Thiruvadanai/Mukthipuram is one of the 275
Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Ramanathapuram District, Rameshwaram,
Tamil Nadu. In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a
self-manifested Linga.
This is one of the oldest and a prominent temple
of Lord Shiva occupies 10 acres of massive land famous for its architectural and
sculptural work. It has a majestic
Rajagopuram, wide circumambulatory paths with stunning murals and pillars lived
to tell the saga in all four Yugas. The temple inscription has revealed that it
was originated from the divine nectar descended from the Deva Loka.
Presiding deity – Thiru Adanai Nathar/Adhirathineswarar/Ajagajeswarar
with his consort Goddess Sri Snehavalli Thayar
Managalasasanam – Thiru Gana Sambandhar. Saint Arunagirinathar sung praising the
glories of Lord Subramanya in this temple.

The legend has that Varuni affronted Sage
Durvasa, who was meditating upon Lord on the river banks. It triggered anger in Sage and cursed Varuni
to turn out an atypical creature with the head of a goat and body of an
elephant. Varuni lamented at his fault
and begged for forgiveness. Sage Durvasa
instructed Varuni to worship Lord Shiva in Thiru Adanai (Thiruvadanai) the
place where Lord Surya sanctified a Linga and worshipped. Varani
arrived on this sacred temple worshipped Lord Shiva as instructed by Sage
Durvasa and got rid of the curse. Thus,
the deity has got the name ‘Thiru Adanainathar’.
Another legend has that Lord Brhma advised Lord
Surya to worship Lord Shiva in this sacred land. He arrived on this land and created a pond
called Surya Theertham. He sanctified a
Ratna Linga -Linga made of diamonds and performed sacred bath to Lord and
worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple. Thus, the deity has got the name
Adhiratheneswarar.
This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00PM
in the morning and 4.30PM to 8.30PM in the evenings.
