was the birth place of Thiru Kanampulla Nayanar. He
was born in a wealthiest family and a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. Thiru Kanampulla Nayanar utilized his entire
wealth for the service of Lord Shiva and his devotees. He joyfully engaged in the service of
lightening lamps at the temple of Lord Shiva.
He found immense pleasure in singing and dancing praising the glories of
Lord. He preceeded his spiritual journey
to Chidambaram and continued his selfless service. Later, he moved to Thirupulicharam and resumed his endearing
service to Lord.
Gradually, Thiru
Kanampulla Nayanar's wealth was deteriorated and found no means to carry out his appealing
service to Lord. He was not
disappointed, he started collecting ‘Kanampullu’ ( a special kind of grass used
for the worship) and selling the same.
With the money he had earned was utilized for the purchase of ghee and
thread. In this way, he carried out his noble service to Lord.
One day, Thiru
Kanampulla Nayanar was anxiously waited so long for the prospective buyer of
his grass. Unfortunately, nobody turned
out to buy them. His heart was sunk at the thought of
discontinue his service to Lord. Nayanar
waveringly moved through the temple premise, he made a wick out of the raw
grass and started to burn them in place of ghee lamp. Thus, he burnt the stacks of grass he had
collected that day. Finally, there was
nothing left to burn anymore. He
aggressively stretched his hair towards the earthen lamp and started burning strands of hair. Lord Shiva was pleased at the
devotion of the Thiru Kanampulla Nayanar, Lord appeared before him and blessed
him with Salvation.
In the Tamil
month Karthikai – Kruthika is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day of Thiru
Kanampulla Nayanar, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
