Thiruchopuram is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalm of Lord
Shiva located in Kadalur (Cuddalore) District, Tamil Nadu. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the
form of a self manifested Linga .
Presiding deity – Thiru Gopuranathar/Mangalapuriswarar with his
consort Goddess Sri Mangala Nayaki/Gopura Nayaki/Thyagavalli Ammai
Mangalasasanam – Thiru Gnana Sambandhar
Worshipped by – Sage Agastya, Tribuvana Chakravarthy and his
wife Thyagavalli
Sthalavruksham – Kondrai
Sannidhis – Lord Ganesha, Lord Nandikeshwara, Lord Subramanya,
Goddess Gajalakshmi, Veeratteswara Linga, Kannappa Nayanar, Lord Bhairava, Lord
Surya, Navagrahas, 63 Nayanmars, Lord Somaskandhar, Goshtamurtham –
Lingodbhavar, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu,
The legend has that several years back the place and the whole
area was engulfed by the sand dune. One
of the Devotees of Lord came to know about this sacred place. He visited this land and could see only a
tiny part of the pinnacle of the temple structure. He immediately reported this to villagers and
brought back on the surface.
Sage Agastya arrived on this sacred land and fascinated at the
serenity of this land. He consecrated a
Linga and underwent severe austerities praying to Lord. In this temple Linga can be seen with the
marks of hand printed on it.
This temple remains open from 7.00AM to 11.00AM in the morning
and 5.30PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
