The legend has
that hermits of Darukavana had attained highest of spiritual knowledge and
became proud at their achievement. They
disregarded the supreme Lord, immersed in the strict austerities and fire
sacrifices. Lord Vishnu appeared before
the hermits as Mohini. Instantly, the
entire Darukavana hermits forgot their austerities and fallen at the attractiveness
of Mohini. They felt irresistible at the
charisma of Mohini and repudiated all the religious fervor. Lord Shiva transformed into Bikshadaneswarar
and approached the wife of hermits. They
fascinated at the magnetism of Bikshadaneswarar and immediately lost their
chastity. Darukavana hermits enraged at
their failure and conducted a Yaga in that they formed a tiger with their
austerities and set out the Tiger to
kill Lord Shiva. Soon all their hard
tasks went on unsuccessful, Lord Shiva slaughtered the Tiger and clothed its
skin; the snakes initiated from the Yaga were worn around Lord’s neck. Finally, the most compassionate Lord Shiva
appeared before them as Darukavaneswarar.
Darukavana hermits realized their mistake and surrendered to Lord Shiva.
This temple remains open from
