Sage Sanathkumar explains to Maharishi Veda Vyasa, once Lord Vishnu disappeared from his Abode. Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma together went in search for Lord Vishnu and arrived at Kushasthali. Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva found the presence of Lord Vishnu in the magnificent place called Kushasthali. Further, the deities (Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva) requested Lord Vishnu to provide them a place to settle down in the beautiful city of Ujjain and revealed that they can not leave Lord Vishnu separately.
Skanda Puranam describes the city of Ujjain. In ancient times, Ujjain known by various names Avanti, Kushasthali, Kanjan Shringa and Padmavati.
After hearing the intention of the deities, Lord Vishnu requested Lord Brahma to settle down on the northen parts of the beautiful city of Ujjain, while Lord Shiva on the southern part of the Ujjain as His Abode. The deities referred the place Ujjain as city of golden mountins, that is how it has got the another name 'Kanjan Shringa'.
Lord Brahma started His duty of creation and requested Lord Vishnu to nurture it. Lord Vishnu asked for a pious place on the Earth where He could settle down and perform His duty. Lord Brahma picked up some Kusha (Dhrba) grass and thrown to a place, where Lord Vishnu settled on the Kusha Grass started to perform his responsibility as 'Preserver'. This is the very reason, Ujjain got another name 'Kushasthali'.
The deities were defeated by demons and went to hide in Meru Mountain. The deities sought the help of Lord Brahma who took them to Lord Vishnu. All the deities paid obeisance to Lord Vishnu and an invisible voice declared that there is a scarosanct place called Mahakal in the Kushathali. Lord Mahadeva dwells in this place. The unknown voice instructed the deities should undergo penance on this scaroscant place, which could bring back the Heavenly abode to them. The deities underwent severe penance in a place called Paishachamochan in Kushasthali. Finally, as prophezied the deities once again regained their heavenly abode. The term 'Avan' denote 'The Protector', once the deities choose this place to protect themselves from the demons. Later, this place came to know ' Avanti Puri'.
There was a demon called Tripurasura did an austere penance and Lord Brahma pleased at his austerity. Who got the boon - immortality from Lord Brahma. Immediately after receiving the boon with the immense power he started harrasing all the deities. The deities approached Lord Shiva and sought for help. Lord Shiva assured them that He would kill the Tripurasura and his days are counted. As predicted by Lord Shiva had a fierce battle with Tripurasura, in the battle field Lord Shiva killed the demon with His 'Pashupat Astra'. The place where the fierce battle took place between Lord Shiva and Tripurasura is known as 'Ujjain'.
While churning the Milky ocean for Ambrosia (The divine nectar) of Immortal, many precious things came out including the Halahala Poison. When the divine nectar came out, there was a huge quarrel and havoc between deities and demons claiming for the nectar. Sage Narada instructed Lord Vishnu to do something to bring peace within them. Lord Vishnu took a form of an beautiful lady (Mohini) and came out to serve the Ambrosia of immortality. The demons preferred the intoxicated drinks and infatuated at the beauty of the Mohini. Lord Vishnu served the deities with the Ambrosia of Immortality. Rahu presents himself diguised among the deities. When Lord Vishnu came to know about this, Lord Vishnu got hold of his throat hardly he could gulp down and severed his head. These incidents were taken place in the forest of Mahakal. The deities entitled to get equally all the precious things emerged out of the churning of Milky ocen. Goddess Lakshmi also got another name Padmavati. This is also one of the reason Ujjain has got the name 'Padmavati'.
