The legend has that Lord Shiva cursed Goddess Sri Parvathy for her negligence and she was transformed into a cow.  Goddess Sri Parvathy was deeply regretted at her slackness and prayed to Lord Shiva.  Lord consoled Goddess Sri Parvathy that she would attain her real form and reunite with the Lord in an appropriate time.  Goddess Sri Parvathy attained the form of Cow and came down to Earth along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, Goddess Sri Saraswathy and Goddess Indrani who were also assumed the form of cow and followed her.  Lord Vishnu transformed himself into a cowherd and was taken care of the cows.  Goddess Sri Parvathy in her form of Cow dispensed her milk on the Linga and worshipped Lord on this sacred land.  Lord Shiva was pleased at the devotion of the cow.  Thus, Goddess Sri Parvathy regained her real form and reunited with the Lord.  This is one of the sacred lands where the marriage rituals of divine couple were performed by Lord Brahma.  Thus, this holy land has got its name ‘Thiruvelvikudi’.
