Brahma Vaivarta Puranam - Lord Kubera - Lord of Wealth !!

Brahma Vaivarta Puranam describes the birth of Kubera as the eldest son of Sage Vishrava.  Sage Vishrava had two wives.  Kubera was born to his first wife.  The second wife was a demon who gave birth to Ravana, Kumbakarna and Vibhishana.  Eventually, Lanka was ruled by the eldest son of Sage Vishrava - Kubera.  His relationship with his step brothers was quite good.

Kubera's step mother (the demon) did not like Kubera mingling with her sons.  She prompted her sons to consider Kubera who had all godly status.  The demons were always enemy of deities.  She compelled them to move against Kubera and raise their status. 

As instructed by their mother, the three sons - Ravana, Kumbakarna and Vibhishana  moved to the Forest to perform penance.  Lord Brahma blessed them with the boon of Victory over Kubera to attain Kingdom Lanka.  Ravana also obtained the boon to grow stronger. With the divine boon, they defeated Kubera and made him run out of the Kingdom.  Ravana ordered the people of the Kingdom not to give shelter to his step brother Kubera. If anybody did so, they had to undergo severe punishment - death.

                                     

Kubera approached his grandfather - Pulastya and sought advice to get rid of his desperate state.  Pulastya advised him to do penance and pray to Lord Shiva on the river banks of Gautami - Ganga.  Lord Shiva was pleased with the Tapasya of Kubera and offered him a boon.  Lord Shiva granted the boon - everyone worship Kubera as the Lord of Wealth.
