took the form of King Jalandhara and emerged before Vrinda, at the instruction of Lord Shiva.  Vrinda was pleased to see her husband back and received him with great love, eventually she lost her chastity.  Lord Shiva has drawn a circle on the ground and commanded Jalandhara to lift it.  Jalandhara contemptuously laughed at the old Brahmin and lifted the circle with all the haughtiness.  Soon, the circle lifted turned into a dice and killed him instantly.

Vrinda deeply mourned at the death of her husband King Jalandhara and cursed Lord Vishnu ought to have the same fate of painful separation from his consort and sacrificed her life.   Later the curse of Vrinda resulted the incarnation of Lord Rama on Earth.  Lord Vishnu was afflicted with the curse of Vrinda.  Lord Shiva implant a seed at the place where Vrinda sacrificed her life and a Tulsi plant was grown its place.  Consequently garland made out of Tulsi embellished on Lord Vishnu’ chest caused to wash off the curse of Vrinda.
