Thirukadaiyur/Thirukkadavoor/ Pancha Mayana Kshetram/Thirumeignanam is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu.  The Mayana Kshetrams are the sacred places of Lord Shiva where Lord Brahma was burnt to ashes.  The five Mayana Kshetrams are Kasi Mayanam/Varanasi, Kacchi Mayanam/Kanchipuram, Kazhi Mayanam/ Shirkazhi, Nallur Mayanam/Thirunallar and Kadavur Mayanam/Thirukadaiyur.  The temple inscription reveals the contributions made by the Kings of Chozha and Pandya.

The sacred bath for Lord Brahmapureeswarar has performed with Brahma Theertham (Ganga) only.  Once King Bahuleya wanted to experiment this by pouring water brought from Varanasi, it caused a crack on the top of the Linga and it’s still visible on the deity.

After attaining the boon of immortality, Sage Markandeya underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva on this sacred land.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Sage Markandeya and brought the holy river Ganga on a Panguni – Aswini to continue the veneration without any impediments.

This is one of the prominent places of Lord Shiva where Lord Brahma was burnt into ashes. All the deities arrived on this sacred land; they underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva. They all appealed to Lord Shiva to restore Lord Brahma’s life so as to reinstate the function of Trinities. Lord Shiva was pleased at the devotion of the deities and brought back Lord Brahma into life. Moreover, the most compassionate Lord provided eternal wisdom and knowledge to Lord Brahma.
 
This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.30PM in the morning and 4.30PM to 8.30PM in the evenings.
