The water source oozing from the
mouth of Lord Nandikeshwara appears at the feet of the presiding deity, thus
the place has got its name Thiruvooral/Thiruooral.
Dakshaprajapathi conducted a
grand Yaga with an intention to disgrace Lord Shiva. Ultimately, Goddess Sri Parvati sacrificed
her life in the sacrificial fire. Lord
Veerabhadra, a fierce form of Shiva beheaded Dakshaprajathi on this sacred
land. The squeal of Dakshaprajapathi echoed
in this land brought the name Thakkolam.
Sage Dheergadha was born to Sage
Udhathi, brother of Devaguru Bruhaspathi.
Sage Dheergadha witnessed the divine cow near his hermitage and
requested to assist him to conduct Yagna.
Kamadhenu revealed her inability to support him, instead she advised
Sage Dheergadha to appeal to Lord Indra.
Sage Dheergadha cursed Kamadhenu to remain an ordinary cow, consequently
she lost her divinity. Kamadhenu cursed
the Sage; eventually he lost ascetic nature and engaged into worthless
activities. Sage Udhathi was distressed
at the ill-fate of his son; he arrived in this sacred land at the divine
instruction of Maharishi Narada and worshipped Lord Shiva. Lord was pleased at the devotion of Sage
Udhathi and instructed him to perform severe austerities praying to Lord
Nandikeshwara and perform sacred bath to Lord with the water source emergent
from the mouth of Lord Nandikeshwara. Kamadhenu
worshipped Lord by pouring her milk, eventually Sage Dheergadha relieved from
the curse and Kamadhenu regained her divinity once again.
This temple remains open from
6.30 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and 4.00 PM to 8.00 PM in the evenings.
