Thirupattur is one of the Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built during the 7th century famous for its craftsmanship.    Kings of Chola, Pandya and Chera has made abundance of contributions to this temple.




Presiding deity – Srithalinathar/Srithaleeswarar/Thiruthalinathar with his consort Goddess Sri Sivakami




Sthalavruksham – Sarakondrai




Theertham – Thiruthali Theertham, Sivagangai




Mangalasasanam – Thiru Gnana Sambandhar and Appar.  Saint Arunagirinathar sung praising the glories of Lord Subramanya in this temple.

Significance – Lord Shiva performed one of the marvelous cosmic dance forms known as ‘Gauri Thandavam’ on this sacred land.

The legend has that Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi desired to visualize one of the cosmic dance forms – Gauri Thandavam of Lord Shiva.  She underwent strict austerities praying to Lord.   The most pleased Lord performed his majestic Gauri Thandavam on this sacred land.




Sage Valmiki underwent severe penance on this sacred land for several years, it resulted him to turn out a mound.    Thus this holy land has got its name ‘Thiruputtur’.




This temple remains open from 6.30AM to 11.00PM in the morning and 4.30PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
