Thiru Kaliya Nayanar
was born in a family of Oil Merchants in Thiruvotriyur, Tamil Nadu. He was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva; he
found immense pleasure in lightening the lamps at the temple of Lord Shiva –
Sri Adipureeswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Vadivudai Ammai. He blissfully engrossed in this amusing
service of lightening lamps at the entire temple premises for several years. Soon, his whole wealth diminished into
nothing but his yearning to lighten the lamps at the temple remained
untouched. He struggled to find a source
for living. He least bothered about his status and glorious past, wandered all
around searching for a job. Somehow he
managed to find a work under well-known merchants in his town. In this way, he resumed his tireless service
to Lord for quite some time. In a little
while, he lost that too and left with no money.
Thiru Kaliya Nayanar was firm in
his mission; he arrived at the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Adipureeswarar along
with his wife. He was already decided in
his mind that nothing could stop his service to Lord, he raised sharp knife to
his throat and began to cut. His wife
was alarmed at this sight; instantly a hand stopped Thiru Kaliya Nayanar from
his fearless act. There appeared Lord
Shiva with his consort Goddess Sri Parvathy before the righteous couple and
blessed them with Salvation.
In the Tamil
month Adi – Kettai is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day, the day Thiru
Kaliyanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
