Varaha Puranam describes the manifestation of Lord Ganesha and the significance of Chathurthi.
Once all the deities approached Lord Shiva to resolve a major issue, the deities were experiencing all sorts of hurdles in their tasks. On the contrary the Demons were successful in completing all their duties with ease. After hearing the issues of panick struck deities, Lord Shiva burst into laughter. At this point of time, a radiant adolscent was formed from His wide opened mouth. The child was adorable with all the divine beauties. Goddess Parvati, who was sitting beside Lord Shiva, could not take her eyes from the beauty of the child. Lord Shiva got angry with Her, it prompted Him to curse the child. He cursed the child to be elephant headed, with pot belly and a Yajopaveetham of snake.
Lord Shiva's anger did not stop there, He was swetting profusely. Each drop of His sweat produced numerous Ganeshas with elephant heads and pot bellies. Lord Brahma appeared in front of Him and advised that the child who came out of his mouth should be manifested as a sacred deity. Lord Shiva accepted the child who was first born out of his mouth as the main deity for all worships and rituals. He blessed the child and manifested as Lord Ganesha. Lord Shiva blessed Him that his devotees would worship Lord Ganesha prior to any rituals which would bring all the good luck and they will never face any obstacle in their work.
Chathurthi is an auspicious day - The day of manifestation of Lord Ganesha. The devotees who worship Lord Ganesha and Fast on this day will get all the good luck and successes in their endeavor.
In Ganesha Sahasranamavali there is a Thirunamam for Lord Ganesha - Chathurthi Poojana Priyana Nama:
