Skanda Puranam describes the glories of Somnath Linga, Lord Shiva narrates the splendor of Somnath Linga to Goddess Parvati. The Somnath linga existed from the time immemorial and it has profound association with the four Vedas – Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. This Linga reveals the sanctity of all the four Vedas as the manifestation of Rig Veda at the time of sunrise, Yajur Vedha at midday, Sama Vedha in the hours of daylight and Atharvana Veda in the sunset.
Lord Shiva narrates to Goddess Parvathi about the life span of the Linga as Lord Brahma has a life span of one Kalpa. After one Kalpa, Lord Brahma - The title moved to His Successor. Like ways, the Somnath Linga also undergoes the change of its name after every Kalpa. In this Kalpa, the Linga got its name 'Somnath'. The other significant names of the Lingas are Mrutyunjay, Kalagni Rudra, Amritesh, Annamay, Kiritivas and Bhairav Nath.
Lord Shiva describes the names of Lord Brahma as Shatanand in the present Kalpa. In previous Kalpas Lord Brahma was known as Virinchi, Padmabhu, Swayambhu, Parameshti, Surajyeshta and Hemagharba respectively.
In the Eighth Kalpa Lord Brahma will be known as Chathurmukh and the divine Linga will be known Pran Nath. Lord Shiva explains to Goddess Parvati about the accurate location of the Linga in Prabhasa Kshetram. This sacrosanct place is situated near the coastal area, between the plains of two rivers Vajrini and Nyankumati. Whoever visits this holy land despite of his hardships will attain the Abode of Lord Shiva. Whoever leaves their mortal body in this sacred land would attain Salvation. During the Kali era known for the destruction morality and honesty, only blessed souls could visit this holy Abode of Lord to curtail their miseries and attain Salvation. Lord Shiva revealed an eternal truth to Goddess Parvati that of all the Linga Kshetra the Somnath Linga is the highly cherished one by him.
