Jai Sriman Narayana !!
Thiruppasoor/Tirupasur/Thirupachur is one of the 275 Thevara Shiva Sthalam known as Nadu Nadu Shiva Sthalam situated in Thiruvallur district. In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of self-manifested linga. Sri Sankara Bhagavad Padal visited this shrine and installed a Sri Chakra in the Ardha Mandapam. The daily offerings are made to Sri Chakra. In this temple Lord Vassesswarar has known ‘Perumal Vinai Theertha Eswaran’, giving dharshan to his devotees in ‘Thirumanakolam’ (wedding attire) with his consort Goddess Thankathalai Thayar. Vinayaka Mandapam consists of 11 Ganeshas and majestic rajagopuram are the major attractions of this temple.
Previously, the place where the temple stood was a woods land full of Bamboo Tree. Once, the cattle brought here to graze went on milking in a particular place slightly high from the ground in a raised platform. The cowherd was astounded to witness the miracle and informed the senior authorities. The King arrived here with his men and carried out the excavation process. While the process was at its peak there found blood gushing from this place. Later, the whole processes were put down for quite sometime. Afterwards the miracles happend in King’s life turned him to become an ardent devotee of Lord. Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and instructed the King to build a temple on that particular place of Bamboo forest. This is the place where Lord Vishnu prayed to Lord Shiva to remove the sins of killing the demons Madhu and Kaitaba.

There are many legends associated with this temple. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument about their supremacy. Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a huge Linga to resolve the issue between the two deities. Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and dived into sky and Lord Vishnu turned out a wild boar and plunged into the Earth with an intention to find the beginning and the end of huge Linga. Later, Lord Brahma returned with a wrong witness of Thazhampoo (Ketaki - screwpine) flower and Lord Vishnu came out with his sincere remarks. Lord Shiva cursed the Ketaki flower and lost its presence in all the rituals forever. Later, the most compassionate Lord blessed Ketaki flower that her presence would be permissible only on the day of Mahashivratri rituals. During the Mahashivratri Ketaki flower is used to worship the Linga of presiding deity Lord Vassesswarar in this temple.
Another legend has that Goddess Sati sacrificed her life in the the Yagna conducted by her father Daksha Prajapathi. After Satis ruin, she came down to earth and performed severe austerities to reunite with the Lord. Lord Shiva found Goddess Parvati in this place and the divine couple reunited once again. Therefore, Goddess came to known as ‘Thankathali’ in this temple.
