The legend has that Lord Rama returned to his Kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and vanquished the demon King Ravana.  On their way back to Ayodhya Lord Rama paid visits to the hermitage of Sages & Rishis who were earnestly prayed  Lord to remain with them forever.  Lord Rama has to accomplish the promise given to Bharatha.  Lord instructed Vishwakarma, the celestial sculptor to create an indistinguishable image and offered them to the Rishis & Sages.  This is the origin of the idols worshipped in Vaduvur Sri Kodhandarama Swamy Temple.

In the year 1832 the state of Thanjavur was under the ruling of King Sherfoji II.  The King had a dream on that Lord Rama instructed to unearthing the idol of Lord from the village Thalanayiru in Nagapattinam District and construct a worship place.  King Sherfoji II with his men arrived on this place and continued the excavation process.  Eventually, they unearthed the idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lakshman, Bharatha and Anjaneya.  While returning to their Kingdom, the villagers of Thalanayiru opposed the idea of relocating the idols.  Finally, the King had to make a peace treaty with the villagers and handed over the idol of Bharatha & Lakshman.  They preceded their journey to Vaduvur with the idol of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Anjaneya.  At Vaduvur the villagers were in ecstasy, they pleaded the King to install the idols in the temple of Sri Gopalakrishna located here.  Initially, King refused to the very idea of the villagers.  The villagers threatened to take away their lives by jumping from the temple tower.  Finally, the King had to yield to the desire of the villagers of Vaduvar.  Thus, the idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita Devi and Lord Anjaneya were installed in the temple of Sri Gopala Swamy.

This temple remains open from 7.30AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.30PM to 8.30 PM in the evenings.
