Thiru Amathur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord
Shiva located in Vizhippuram District, Tamilnadu. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the
form of a self-manifested Linga.

The legend has that initially there was no horn for the cows to
protect themselves from their enemies. They
approached Lord Nandikeshwara and appealed to him. Lord Nandikeshwara instructed Kamadhenu and the
herds of cows to worship Lord Abirameswara on this sacred land and blessed with
a sharp projection on their forehead to protect from their rivals.
In this temple Lord Abirameswara worshipped in the form of a
self-manifested linga can be seen with a hoof mark on it.
This temple remains open from 7.00 AM to 11.30 AM in the morning
and 5.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
