Thiruppuliyur/Bheema Kshetram is one of the 108
Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu located in Chengannur, Alappuzha, Kerala.
Presiding deity – Moolavar Mayapiran with his
consort Goddess Thiruporkodi Nachiyar,
Theertham – Pragna Saras, Panjunnai Theertham
Vimanam – Purushothama Vimanam
Mangalasasanam – Nammalvar, Thirumangai Alwar
Significance – Bheema, one of the Pancha
Pandavas built this temple.
Prathyaksham to – Saptha Rishis
Festivals – Vaikundha Ekadashi, Janmashtami,
Thai Utsavam,
The legend has that Saptha Rishis arrived on
this land and found it was afflicted with severe drought and famine. The King – Son of Sibi Chakravarthy who was
ruled the city offered this land as alms to Saptharishis. But, the Saptharishis refused to accept this sinful
land as alms. He tried to persuade the
Saptharishis in many unscrupulous ways to remain this land, but everything went
in vain. The King performed a Yagna and
Kritiyai –Marga Stri was originated from the sacrificial fire to assist the
King in his deceitful attempt to influence the Saptharishis. Saptharishis prayed to Lord Vishnu to protect
from the wickedness of the King. Lord
Vishnu instructed Lord Indra to wipe out Kritiyai from this sacred land. Lord Indra took the form of a tiger (puli)
and vanquished Kritiyai. Thus, this land
has got its name Thiruppuliyur.
This temple remains open from 5.00AM to 11.00AM
in the morning and 5.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
