Our family consists of myself, my husband and my son along with my Mom decided to visit temples in Thiruverkkadu.  As usual our driver sab – a realiable and sincere person Mr. Babu (9840663328) arrived early in the morning to take us to our destinations.  We found early morning hours are pleasing time to visit temples because the time spend on the roads can be reduced and expect little crowd at the temples.

Thiruverkkadu Karumari Amman temple is located in the suburbs of Chennai.  This temple is situated near Thiruverkkadu Bus Stand which is 18 km away from Chennai city.  This temple is situated in the middle of hustle and bustle of the place called Thiruverkkadu, once this place was known for the abundance herbal plants.

Garudasevai for Lord Srinivasa Perumal on Vaikasi Visakham day, Kandha Shashti Vizha is celebrated in a grand manner and Thirukalyanam of Lord Muruga performed at the end of the Vizha.

This temple has many legends, once Goddess Karumari disguised herself in the form of a nomadic woman and approached Lord Surya as a fortune teller, but Lord Surya disgraced her. Goddess Karumari cursed Lord Surya, thus resulted in diminishing the brightness and glories of Lord Surya.  In order to get relieved from her curse Lord Surya worshipped Lord Karumari in this temple.

Lord Shiva with his consort Goddess Uma was ruling this place; all the deities approached them and described their pathetic state due to the harassment of the demons. Lord Shiva decided to reduce their grievance and entrusted Goddess Parvati with the sacred duties to protect the world in his absence.  Before leaving, Lord provided her with the holy ashes to perform the scared duties entrusted to her ingeniously. Goddess has chosen Thiruverkkadu as the place for Sage Agastiyar to carryout the work efficiently.  Goddess dwells in this place as ‘Saptha Matha’ with her seven divine forms.

There were two sisters named Sundari and Saradha in the world of snakes, though they were enthralling beauties they did not find right match for them several years.  Sage Narada instructed the snake sisters to worship Goddess Karumari at this temple and they sincerely followed the instruction of the Sage.  Finally, they found their right match with the blessings of Goddess Karumari.  Still, devotees believe that the Turmeric of Goddess Karumari’s has divine power to provide virtous offsprings for the childless couple and provide right match for the brides and bridegrooms.  The turmeric of Goddes Karumari is also capable to cure all the illness.
