Thirukkovalur is one of the 275
Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Vizhippuram District, Tamilnadu. There are 8 sacred shrines of Lord Shiva
where Lord performed glorious acts to reinstate the righteousness on the land
where famously known as Ashta Veerattanam and Thirukkovalur is one amongst them
denotes the place where Lord Shiva vanquished the demon Andhakasura (demon represents ignorance). In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the
form of a self-manifested Linga.

Significance:
In this temple Lord Ganesha was
worshipped by famous Tamil poet Thiru Avvayyar.
While Sundaramurthi Nayanar and Cheraman Peruman where travelling on their
way to Mount Kailash on Airavatham and
horse respectively. They met Thiru Avvayyar
who was immersed in the worship of Lord Ganesh at this sacred place. Thiru Avvayyar was cordially invited by
Sundaramurthi Nayanar and Cheraman Peruman to go along with them and revealed
their willingness to accompany her.
Thiru Avvayyar was graciously refused to follow them as her worship of
Lord Ganesha was incomplete. Lord
Ganesha was pleased at the devotion of Avvayyar and relocated her to Mount
Kailash with his trunk. Hence, Avvayyar
reached Mount Kailash before Sundaramurthi Nayanar and Cheraman Peruman could
arrive.
This sacred place has the
glorious past which describes the splendid incident in the life of three
prominent Vaishnavaite Acharyas Peyalwar, Boothathalwar and Thirumazhisai
Alwar.
This is the birth place of King
Rajaraja Choza/Thirumurai Kanda Chozan, who built the famous temple of
Thanjavur Brahatheeswara Temple/ Thanjai Periya Kovil
