Kodumpalur was
the birth place of Thiru Idankazhi Nayanar.
He was a righteous ruler and zealous devotee of Lord Shiva. Kodumpalur was the capital city of Kindgom
Konadu/Pudukottai which was ruled by King Idankazhi. The people in his Kingdom were intellectuals,
Vedic scholars and true believers in Shaiva Siddhantha. Therefore, Thiru Idankazhi Nayanars Kingdom
flourished with rich natural resources and people were lived happy and
prosperous life.
There was an enthusiastic
devotee of Lord Shiva lived in this city.
He worshipped Lord and his devotees with utmost reverence. He served the devotees of Lord with food and
necessities abundantly. Gradually, his
wealth was depleted; he found no means to serve the devotees anymore. He was totally depressed; his heart was not
willing to bring to an end to his regular practice of serving the devotees of
Lord. He was not willing to accept the
realities of his inability to serve the devotees; it caused unbearable pain for
him. One night he sneaked into the grain warehouse of the King
Idankazhiyar with an intention to make off some grains. Soon, he was caught by the King’s men and
moved him to the assembly of the King.
After series of enquiries the main reason behind the theft was revealed
that it was not for any personal benefit.
King Idankazhiyar freed the devotee and a new announcement was made that
the grain house of the palace will be accessible for all the devotees of Lord
for their selfless service to Lord. In
this manner, King Idankazhiyar promoted the growth of Shaivism and belief in Shaiva
Siddhantha in his Kingdom for several years.
Lord was pleased at the devotion of King Idankazhiyar and blessed him
with salvation.
In the Tamil
month Aippasi – Kruthikai is widely celebrated as Guru Puja Day of Thiru
Idankazhi Nayanar, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
