Thiru
Sirupuli Nayanar was born in a Brahmin family in a village Thiruvakkur, one of
the flourished lands of Chozha Kingdom. This is one of the most glorious villages
famous for the generosity and righteousness of its people. Thiru Gnana Sambandhar beautifully mentioned
in one of the compositions about the bounteousness of the people who were lived
in this sacred land.
Thiru
Siupuliyar was well versed with the Vedas and engaged good part of his life in
performing fire sacrifices for the welfare of the world. He was a zealous devotee of Lord Shiva and
worshipped Lord Thanthondri Nathar and his consort Goddess Ghatganetri in
Thirukkavur. He passionately receives
the devotees of Lord Shiva with utmost reverence to his home and provides them with
food and necessities. He treated the
devotee of Lord as Lord Shiva himself and spent blissful hours in the
association of them. He took his service
to Lord as a promise; he continued to feed as many devotees of Lord. At last, Lord himself appeared before Thiru Sirupuli
Nayanar as one of his guests. Thiru
Sirupuli Nayanar continued his self-less service to Lord and his devotees for
several years and attained the Abode of Lord Shiva in the Tamil month Karthikai
– Pooradam.
In the
Tamil month Karthikai – Pooradam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja Day in the
temples of Lord Shiva.
