Lord Kubera, Lord of wealth was
born to Sage Vishravass, Son of Sage Pulastya.
He underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma was pleased at the devotion of
Lord Kubera and provided him Pushpakavimanam as a boon. It has the capacity to carry any number of
passengers, to any distance and it also has the capacity to fly according to
the will of the passenger and reduces or increases its size effortlessly to
occupy its passengers. Demon King Sumali
noticed the treasures of Lord Kubera, he had a desire to have a grandson with
the equivalent capabilities of Kubera,
so that he can conquer the three world with the resources. He encouraged his daughter Kaisiki to marry
Sage Vishravass and immediately to have child so that they can rule the entire
world with the wealth. Kaisiki also
agreed to follow the instructions of her father. Sage Vishravass mesmerized at the captivating
beauty of Kaisiki, she requested Sage to marry her. Sage Vishravas readily yielded her desire, eventually they got married according to the
prescribed rules, she earnestly insisted Sage Vishravas to have physical
relationship right after their marriage.
Sage Vishravas advised her to wait till the completion of sunset and
narrated her that the child conceived and born at this time of sun set would be
imperfect with demonic nature. But Kaisiki
was worried about his change of mind, compelled him to have physical relationship
immediately.
Thus, Sage Vishravas and Kaisiki
had physical relationship at the time of sun-set and conceived a child. In due course of time, she gave birth to a completely
disfigured child with 10 heads, vicious eyes and 20 hands. Kaisiki was horrified and distraught at the
sight of the new born. Instantaneously,
Kaisiki begged for forgiveness to Sage Vishravas and requested him to rectify
the deformities of their child with all his piousness. Sage Vishravas revealed his helplessness to
resolve the deformation, instead he agreed to transform the child’s figure into
stunningly beautiful with all those ten heads with attractive eyes, strong and eye-catching
physique and powerful 20 arms. They
named the child Dashamukha.
Dashamukha/Dashanan grown up into most authoritative and handsome youth,
he was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva; he captured the Kingdom of Lanka
from his brother Lord Kubera and became the ruler of Lanka. Once, Dashanan
haughtily approached Mount Kailash to relocate the same with an intention to
prove his mightiness along with staunch devotion. While Ravana was trying to lift the Mount
Kailash, Lord Shiva pressed his right leg thumb forcefully on the Earth,
eventually that caused him to crush beneath it.
Dashanan cried out of uncontrollable pain and the entire Kailash was
echoed with his cries of him for several years and it disturbed the tranquility
of the atmosphere of Deva Loka. There
appeared Sage Vageesa, one the staunch devotees of Lord Shiva advised him to
sing Samaganam one of the most favorites of Lord Shiva. Dasamukha marvelously sang Samaganam famously
known as Shivathandava Stotra and pleased the Lord. Lord Shiva honored him with a title Ravana (One
who cries all the time) and Chandrahasa,
a powerful sword and blessed him to rule
his Kingdom successfully for several years.
