Lord Shiva and Goddess Sri
Parvati were having pleasing hours playing dice game in Mount Kailash, at the
end of the each game Lord Shiva won over Goddess Sri Parvati, it annoyed
her. Lord Shiva got angry and cursed
Goddess Sri Parvati to become cow and go down to Earth. Goddess Sri Parvati took the form of divine
cow Kamadhenu, underwent severe penance worshipping on Lord Shiva in this
sacred land. Ultimately she was relieved
from the curse and reunited with the Lord. Thus Lord Shiva is known as Go Mukthiswarar
in this temple.
The legend has that Thiru Gnana
Sambandhar visited this sacred shrine with his father Shivapadha Hrudhayar, he
was heartily desired to conduct a Yagna at Shirkazhi, but he has no source of
income to provide the requirements for the Yagna. Shivapadha Hrudhyar revealed his intense desire
to conduct the Yagna to his son. Sambandhar
earnestly prayed to Lord Masillamaniswarar and sung praising his glories. Lord was pleased at the devotion of
Sambandhar and delivered gold coins required to conduct the Yagna through his
Ganas,. Eventually, Shivapadha Hrudhayar
conducted grand Yagna at Shirkazhi utilizing this gold coins.
