The legend has that a Brahmin Veda Sarma was
cursed by Sage Sakthi, son of Vashishta.
Due to the curse Veda Sarma turned into a demon and started harassing
Sages and people on Earth. In the
meantime, Lord Indra while having pastime with his consort found a striking
deer with its companion. He shot an
arrow on the deer and it died instantly.
Actually, the duos were Rishi and his Patni. Soon Indra was afflicted with the sin of
Brahmahathya. In order to get rid of the
curse, Lord Indra arrived on this sacred land and conducted a Yagna. While the Yagna was in progress, it was disrupted
by a demon who was none other than Veda Sarma cursed by Sage Sakthi. Lord Vishnu appeared on the Yagna fire and
killed the demon with his mace. Immediately Veda Sarma got rid of his curse
and regained his old form. Lord Vishnu
blessed Lord Indra and got rid of the sin Brahmahathya.
Another legend has that Udayavar Ramanujar
arrived on this sacred land while travelling to Thirukuruhoor to meet Nammalvar. On his way, he met a girl and enquired the
directions and distance of Thirukuruhoor.
In answer to his queries the girl beautifully recited the verses
composed by Nammalvar and guided him. Udayavar
overwhelmed with the devotion, he hysterically fell at the feet of the girl thinking
of Nammalvar.
