Thiru Alavai/Madurai
was ruled by King Kunpandiyan and his Queen Managayarkkarisiyar. Queen
Mangayarkkarasiyar was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. The King Kunpandiyan was attracted towards
Jainism and embraced the Jain teachings and philosophies. Due to this, people were forced to accept
Jainism and prohibited to worship Lord Shiva and practice Shaiva
Siddhantha. The Queen Mangayarkkarasiyar
was worried at the state of affairs; she anticipated a substantial damage that
could affect the beliefs in Shaiva worship.
Immediately, she sought the help of Minister of their assembly
Kulachiraiyar who was also a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva. They invited Thiru Gnana Sambandhar to
Madurai with an intention of reinstate the glories of Shaiva Siddhantha and worship
of Lord Shiva.
Thiru Gnana
Sambandhar paid a visit to Madurai and stayed outskirts of the city. Kulaichiraiyar, the minister of King’s
assembly requested Sambandhar to visit the King Kunpandiya who was suffering
from severe heat blisters. Sambandhar had to face several protests from
the Jains but everything ended in vain. Seeing the miserable state of the King, Sambandhar
earnestly prayed to Lord for the wellbeing of King Kunpandya. Sambandhar
passionately sung praising the glories of Lord Shiva. In a moment, all the heat blisters and the
hunch on his back vanished miraculously. King Kunpandya stood straight once again. This phenomenal
was a great revelation for King Kunpandya.
He felt ashamed of his mistake and turned out a passionate devotee of
Lord Shiva.
The King
Kunpandya / Thiru Nindraseer Nedumara Nayanar made great efforts to spread Shaivism
with its full strength right through the length and breadth of his Kingdom with
the help of Queen Mangayarkkarasiyar and Thiru Kulaichirai Nayanar. This exceptional couple had utmost reverence
for Thiru Gnana Sambandhar and Shaiva Siddhantha. Lord was please at the devotion and dedication
of this couple. Finally, they both attained the Abode of Lord
Shiva.
In the Tamil
month Aippasi – Barani is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day, the day Thiru
Nindraseer Nedumara Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
