Jai Sriman Narayana !!
Narayana Kavacham is described in
Srimad Bhagavatham, Sixth Skandha – Chapter 8.
It was narrated by Sage Suka to King Pareekshith, son of Abhimanyu as a
means to protect himself from the enemies, which was earlier taught by Sage
Vishwaroopa to Lord Indra. Whoever
listens or recite the auspicious hymn would be relieved from all the sins and
protected by the Supreme Lord Vishnu.
King Pareekshith spoke “Oh! Illustrious
Brahmin, I earnestly request you to describe the protective shield of Lord
Narayana which was protected thousand eyed Lord Indra in the vicious battle
with the well armed warriors of demons effortlessly, ultimately outshined his
enemies and also attained control over three worlds and wealth.”
Sage Suka replied “Oh! King
Pareekshith, Sage Vishwaroopa, son of Thwashtra was the priest of Lord Indra,
who taught the auspicious hymn praising the shield of Lord Narayana to Lord
Indra. Oh! King, listen to me carefully I will to
teach you the divine hymn.”
Sage Suka continued “ when you
are besieged with fear or anxiety, perform ablutions and take a seat on the
sacred grass facing north and perform formal procedures like Achamanam wearing
the holy grass on your finger, recite the hymns with symbols to attain clarity
of speech, meditate upon Lord Narayana and follow the symbols touching the
significant parts of the boy pronouncing the Pranava Manthra ‘OM’, recite ‘Shakaram’
by touching the middle of two eyebrows ‘Nakaram’ by touching the Shikha, ‘Vekaram’
by touching both the eyes, ultimately ‘Nakaram’ by touching all joints and pay
salutations to Lord Narayana facing six directions would transform the dull
into wise, meditate upon the six major powers/Shadshakthi such as wealth, prowess,
charity, fame, wisdom & renunciation and recite the holy hymn praising the
glories of Lord Narayana.”
Lord Narayana/Hari whose lotus
feet rests on the celestial bird, armed with conch, wheel, dice, sword, bow,
mace and rope protect me always, let the Matsya incarnation of Lord Narayana
protect me in the water, Lord Varuna protect me from the fatal creatures in the
water, Lord Vamana protect me on the Land and Lord Trivikrama protect me in the
sky, Lord Narasimha with his mighty roar and power annihilate the entire demons
would protect me from woodlands & war field, Lord Varaha who was originated
from Yagna and has fierce form like the protruding teeth was saved the mother
Earth would protect my paths, Lord Parasurama protect me on the mountains and
hills, Lord Rama, elder brother of Bharatha and Lakshmana would protect me when
I am away from my own land.
May Lord Narayana forgive and
protect me when I break the rules of righteousness and commit sins, Maharishi
Narada would protect me from false pride,
Sage Datthathreya would forgive me for not observing Yoga, meditation
etc.. Sage Kapila would protect me from the bondage of Karma, Sage Sanathkumara
would protect me from the cupid arrows of Lord Kamadeva, and Lord Hayagreevah
would protect me while I am on travel or commit severe mistakes by
disrespecting the Vedas/ scriptures/deities.
Maharishi Narada would protect me from my absence in performing any
propitious deeds, ultimately Lord Hari who took the incarnation of wild
tortoise would protect me from the different types of hell. Lord Dhanvanthari would protect me from evil
effects caused from the consumption of food.
Rishabha, the renounced soul would protect me from the fears of
illusion, Sage Yajna would protect me from the evil effects in the society,
Lord Balarama would protect me from the enemies, and Lord Adishesha would
protect me from the fear of anger. Sage
Dhwaipayana/Veda Vyasa would protect me from lack of wisdom and spiritual awakening;
Lord Buddha would protect me from insincerity and ignorance, Lord Kalki who is
the savior of righteousness, yet to incarnate protect me the evil effect all through
the Kali era.
Lord Keshava with his mace would
protect me in the early dawn and Govinda with his flue and Lord Naraya with his
might in the morning hours, Lord Vishnu protect me with his wheel in the noon, Lord Madhu with his great bow would protect
me in the afternoon, Lord Madhava, form of trinities would protect me in the
evening, Lord Rishikesha would protect me during the hours from dawn and
midnight, Lord Padmanabha alone would protect me in the midnight, Lord Srivatsadhama
would protect me in the remaining part of the night, Lord Janardhana who has
powerful sword would protect me just before dawn, Lord Dhamodhara would protect
me at the time of sunrise and Lord Vishweshwara in the morning.
Oh! Lord Sudharshana, holy wheel
your edges are like raging fire at the time of deluge, you will move at the
will of Lord Narayana, you are fast and furious capable to burn everything into
ashes, I earnestly prays to annihilate my enemies. Oh! Holy mace, the dear servant of Lord
Narayana, the sparks derived from the touches
of yours are unbearable like Vajra, I earnestly prays to thrash the evil
spirits, Yakshas, Rakshas/demon and all my enemies. Oh! Holy conch, the reverberating noise of
you while Lord Krishna blows causes enemies to perplex and drive away all the
evils like ghouls, devils, Pramadhas and hideous creatures. Oh! Holy sword, the
fierce weapon of Lord Narayana cut my enemies into pieces and the sinners into sightless. Oh! Lord Narayana, praising your glories and
fierce weapon would eradicate all the fears related to changes in the planets,
Kings, serpents, ghosts and sins. Oh!
Lord Garuda who is praised by Vedas and supreme Lord would protect me from all
the troubles. Oh! Lord Vikshvasena,
singing the glories of Lord would protect me from the entire dilemma.
Let the glorious names and forms
of Lord Narayana, fierce weapon and Nithyasuris/who always resides in the abode
of Lord Narayana/eternal servants would protect my mind, soul and senses from
all the sins and peril. The supreme Lord
Narayana dwells in all the living and non-living beings and he will eradicate
all the evils. To the hedonistic those who does not believe
in the various incarnations of the supreme Lord and his weapons, the ultimate
truth is that the supreme Lord Narayana is omnipresent, omnipotent and
omniscient will protect me always.
Lord Narasimha with his fierce
form protected his passionate devotee Prahlada from elephant, serpents and all
the evils, in the same manner protect me from all directions. Thus Sage Vishwaroopa said ‘Oh! Lord Indra, I
have described the great armor of Lord Narayana/Hari, which would help you to
annihilate the army of demons and protect yourself. Whoever witnesses or worship the great armors
of Lord Narayana would be released from fears and anxieties. Whoever recites these holy hymns would be
released from fear of enemies, Kings, animals and evil effects from the changes
in planets.”
Long ago there was a Brahmin from
Koushika Gothra was well versed with the glories of the armors of Lord Narayana
was gave up his life in a desert. A
celestial Gandharva along with the Apsaras were travelling in a plane and suddenly
the plane took a sudden halt, the Gandharva and the Apsaras landed in the
desert where the Brahmin’s mortal body was lying. Soon, the Balakhilyas/Sages appeared before
the celestial Gandharva and advised him to perform final rite for the
Brahmin. Thus, the Brahmin’s soul
attained salvation due to the devoutness he had attained by reciting the holy
hymns of Narayana Kavacham.
Sage Suka continued “Whoever
listens or recite the holy hymns of Lord Narayana would be honored by all
beings and he/she would be freed from all fears and anxieties”.
