The legend has that all the
deities and sages approached Goddess Sri Parvati and appealed to protect them
from the atrocities of demon Dhoomralochana.
The compassionate mother of the Universe entered in a fierce battle with
the demon and it continued for quite some time, Goddess Durga assigned the
Sapthakanykas to hunt the demon Dhoomralochana who was rushed to the dense forest
of Kadamba. Shortly Dhoomralochana hurried to the
hermitage of Sage Kathyayana. The
Sapthakanyakas arrived on the spot and found Sage Kathyayana engrossed in meditation;
they mistook him as Dhoomralochana and killed the sage. Soon, the Sapthakanyas were afflicted with
the sin of Brahmahathya. They earnestly
prayed to Goddess Sri Durga for protection, at the divine instruction the
Sapthakanyakas arrived on this sacred place and worshipped Lord
Kadambavanathar, eventually got rid of the sin and prayed to Lord
Kadambavanathar to vanquish the demon Dhoomralochana.
