Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Varaha Puranam describes Sraddha Kalpa by Sage Markandeya to Sage Gurmukh.

The number of Brahmins invited for Sradhha Kalpa should be in  Odd numbers - like one, three, five.  While performing the Sradhha of Maternal Grand Father, it is compulsory  to perform Vaishyadeva Sradhha simultaneously .  While performing  Sradhha Kalpa related to the deities, the Brahmins should have their food facing East.   In case of Sradhha Kalpa related to the ancestors, the Brahmins should have their food facing North.

During the entire course of Sradhha rite, the Yagjyopaveetham should be worn in the opposite position.  The offerings of sesame seeds, water and Kusha grass (Dharba) are made for the sradhha rites of ancestors. The performer of Sradhha should be seated on the Kusha Grass.  It is customary to scatter the sesame seeds on the place where the Brahmins were fed.  It is believed that the food partake are for the ancesstors to satiate them.  Chanting of 'Rakshodhana Mantra' is also compulsory.

Offering of 'Pinda' with sesame seeds and water on the Kusha grass is one of the important parts of the ritual, placing them on South.  The Pinda is offered  in the name of the deceased and their ancestors.

Varaha Puranam - Salagrama Kshetra !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

In Varaha Puranam, Prithvi requests Lord Varaha to explain about the austere penance of Sage Shalankayan.

Sage Shalankayan underwent severe penance under a Sala Vruksha praying to Lord Vishnu.  The Sage was unaware of the fact that Lord Vishnu dwells in the SalaVruksha.  When Lord Vishnu appeared in front him, he requested for a boon to have a child having all the qualities of Lord Shiva.  Lord Vishnu explained to Sage Shalankayan that an immortal son  - Nandikeshwara was already born and presently in Vraja (Mathura).   Lord Vishnu reiterated that the Sage was ignorant to know the fact that Sala Vrukha was dear to Lord Vishnu.  The place had become ' Sala Grama Theertham ' the devotees who visit this holy land will be liberated from all the worldly bondages.

Kadhri Sri Manjunathar Temple !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara !!

Sri Manjunathar Temple in South India is one of the famous temples  of Lord Shiva. This temple is found in Mangalore.   The beautiful architectural work begins from the entrance  to the sanctum sancntorum of the temple and is an attractive and eye captivating sight.   It is also one of the contributions of the King of Vijayanagara Kingdom.  The the deities are : Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga Parameshwari, Lord Machendranath, Lord Gorakanath, Lord Shringinath, Lord Buddha and  Lord Trilokeswara (made of Panchaloha).  The Moolavar – Presiding deity is Lord Manjunathar.    The temple pond and the well are the most interesting sights in this temple.  The well water inside this temple is used for the Abishekam of Lord Shiva.  The water in this well remains the same in all seasons.  The  water level never changes whatsoever the climate.  The water in the well remains cold no matter what the climate would be.  The Lingam worshipped in this temple originated by itself  -Swayambu Linga.  Another speciality of this temple is that even the public can perform Abishekam to  Lord Shiva.    The water flowing from the mouth of the lion never stops and no one knows the origin of the same.  During Makara sangrathi day,  the water flows out with Thulsi and it is an amazing sight.   The water flowing here is known as  Pillayar theertham – Kasi Bhagirathi Theertham  specially for the Abishekam of Lord Shiva.  The Prasadams received from this temple are betel leaves, nuts, coconut and Banana.  It is believed that the sacred Prasadam of Lord Shiva (Betel leaves) are capable to bring all the good luck.   It is one of the most auspicious signs to keep the betel leaf at home and it brings good fortune.

The Ponds are the marvelous sites in this temple.   Usually in most of the temples, the temple ponds are situated either in the front of the temple or behind the temple .   In this temple of Lord Manjunathar,  it is situated above from the ground level of the temple.    It is believed that nine sages underwent severe penance here and therebynoriginated the nine  ponds  .  The water in the ponds never dries. The water level remains the same all throughout the  years.  A holy dip in this pond is equal to the dip in the holy river Ganges.  The devotees have had a lot of admiring and fascinating experiences by visiting this temple.

The Kadhri  Mountain which is 500 ft height from the ground level is full of marvelous sites and it is believed that there  were many sages and rishis who underwent penance.    Till the 10th century, Buddha  worship was in peak.  Later it was turned into a temple of Lord Shiva.   Jogis are the natives  of this place who created the Jogi Mutt.   One of the famous festivals of the temple is ‘Ratha Yathra’ (Car Festival).  The senior pontiff from the Jogi Mutt initiates this festival.  Without  his initiation the Ratha will not take its divine pradhakshina of Lord Manjunathar.     The silver Chariot of  350 kgms. goes around the temple three times during the festival period .   The Senior Pontiff of the Jogi mutt  is received with great honour and respect to this temple for the initiation of this festival.     In  Jogi Mutt an amazing sight for the devotees is  ‘Sacrificial Fire’ ( Agni ) .   It is believed that the fire is  10,000 years  old.    Lord Parasurama (6th incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu) and the Pancha Pandavas created the agni in Jogi Mutt.    The difficult path through the mountain of Kadhri leads to many surprises.  ‘Seetha Kulam’  (Well created by Sita Devi).   While Ravana – Demon King abducted  Sita Devi  to Lanka, Her tears fell down and became  a well.   The way to Kadhri mountains is always  very silent.   The places surrounding  Jogi Mutt are  the caves  of  Pancha Pandavas who underwent severe penance.  It is believed that the pathways of this dark hollow leads to Varanasi.  The Pancha Pandavas lived  for many years in the caves of the Kadri mountain.   It is believed that many Sidhars and Sanyasins lives here.

Srimad Bagavatham - Time of Sunset - Sandhya !! Final Part !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Sage Kashyapa and his wife Dithi  had no offsprings for a long time and they were longing for a child. Sage  Kashyapa’s  second wife Adithi,  had children .  The Sage was on Tapasya for many days.   One day, during the time of Sunset, Sage Kashyapa  opened his eyes.    Dithi approached Kashyapa and pleaded him with her desire for a child.    Sage Kashyapa  replied that it was the responsibility of the wife to have a child, her desire for a child was justifiable.  But   during sunset it was not advisable to be engaged in such things.  He explained to her that the child born would be a Demon.  The Sage persuaded her to find a good time to have a child.    Dithi was not in a position to understand  the Sage's advices.  She persisted with her wish to Sage Kashyapa and fulfilled her desires.

After her desires fulfilled,  she fell on the feet of Sage Kashyapa and cried for forgiveness of her mistake.   The Sage explained to her that, it was not possible to change the fate.  She would have two children with all the natures of a Demon.  They wodul be cursed by everyone asking,  ‘Who is the sinner who gave birth to these demons? ’.  She felt guilty of her sin and enquired consensus of the sin  she had committed during the time of Sunset. The Sage revealed the truth that it was not a curse but the truth.  The two sons will be known as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu  (Dwarapalakas of Lord Vishnu in their previous birth).  The Elder son Hiranyakashipu will have four children and one amongst them will be Prahlada - An ardent devotee of Lord Hari.  The whole world shall praise  the glory of him and he will be remembered for his firm devotion to Lord Hari .   It  will be capable to take seven ancestors and descendents to  heaven.

It is the curse of Lord that Hiryankshan and Hiranyakashipu were brought as evil demons.  God is the Cause and the Effect.   The fate  made Dithi to compel Sage Kashyapa to have a child during the hours of sunset.  Lord Brahma created Ithihasam and Puranas from one mouth, Vedham from another and Astrology and Medicine from the third one. It is all provided by Lord Hari Himself  and it should be followed strictly.

Sat-tila Ekadashi !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Bavishyothara Puranam describes the glory of Sat-tila Ekadashi which falls on the waning period of the moon.  The most anguish Sage Dalbhya enquired Sage Pulastya about the fate of the people who were engaged in the sinful activities of Brahmahathya and people who have no control over their senses.  In order to save the sinners from the hellish torture Sage Pulastya advises there is only one way to get relieved from the sinful deeds and their punishments that is by worship of Lord Hari with pure mind and heart during the day of Ekadashi.

Sage Pulastya explains to Sage Dalbhya about the method of worships Lord Hari on the day of Sat-tila Eakadashi.  Worshipof Lord Hari on this auspicious day with his consort Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, giving alms to Brahmins who are invited, donating cloths, Sandals, Umbrella, a steel pitcher of water, giving away cows and sesame seeds also brings abundance of merits.

The very name 'Sat – Tila Ekadashi ' was derived from the usage of Til - for bathing, smearing paste, offering Til in the sacrificial fire, donating the same, offering  til to forefathers and consumption of the same on this day of Ekadashi  is capable to destroy all the sins.

There was a   Brahmin woman lived a life abstaining from all the pleasures.  She was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu.  Living a life of severe chastity made her weak.  Though she was engaged in all charity works, she forgot to provide any food grains to the demigods and Sanyasins.  She was engaged in all the good deeds other than serving food to the hungry.    One day Lord Vishnu took the form of a mendicant and appeared before her asking for alms in order to test her devotion.    When the Brahmin woman asked for the identity of mendicant, he just ignored to answer her.  It made the Brahmin woman angry and irritated, so she put a handful of clay as alms.   The mendicant left the spot immediately. When she returned home, she was panic struck to find that all her wealth had disappeared.   She prayed to Lord Vishnu, ' I have lived a life of utmost chastity and devotion, Lord why did you put me in this misery?'.   Instantly, she could hear a divine voice ' The wives of the demigods will visit your place and explain the glory of Sat- Tila Ekadashi'.  As per the instructions of the wives of demigods, the Brahmin woman observed Sat-tila Ekadashi and once again she regained all her wealth and beauty.

Lord Krishna narrated the significance of Sat-tila Ekadashi and rules and regulations for the observance to Maharishi Narada about the glories and the merits of fasting on this Ekadashi.   Whoever fast and worships Lord Vishnu with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi on this day attains  Prosperity and  one who donates Til (Sesame seeds) on this day of Ekadashi would removes all the sins committed.

Srimad Bagavatham - The Time of Sunset - Sandhya !! Part II

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Sage Kashyapa explains to his wife Dithi that during evening one should pray to Lord, Nama sankeerthanam  and lighten the Lamp after abulations.  The lightening of Lamp helps to  remove all the darkness in the house.   Lord Rudra looks for the people who does not follow these kind of auspicious activities and punishes them. Lord Rudra has no one as enemy and no one close, all are equal to Him.  Lord Shiva won over  Maya – Illusions and we are the ones falling to Maya,  longing for all material and immaterial things without knowing the Truth that everything is perishable.  Nothing in this Universe is Permanent .   Even Ravana did severe penance and asked Lord Shiva for Fame.  Lord Rudra  never does any partiality to sinners, He performs his Duty as the Destroyer.  He wants  every soul  to attain salvation and  gives dharshan during the time of Pradosham without any jewels or elegant ornaments.  He gives us the Dharshan as Digambareshwar with  serpents on his body, tiger skin  around His waist and smeared  ashes all over his body.  To remind us the eternal Truth – Everything is going to be ashes and nothing is going to remain.

Lord Rudra wants  to save  us from ignorance and make us aware of  the Truth with the smear of ashes on His body.  Lord Shiva gives dharshan to us in this form to hate the materialistic thinking and way of life. During sunset, one should  worship  Lord Surya Narayana.  During this time  of Sandhya, one should not sleep or spend time on bed.  This is the time to worship Lord and chant Adithya Hrudayam.  During  the time of Sunset, one should avoid unwanted speeches as the urge to do  good things will be lesser than that of evil.  The  Kaliyuga has all the evil forces because of the ignorance of finding a right time to have an offspring.   This is also one of the reasons which adds misery to human life.  Lord Brahma, all the deities and Maya  worship Lord Rudra during the time of Pradosham.

At the time of Sunset, all the living beings undergo  chemical changes  in their body organs like  digestive system, uterus, blood vessels etc.  This is what happens  during the times of  eclipse too.  The tendency to do evil things and evil characters dominate in these hours.  It brings out Tamassik  and Rajassik  nature of all the living beings.   This is one of the reasons   Sage Kashyapa insists to spend these hours in worshipping Lord.   The Brahma Muhurtham provides intelligence and all the Satwik qualities while the time of Sunset brings all the Rajassik and Tamassik qualities.

Srimad Bagavatham - Time of Sunset - Sandhya !!Part I

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

In  Srimad Bagavatham  - Pradhama Skandam -  (1 – 3 – 14 ) Shuka Brahamam explains  to King  Parikshit about the Time of Sunset – Sandhya - as  Demonic Time.

Sunset  is  the end of the day and the beginning of the night.   During sunset, one should not do the things  which are forbidden.   Sage Kashyapa explains to his wife Dithi about ‘Sandhya Kal’.

Sage Kashyapa addressing his wife as Fearful nature  of woman, it is the responsibility of a husband to  fulfill  all  her desires as a husband.   Hinduism  has given so much of respect to women.  During the time of Yaga , Yagnam  and Dhanam, a man cannot perform any auspicious rituals without a woman.  She carries so much importance to perform any kind of sacrifices and rituals.  When Lord Rama decided to perform Ashwamedha yagam, the Yagam took place only after keeping an idol of Sita next to Him.  Veda declares women are  half of men.  That is why she is known as  'Grahalakshmi'.   The families where  women are  respected and honored is where all the deities live.  It is believed that in houses where the cruelty and injustice to woman takes place, all the deities refuse to step.

A Woman makes her husband  capable to face any kind 0f struggle in  his life .  The rest of the three Ashramas depend on Gruhastha.  Any kind of difficulty or grief  in the  ocean of human life,   husband  faces  everything courageously  with the help of a woman.  Gurukulashram, Grahastha, Vanaprastha , Sanyasam  are the four Ashrama Dharmas .  The sanyasin asks for food and  Donations to Grahasthas only.  During Unchavruthi, women provide grains to the Sanyasins.  During Vanaparastha, the couple come to have food from  Gruhasthas.  Ashramadharma is  just a transition of the journey in one’s life.  It is the duty of the wife to receive the guests, cook for them and serve them.  It is the right of a woman to honor the guest.  Even if the King receives sanyasins in his Palace,  the Queen is the one who serves food for the Sanyasins.

The responsibility of home is taken care by them.  The daily routine,  even the simplest things in the home is taken care by them. Women are the ones who have the right to lighten the lamp at home.  Control over the five senses   is possible only with the help of  a wife.  Who are righteous would not do anything against his wife.  When any argument arises, it is the responsibility of the husband to handle it properly. Everyone desires to have virtuous children  in their  life, capable to  follow  all the righteousness and  it is possible only through  the togetherness of husband and wife during the times ( Muhurthams - auspicious times ) which were followed by our ancestors .  The  time of Sunset is forbidden to do such things.

The time of sunset is known as  evil time -  Pradosha.  This is the time for the spirits and Ghosts to wander along with Lord Shiva to punish whoever commit sins.  The time of sunset is the morning for the spirits and ghosts.  Just like human beings have sunrise as beginning of  their day the spirits and ghosts are Ganas of  Lord Shiva –  Who is the destroyer of sins.    These spirits and Ghosts follow Lord Shiva wherever He goes.   During the time of Sunset , Lord Rudra travels on His bull with His ganas in search of  sinners. His hairlocks are covered  with ashes and his body is smeared with ashes.  His Three eyes represent Lord  Surya,  Moon and Agni .  He measures the entire Universe with His three eyes which are capable to bring down the sinners into ashes, thereby  taking care of the entire Universe.  He is  more active during the  time of Sunset - Sandhya.  His duty is destroy and support things which are able to destroy them  in future.  Sage Kashyapa explains to Dithi (one of the daughters of Dakshaprajapathi – Sister of Sati) that Lord Rudra thus protects the Universe.

There were thousands of compositions flurried out from Thyagaraja praising the glory of Lord Rama.  It is believed that Lord Rama himself desired to listen to those compositions from Thyagaraja.  One day, Lord Rama appeared in his dream and declared that the idol of Lord used to worship was concealed by his elder brother Japyesha on the banks of river Cauvery.   At the divine instruction  Thyagaraja arrived on the river bank of Cauvery and started  to hollow out the sand, at last he founded the idol  buried.  The exceptional sight of the idol brought an immense joy in him.  He passionately sang

 Kanukondini ..... Sri Rama

Thyagaraja was married to Parvathi at the age of eighteen in the year 1784.   Unfortunately, his marriage to Parvathi was short lived for five years, when Tyagaraja was twenty three years old his wife Parvathi attained the lotus feet of Lord.   He was compelled to remarry Kamala, sister of Parvathi.  This couple had a daughter Seethalakshmi.  Thyagaraja   continued serving the Lord for several years at his heart’s content.  Later, he accepted Sanyasrama.

At the age of 79/80 Thyagaraja attained salvation at the feet of Lord while he was in Thiruvaiyar, before ten days of his journey from this world; he conveyed the message to his disciples that he had a dream in that Lord Rama informed him that he would attain Moksha after ten days.  Thyagaraja had completed ninety six crores of chanting the holy names of Lord Rama and visualized Lord before him.   On 6th January, 1847 on the day of Pushya Bahula Panchami   Saint Thyagaraja attained the lotus feet of Lord Rama.

A magnificent temple was constructed in memorial of Saint Tyagaraja on the banks of river Cauvery.  Every year the legends of Carnatic Music pay homage to the Saint Tygaraja in Thiruvaiyar  as a tribute to the great Saint for his mission of spreading Rama Bakthi through Nadha Upasana and Nama Upasana.   As a part of musical homage, they sing the Pancharathna Krithis (The five Gems of Tyagaraja):

 Sadhinchaney – Ragam  - Aarabhi

Tyagaraja passionately continued the worship of Lord Rama with his music in the form of Namopasana along with Nadhopasana, Lord was pleased at the devotion of Tyagaraja and appeared before him.  A brilliant blue light pierced his eyes and there he envisioned Lord Rama along with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman.    Tyagaraja was in ecstasy sung the glorious verses praising Lord Sri Rama.

Balakanakamaya Chela Sujana Paripala Sri Rama lola…

He continued singing and dancing praising the grandeur of Lord, seeing the madness of his brother  Japeysha got irritated and screamed at his brother’s foolish act of singing and dancing praising the glories of Lord, instead he urged him to sing before the  King who could provide enough wealth for the family.

Once, Sonti Venkataramaiyya sang a beautiful composition of  Thygaraja before  the King who was ruled that city.

Samaja Vaaragamana….

The King was mesmerized to listen to this marvellous composition and enquired about the origin of the same.   Sonti venkataramaiyya reverentially mentioned the name of Thyagaraja the ardent devotee of Lord Rama to the King.  The King decided to bring him to the Palace to appoint him as his royal musician.  Immediately, a ceremonial carriage was sent to bring Tyagaraja to Thrivaiyar.  The Chariot arrived at  Thirumanjana Veedhi in Thiruvaiyar.   Japyesha who was sitting in the stairs of his home witnessed the amazing chariot and became curious to know for whom the Chariot had been arrived.   His curious mind started wandering to find out the same.  He started running behind people of the village to find the news.  Finally, the chariot paused in front of Thyagaraja's house.  Japyesha’s happiness knew no bounds.   Thyagaraja was immersed in praising the glories of Lord Rama and the worship of Lord.  Thyagaraja came to know about the news and was in dilemma.  The King wanted to receive Thyagaraja and sing for him.  On the other hand, Lord Rama wanted Thyagaraja to be with him and praise the glory of Him.  Tyagaraja listened to his heart saying,”Nothing is superior to Lord Rama".  He preferred to be with Lord Rama.  If in case he chooses to visit the King, he may instruct to sing his glory and it will become a permanent practice which Thyagaraja could not even think about.  Thyagaraja decided to send back the Chariot.  Japyesha became wild at the foolishness of his brother and started abusing him.  He reminded Thyagaraja about his poverty. Tyagaraja remained in a very composed state.  Ultimately, Japyesha knew that his brother was not going to change a bit.  He angrily looked at the Idol of Lord Rama and left the place.   On the same night, Tygaraja finished his prayers all day long singing keerthanas and sending Lord Rama to sleep.

Melukovayya….Rama…

As usual the next day early morning he was enthusiastically present before his Lord to wake Him
“Kousalya Supraja Rama Poorva Sandhya Pravarthathey |
Uthishta Narashardhoolam Karthavyam Dhaiva Manviham ||”

When Tyagaraja opened the door  Alas ! He was shocked at the absence of Lord Rama's idol.  The panic struck Tyagaraja called his wife Kamalambal and asked her for the Idol Lord Rama.  He wept bitterly and ran madly on the street asking everyone whether anyone had seen the Idol of Lord Rama.    He begged his brother Japyesh to give   back the idol of Lord Rama.   There was no daily ritual, there was no lesson to his disciple and it continued for several days.   Thyagaraja discarded food and sleep with tears overflowing sincerely prayed to Lord, eventually his life turned out utter gloomy from the separation of Lord Rama.

A Tribute to Saint Tyagaraja !! Part III

As the years passed by,  Tyagaraja had grown up into an young adult.  One day, Tyagaraja followed his father Rama Brahmam for  Unjavruthi  ( receiving alms)  and singing Bajans of Lord Rama.  His father felt unwell and informed his son that the time has arrived to leave this world and go to Lord Rama's Lotus feet.   His father handed Rosary beads to his son seeing Thyagaraja’s deep devotion towards Lord and instructed him to chant the holy names of Lord Rama.   Rama Brahmam could visualize Lord Rama before him at the time of death.  Tyagaraja followed his father in chanting ‘Rama Nama’.  His father advised Tyagaraja that Lord Rama would provide dharshan to him when he finishes the 100 crores of chanting Rama Nama, Tharaka Mantra.  Shortly, his father passed away when Thyagaraja was at the age of twenty one.   Tyagaraja started composing thousands and thousands of compositions of Lord Rama.   At the age of thirty seven, his mother also passed away.

Immediately after the sad demise of his father, Tyagaraja took in charge of the worship of Lord Rama.  Tyagaraja did not stop daily rituals to Lord, which was meticulously carried out by his father when he was alive.  He engaged in the worship of Lord with his Nadha Upasana, thousands and thousands of compositions and phrases flew out of his mind praising the glories of Lord Rama.  He continued to do the same from the dawn to dusk.  In the night, he mellifluously sang ‘Lali’/lullaby to his Lord.  Every moment in his life has passed with the remembrance of Lord Rama.  The Rama Nama and the compositions praising the Lord formed a staunch devotion in him.

 Ksheera Sagara Sayana………….

He constructed every word and phrase with utmost devotion and dedication to Lord.  He had lots of disciples to learn under him, his devotion to Lord grew day by day.    His brother Japyeshan, who was in charge of taking care of the family, was irritated at his brother's irrational behavior and devotion to Lord.  He compelled Tyagaraja to sing before the Kings and rich people instead of singing in front of the lifeless idol of Lord Rama.  He urged Thyagaraja to sing before the rich thereby he could acquire wealth for the family.   Thyagaraja was well aware of the eternal truth that, The Supreme Lord is the provider of the wealth and the origin of the wealth; he flatly refused to follow Japyesha.

Japyeshan blamed Thyagaraja that he had been providing nothing to the family so long, he has to earn some money otherwise he will be separated from the family.   Finally, the greedy Japyesha divided the wealth of the family and looted them.   Tyagaraja opted for the idol of Rama which was previously worshipped by his father and gracefully left all the wealth to his brother.  After this heartbreaking incident, Thyagaraja confronted with an Astrologer, who started blabbering seeing pitiful state of Thyagaraja and it was annoying.  Thyagaraja answered him back that the heart where Lord Rama resides the planets could do nothing.
