Thirukottiyur
is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva situated 3kms away from
Kumbakonam, on the northern banks of River Cauvery. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the
form of a self-manifested Linga which was found under the castor bean plant. Consequently, this sacred place came to known
as ‘Thirukottiyur’.
Presiding
diety – Sri Koteeshwarar/Sri Kailasanathar with his consort Goddess Sri
Pandhadu Nayaki. It is believed that Goddess
Pandhadu Nayaki flings away the sufferings of her devotees like a ball at her
feet.

‘Koteeshwarar’ in this temple.

The
legend has that King Satyarathi’s son Suruchi lost his charm due to a curse and
turned out an ogre. He worshipped Lord
Shiva in this sacred land and had a dip in the holy pond. Finally he regained his lost charm once
again.
It is
believed that whoever worships Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in this sacred place
would attain wisdom, grace and charm along with abundance of merits.
This
temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00AM in the morning and 3.00PM to 8.00PM
in the evenings.
