The
legend has that Thiru Gnana Sambandhar was a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva and
one of the prominent 63 Nayanars.
Sambandhar had his wedding ceremony in this temple; Goddess Parvati
received the guests with holy ashes who were present to witness this marriage. Hence, Goddess Parvati has got the name
‘Thiruvenneetrumai Ammai in this temple.
Thiru
Gnana Sambandhar with his wife worshipped Lord Shivalokathyagesar and Goddess
Thiruvenneetrumai Ammai and authentically sung the glories of Lord. Instantaneously an enormous, brilliant light
appeared from the sanctum sanctorum.
Sambandhar advised his group of holy men to embrace the divine light. Some of them were petrified and turned back
after visualizing the massive fire. At this point of time, Sambandhar described
the glories of Panchakshara Mantra and sung one of his famous compositions
Namashivaya Thirupathikam. Eventually, Sambandhar
along with all the holy men gathered including Thiru Nilakanda Yazhpanar, Thiru
Nilakanda Nayanar and Muruga Nayanar clinched into the brilliant dazzling light
and attained the Abode of Lord Shiva in
this sacred place.
Whoever
worships Goddess Thiruvenneetrumai Ammai and apply holy ashes available here as
prasad on their forehead would be blessed with long and blissful married life.
This
temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 8.00PM
in the evenings.
